Located on the banks of the Yom River in the northern river valleys of Thailand, Phrae is an old and historic town with one of the largest collection of collection of Teak houses and a teak forests in the country.

There are regularly scheduled flights from Bangkok’s regional airport, arriving at Phrae Airport which is then accessible by local transportation. From cities in the north, like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the easiest way to reach Phrae would be by local bus or rental car, although taking the trail affords the opportunity to see the stunning country sides of northern Thailand while traveling.

Once in Phrae, exploring by foot or the local transportation of motorcycle taxis of city bus is the easiest way to see some of the oldest Teak houses in the country, including Khum Chao Luang, the house where the King and Queen once stayed. There are an impressive number of historic buildings and places in Phrae, so ask the local staff for access to a map of all the historic buildings, and get to exploring. It’s a great way to spend at least one day in this town.

While exploring around Phrae, get some natural scenery at Phae Muang Phee Royal Park and then stop by the local temple Wat Prathat Cho Hae and observe how the temples in these small towns are often the center of the community. While in the neighborhood, explore the local market and pick up some souvenirs as reminders of this town that seems to almost be stuck in time.
