More about Nuremberg

Nuremberg may be second to Munich in its region, but this city is a gushing example of all that's right about Bavaria. In the 20th century, it was derailed by the Nazi agenda, but this city paid for its crimes at the receiving end of one of the most devastating bombing campaigns of WWII and again through the Nuremberg trials. Today, after decades of meticulous reconstruction, Nuremberg inspires visitors with beer gardens, its medieval castle, and grand historic churches.

Centuries ago, Nuremberg was the unofficial seat of the Holy Roman Empire. It amassed extensive wealth in those days, leading to the construction of the castle in the northwest corner of the historic quarter. A spread of merchant houses and a few surviving kilometers of the old wall are original.

Hotels in Nuremberg include charming inns housed in restored or rebuilt mansions as well as more affordable options to the southwest. Even these are in walking distance of sites and restaurants. Hundreds of breweries are still in operation around Nuremberg, and tourists instinctively flock to the city's restaurants, bars and beer halls for a taste.

Shoppers enjoy a mix of modern department stores, rustic antique shops and plenty in between. Nuremberg hosts the premier Christmas Market in Germany, which is as much about shopping as celebrating Bavarian history and culture. Travelers can enjoy some of the country's best handmade ornaments, gingerbread houses, roast sausage and mulled wine.

Nuremberg Airport is less than ten kilometers north of the city center. A selection of airport hotel rooms caters mainly to business travelers, with most tourists heading for the hotels in Nuremberg city center.
