Known as the Capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose is one of the nicest cities in California. The clean and well-maintained city may not be the cheapest destination, but there are plenty of outdoor and public activities to make it worth visiting even if on a budget. The city is served by San Jose International Airport
, which is located just a couple of miles outside of the city center, and surrounded by several hotels.
Most of the exclusive hotels, restaurants, and shops can be found within the charming European-style village of Santana Row
. This is also where visitors and locals go to find great nightlife and entertainment options, as well as daytime activities such as a year-long weekend farmers market, and the central garden of the area often attracts most of the city’s residents. Winchester Mystery House
is perhaps San Jose’s most unique attraction. The house, once the residence of an heiress, has many architectural oddities that have earned it a place on the California Historic Buildings list. Legend has it that the former owner decided to build this house and keep it in a perpetual state of construction in an effort to ward off ghosts and evil spirits. The ongoing construction on the house is responsible for the stairs that lead nowhere, endless mazes, and many other curiosities that have made it a major tourist destination. What resulted is a massive house with many additions, most of which make no sense but have added to the grandeur of the house. Today, it is an extremely popular tourist destination.
