Traveler impressions of Rottnest Island

More about Rottnest Island

Known as Rotto to the locals, Rottnest Island is a far more relaxed island destination than it used to be. The island was an internment camp during World War I, and the tallest hill hosts artillery guns from World War II. The military use of the island has since passed, and travelers now come here for the beaches and bays. Ferries to Rottnest Island depart from both Perth and Fremantle, and flights are serviced at Rottnest Island Airport.

Once arriving at this destination 20km off the coast of Perth, grab a bicycle. Cars are not permitted on the island, and a shuttle service is available to get around, but a full loop around the island is only 25km. So having a bike will make for a healthier and potentially more rewarding experience. Catch incredible coastal views along beaches and bays such as Geordie Bay, Fays Bay, and The Basin. At night, keep an eye out for the creature that was mistaken by early settlers for a rat. The island was eventually called Rat’s Nest due to this mistaken identity, but these adorable creatures are actually called quokkas and can be seen in large numbers. Rottnest Island Museum makes for a great stop to catch up on the history and ecology of the land, and an amazing landscape that includes pink salt lakes await your exploration.
