Following the Singapore River through the city center, the Clarke Quay/Riverside district harbors the best mix of old and new Singapore. Boasting colonial heritage, modern high-rises and a few world-class attractions, this is a district where tourists spend much of their time.
Most of the colonial architecture is on the north bank of the river, where there are several four- and five-star hotels in Riverside. Some of these are housed in heritage buildings; others are completely modern. The most attractive riverfront district is Robertson Quay, with its cultural institutes, art galleries and trendy cafés.
The layout is different on the southern bank of the river, with modern high-rises dominating the scene. There is not as much accommodation on this side, and the focus is instead on business and finance. Farther down the river, there are more hotels near Clarke Quay.
Both sides of the river excel at cosmopolitan living. Locals come here to shop at Great World City or to visit chic clubs near Clarke Quay. Tourists with accommodation in Clarke Quay / Riverside enjoy one of Singapore’s most convenient locations, with all of the major shops, restaurants and nightclubs within easy walking distance.
