More about Rockhampton

Rockhampton is one of Australia’s oldest cities and is also the Beef Capital of Australia. The city sits on the Tropic of Capricorn and is the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef. For easy arrival, Rockhampton Airport is to the west with access to the Bruce Highway. Within the city, driving can be an enjoyable experience, but the flat topography and compact size makes a strolling tour possible around the city center.

Founded in the mid-1800s, there are several pieces of history that can be explored here. The Rockhampton Heritage Building and the Customs House both serve as excellent stops for a glimpse into the city’s past, and the Dreamtime Cultural Center explores the aboriginal culture, heritage, and artwork. More than a century old, the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens offer a beautiful natural respite, and tucked inside it is the Rockhampton Zoo. More nature can be found within Mt. Archer National Park, and so too can magnificent views of the city from Frazer Park. For those who really want to get into Rockhampton, there is the Mount Etna Caves National Park and the nearby Capricorn Caves. Another site that might be worth a quick stop would be the Capricorn Spire which serves as an approximate marker for the line of latitude when the sun is directly overhead.
