Find Hotels in Pakbeng, Laos

We had booked for one night - and as soon as we arrived and sat on the terrace watching the dramatic sky prepare for sunset over the stunning views of the hills and river, we immediately decided to stay an extra night. That was such a great idea as the Sanctuary Pakbeng Lodge is such a comfortable and relaxing and well run hotel in a remarkable setting. A tip to travellers: Book your journey by slow boat in two parts, so you can stay a few days at the Sanctuary. Another highlight: You MUST visit the Sanctuary-run Mekong Elephant Park - on the opposite bank of the river. Here we walked with 3 gentle elephants and their mahouts & the wonderful park manager, Wendy, slowly through the forrest whilst they munched bamboo and we learnt interesting facts and stories about Lao elephants. This was a highlight of our trip in Laos as one of the few places in the world where one can see that the elephants are so well looked after and cared for and walk with the elephants untethered. We loved our stay in Pakbeng, even though we just stopped one night with the slow boat trip to Luang Prabang. The room was clean and the bed very comfortable. The owners were very nice and picked us up (for free) at the pier when we arrived with the slow boat. They offered us welcome drinks and prepared us sandwiches for the next day. The breakfast was delicious, we had the best mango of our lives!

Traveling with family in Oudomxay province, we chose this hotel for our 4-night stay in Pakbeng, so we could relax and enjoy quiet time altogether. The location is amazing, benefiting from an exceptional viewpoint. The pool is a delight, the room is great (missing some seating furniture inside or on balcony) and the staffs are wonderful (smiling, caring). However, standards are not meeting expectations for this price range... Gym, sauna and spa are advertised on Agoda page, but there was nothing there!! We paid $15/pax for breakfast, which is completely overpriced considering the food offered: egg/bacon, croissant/bread, coffee/tea.. and that is pretty much it. We had many more varieties for cheaper in other hotels in Laos. Without mentioning $4 for a tiny glass of orange juice from a bottle that cost $2... Unfortunately, it feels like management is absent or overwhelmed. Overall, disappointed but thankful to the staffs who really did their best and made this stay remain a good one.

The hotel was very good and comes with mosquito nets which was excellent. The only downside is the lack of security. The Windows are just shutters with no glass and the locks on these shutters are just a small bolt type lock (similarly to a small toilet door lock) but I just didn't like leaving my stuff in there. I'm not sure if this was because we were paranoid as it seemed like local children we're stealing stuff off the boat whilst it was unloaded in Pakbeng. On the upside, there is a nice Indian right near to the hotel which means you can stay close by and not stay away from the room long!

I was really not looking forward to this stopover having read numerous bad review of Pakbeng and the accommodations. We booked in advance despite people advising to get cheaper accommodation on arrival. We paid £20 for 1 night, yes it was over priced but we wanted a definite place to stay on arrival. However, there did appear to be loads of places offering beds for the night. We had read that the guesthouse was within walking distance so we got of the boat with our massive backpacks and started to walk not knowing where it would be. Within not even five minutes we reached the guest house on the left hand side. The double room with private bathroom was small but cosy and very clean. There were no cons in my eyes but to be fair I was not expecting great things so was very happy with what we got! Would definitely recommend here for the stop over and also Hasans Indian across the street. We spoke to others who didn't book in advance and they didn't have as pleasant a stay as we did.

We organised the slow boat trip from Chiang Mai but needed to organise accomodation ourselves for the stopover in Pakbeng. As we were travelling with kids I decided to do this in advance. However, it was unecessary to do so as there is plenty of accomodation at Pakbeng for a much cheaper rate and generally the stay in Pakbeng is only overnight, and so other options are more than adequate and much better value. However, the hotel was a nice bit of comfort in the middle of the slow boat trip - just a pity the breakfast was not so great.

Pak Beng is a one night stop over for those on the slow boat. The town caters accordingly. It’s a neat little place, better than Huay Xai if that was your starting point. The hotel was a bit overpriced for what it was ,but I presume they all are. We were picked up at the pier to our surprise (on the back of a truck) which was a nice touch. It,s a short walk down the hill in the morning, passing several places that will make you breakfast & sandwiches with speed,ready for the last leg of the trip. Would I stay there again or recommend it to a friend ,ye sure.

Not much choice in Pakbeng where all slow-boat rides stay overnight. The room was OK for one night but, as the whole building itself, it was in rather poor condition and badly needed some renovation. And I didn't appreciate the dirty tabče-clothes in the restaurant, although the food was Ok and they also affered take-away food for the second day on the boat. No fre bottled water and the one I paid for wasn't even cold. All in all, OK but auzite overproced for waht it is; I had many much better hotels in Laos for nearly half that price!

Yes we pre-booked, yes we took the Slow Boat, and no we couldn't have been happier. We were met at the boat landing (last boat of the day) and given a ride to Phonemany, which is a walk uphill. Nice people, no hassle, and lovely room. We were in a private room, over the restaurant/bar, off the second floor balcony overlooking the Main Street in Pakbeng. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? Instead, it was one of the more decent night's sleep we've had in all of SE Asia. It was quiet, the bathroom functional with hot water shower, and nice sheets and towels. The restaurant was handy and made delicious reasonably priced food for dinner, breakfast, and some to take on the boat too! They gave us a tuktuk ride back to the boat in the morning, and made sure we got there in time to select a good seat. Nice people, friendly and helpful. A delightful surprise after reading the other reviews.
