Traveler impressions of Pangkor

More about Pangkor

The small tropical island of Pangkor has come a long way from being inhabited by only fishermen and pirates. This now well-developed beach destination offers low-key holidays and beautiful scenery. Other beach resorts in Malaysia tend to attract more tourists, but that leaves Pangkor less hectic and easier to enjoy. The local airport accepts flights from Kuala Lumpur, and a ferry from the nearby coastal town of Lumut access Pangkor Laut Island.

Beaches are a natural draw to the island, with swimming and basking popular leisure on the beaches of Coral Bay, Teluk Belanga, and Pasir Bogak. The island also has a colonial heritage. The remains of a 17th century Dutch Fort makes for an interesting attraction, and plenty of historical information is provided at the site. A massive granite tablet called Batu Bersurat details the history and local myth.

Fresh seafood as well as Chinese and Malay dishes are the dining opportunities most enjoyed on the island. The area of Pasir Bogak is said to be the greatest area to enjoy the local food as well as watching local fishermen ply their trade.

Be sure to check out the interactive map of Pangkor for information on hotel locations, attractions, and must-see destinations.
