"I stayed at Saylomyen Guesthouse with my mother the night before going to the Elephant Conservation Centre. We were both very tired after our bumpy 7 hour ride up from Vientiane... What a pleasant surprise! I'd chosen the guesthouse because the sheets looked very clean on the online photos - and they were just as clean in real life. The mattresses were thick and comfortable, not too soft, not too hard, and gave us a very good night's sleep. The bathroom was very clean. The air-con was new, worked well and was silent. There was a big rack to hang clothes and/or washing. There was a nice flat TV with a satellite box, though we were too tired to watch it. The staff was helpful and even though there isn't a proper restaurant of cafe to speak of, they do sell cold drinks and snacks at the reception desk - including pot-noodles which you can get hot water for. Near the reception desk was also a shelf with cups and glasses and one can help oneself free cold water, as well as free tea and instant coffee. The architecture is quite new and lacks in character a bit, but the courtyard is clean, and they made it look as pretty as possible with trees and potted plants. There is also a few parking spaces in the shade. I'm not sure about what else is around, but just across the road is a small minimart selling essentials and a wider range of snacks. Overall it's one of the best guesthouses I've stayed at in Laos - and I've lived here for 6 years. At just 18USD for a twin room, it’s also good value for money (accommodation tends to be more expensive in Laos than in neighboring countries). The only downside was maybe that the address was not explained clearly and the telephone number was wrong on the booking confirmation, but asking around the minivan driver found it rather quickly. The information you need to know is that it's in "Simuang Village". Pronounced "see-moo-ang". "
