  1. More about Utsunomiya

The capital city of Tochigi prefecture, Utsunomiya is a quiet and interesting place that’s worth exploring at least for a few days. The city is served by Japan’s very efficient railway system, especially as the city is a major transportation hub and most of the lines stopping at Utsunomiya Station connect the city to almost all major areas of the country.

Built in the early 1930s, the Matsugamine Catholic Church is unique in that it’s one of the oldest buildings made of Ohya Stone that is still surviving today. The church is built in the classic Romanesque style, often standing out against the traditionally Japanese architecture that’s found throughout the rest of the city.

Futaarayama Shrine is one of the most popular attractions in this area. The shrine is located atop a large stairway, providing a beautiful panoramic view of the city from the top.

There’s much more to see and do in Utsunomiya, and the interactive map on this page is a great way to explore where the attractions and hotels can be found in this exciting city.
