Xi Ning is good when you need to travel to Xin Jiang. Stay a couple of days and go to Qing Hai Lake for a tour.
Xining is a very beautiful, very clean, well laid out, cozy city with very good shopping, the great Dongguan Mosque and the Nanguan Mosque.
The street life is very interesting to participate in for shopping and taking local activities photographs. The muslim women are very beautiful in their head scarves. The market behind the Dongguan Mosque is a photographer's paradise. There is easy access by bus in one and a half hours to Qinghai Lake where I spent a delightful day. The staff woman at the Bayi Bus Station personally looked out for me to see I got on the correct bus. I would not have found the bus on my own. The Qinghai Provincial Museum is beautifully done and it was free when I showed my passport. The people all over the city are extremely friendly and there is lots to see, for example Kumbum Monastery (only 3 kuai bus trip) is thrilling to see, and Ma Gufang Mansion was very nice and showed the history. Lots of fresh fruit and local beef noodle specialties to eat - very economical!I had a wonderful time in my five days in Xining.
from Xining to Chinghai lake is about 1.30 hour. Chinghai is a place for sight seeing, nothing much at night, so choose to stay Xining.
Xining got a lot of shopping and dining place
Great place and great city A place you can walk around, people are very friendly (though very little english speaking)I have been helped a lot while looking for a place to sleep (after the bad experience with Nobulingka Hotel).
Loved the museum, and the Tibetan Center (new place), the mosque and of course Kumbum monastery.
Half way stop between Beijing and Lhasa and a holy lake is 150kms from town. Very busy and interesting markets at nigfht and food market with many different meats and seafood.
This city was mostly inhibited by Tibetans and the Hui muslims. Now the Hans are the ones in control of trade & commerce, including travel industry.
Intermarriage among the races is not very common but nevertheless accepted by the general population. A vist to the Grand mosque is education as this mosque is one of the 4 great mosques in Northwest China. Anytime of the year is great to vist the Qinghai Lake but bird watchers should come in April/May and stay around there. There is no entry fees but it is quite far from the Lake entrance. Oyah! This is a salt water lake 4 times the size of Hong Kong.
