Discover the neighborhoods of Toyako

Toyako is a small town located on the southern end of Hokkaido. Setin the Abuta District, the town was formed from the 2006 merger of Abuta and the village of Toya. Its natural beauty has made it an attractive destination and was a major reason for it being chosen as the site of the 2008 G8 summit. Toya Station is an excellent point of entry for those looking to visit Toyako.

When it comes to attractions in Toyako, the natural surroundings are where they’re at. One of the first areas to consider visiting is the Shilotsu-Toya National Park. There is also Mount Yotei - an active volcano that towers over the land and is nicknamed Ezo Fuji as it resembles Mount Fuji. Lake Toya is a major draw with a beautiful expanse of calm waters surrounding Nakajima Island which is seen centered in the lake. Hills and mountains surround the lakes, and a visit to Mount Usu is convenient, being located between the town and lake. The areas around Jozan-kei, Toyohira Gorge, and Nakayama Pass are also popular draws. The moss-covered cavern of Koke-no-domon at the foot of Mount Tarumae could provide some excellent exploration as well.
