Budget price for an amazing, tranquil view”
My trip to Koh Chang was only 2 nights. I wish it was longer - it's such a beautiful place. It's quite a distance to Cliff Cottages but a Baht Bus can take you there fore around (don't do what I did and allow the ferry company to book this for you!). Please also visit Cliff Cottages website for more useful info. When I arrived, I met the manager, Shaun and his family. It's such a relaxed place, you really feel as though you've stepped off the tourist track. Shaun was great at providing useful information and even helped book excursions, arrange taxis, rent scooters around the island, and rent snorkeling gear and Shaun was very knowledgeable about Thai culture and the doo's and dont's when it comes to getting the best deal - customer service here was exceptional. I stayed in one of the huts which are very basic but if you are looking for cheap lodgings, or escape from the busy 9-5, you very quickly adapt to how peaceful the place is. Frequently, I was be amazed that I was overlooking the sea horizon and at night could hear the relaxing waves from the sea. The views are spectactular - you can truly take picture postcard sunsets. On the other side of Cliff Cottages, there is a pier to capture sunrise. It's such a hidden gem of a place - not very touristy, very near the town (a 5 minute walk) and you are there with the locals. I felt safe even walking when it was dark and there was no lighting (but do bring a torch as it is completely dark!!). I know if I was not passing through, I could've quite easily spent a month there (and I made friends with some that stayed there for a long time!). Free WiFi is also available, and there is an on-site restaurant serving food from 8am-8pm (appx) and the food is more than satisfactory and reasonable. Furthermore, I don't think I have ever stayed in place where the staff have been this friendly and honest.
Really friendly place”
all the staff at cliff cottage were really friendly, shaun the is so helpful, he was more than happy to give us loads of advice on what to do. we were worried about booking here as it has many very mixed reviews. please take my advice, if you want somewhere with amazing views, friendly staff, good food and chilled out atmosphere then book it. dont listen to the bad reviews. yes the huts are simple. but at what point does it say differently? bed, mosquito net, fan. there are people saying it was to basic? what were they expecting?? its a hut in thialand. thats said though the beds were extremly comfy. compaired to some weve stayed in in thialand there really good. you must ask for huts numbered from 24-27 though. 25 being the best, i dont think you get accomidation that well positioned for sunsets anywhere else in the world. next thing we were worried about was price of food. there charging the same price as any other restaurant on koh chang. yes its more than the mainland but thats because it costs more to inport it. also we had the best meals weve had in thialand here, the food is so fresh, loads of vegetables. we were worried when we read the good reviews that they might be fake and it was going to be awful. trust me it will not disappoint!
A Wonderful Spot for Sunset ”
We were travelling without prior checking the places around, without reading advice or lonely planet-things.... in other words, discovering everything by ourselves.... And we were pretty surprised to happen in Cliff Cottages!!! From the first moment we were welcomed by the owner with a smile and nice joking, even we felt super tired after a night trip, we felt relaxed having a breakfast and chilling in the hammocks while waiting for the check-in.... The staff tried their best to help us with the early check-in even they were fully booked. We booked 2 nights with Booking.com and the rest of our Koh Chang - holiday we stayed in a different place because Cliff Cottages was full and not available.... Very attentive staff the best location for sunset... We found our special spot, put on the music with a loudspeaker, had a glass of wine and nobody was disturbed by us in the area.... Its far from the famous beaches of Koh Chang, but it gives you other opportunities to explore the abandoned spots that you can't reach by car or motorbike....and .... having a nice dining at Fishing Village with a walking distance whereas you would feel lazy to travel from White Sand Beach or even Kae Bae.... Thank you, dear team of Cliff Cottages for a nice piece of our experience)
Perfect Island Week ”
I spent 5 nights at Cliff Cottage, and they went by far too quickly. It is located in a private bay to the side of Bangbao, so it's extremely quiet and isolated. Spent many hours relaxing in the hammocks in the communal area and enjoying the delicious food (especially recommend the curries and pad thai). But it's also close enough to walk to the Bangbao pier in a few minutes, and they will facilitate diving, snorkeling, kayaking etc - the owner also owns Scubadawgs diving in Bangbao. So all in all it's the best of both worlds - relaxation and activities. I stayed in one of the new glamping tents, and would highly recommend trying them out! The front-most tents have amazing views over the cliff, and it's so good to go to sleep and wake up to the sound of the sea below.
Best Chillout spot in Thailand”
On arriving we were warmly meet and greeted by Shaun the owner of cliff cottages who then showed us to ourFan /airconditioned room,it was bright bright ,clean and airy. The chillout area overlooking the rocky beach[Ideal for swimming or snorkeling] was brilliant open and conducive for meals or talking to fellow travellers. The meals were simple good food at a good price. The staff and Shaun,s family were delightful and really made this such a memorable holiday for us We would recommend anyone wanting a relaxing, quiet escape in an Ideal location stay at cliff cottages.
Clean, great view, friendly staff”
We stayed in a tent - style accommodation and it was such a great experience. The tents are very new and maintained clean - no bugs can come in unless you let your zip opened! The view was simply amazing every morning/sunset, sleeping to the sounds of wave, waking up with a bright sunrise above the sea. Toilet/shower facilities get cleaned very often so they're like new whenever you use them. Food was good, coffee in the morning was good, a couple of hammocks to chill out, and generally the place is very relaxed and beautiful. The only thing is the location, obviously it's right at the cliff so its a bit far from restaurants, 7/11, etc (10-15 mins walk in dark if at night) but you can easily rent a motorbike from the cottage and the problem is solved! Shaun, the owner, was very helpful and kind enough to give us a ride to another place as well - thank you so much for your kind gesture Shaun! Koh Chang is an absolutely stunning place, and I'm sure I'll be back and choose to stay at the cliff cottage!
Lovely and peaceful”
friendly staff and lovely peaceful atmosphere. i stayed in the air-con bungalow and it was really comfortable. there is a small beach right by the bungalows but not suitable for swimming! bang bao itself is really charming and a really easy walk from cliff cottages. if you are looking for a peaceful place to stay which is away from all the night life, then this is the ideal place for you.
Amazing stay at Cliff Cottages! I have stayed here several times before and will stay here again. The lounge is a great place to chill in a hammock with a cold beer after a day of awesome diving at the nearby; wrecks, local dive sites and, marine park. If you're lucky you may get to see a whale shark! The staff at cliff cottage very pleasant and helpful and give the resort a great family feel.
Little oasis in Bang Bao”
Comming to Cliff Cottage a small oasis reveals it self at a small bay The restaurent/reception area is placed with a very nice view over the gulf of Thailand and has a tranquil ambience The bungalow was very basic attop a cliff. A room with a fan and a mosquito net Clean and simpel and quiet Monkeys and gekkos included You must how ever be ready to make a jurney down the many stairs every time you need the bathroom and shower
Simple rooms with nice staff”
We stayed in Cliff Cottage 2 weeks. The rooms are simple but clearly. The staff was friendly and helpful. The sea was delusion. We would have snorkling, but the sea and the environs was terrible. Cliff Cottage hasen't got a place where you can snorkling, but although themselves are advertised so. It was delusion for us...
Relaxing and laid back”
We really enjoyed our stay at Cliff Cottage and we actually extended our time there. Shaun (the owner) and his delightful family and staff went out of their way to make sure we got the most out of our stay. We had a day out on their boat SCUBA diving and snorkelling at very cheap rates which included lunch, fresh fruit and drinks. The staff on board were fun and encouraging to those both in and out of the water. We made full use of the motorbike hire and was able to explore the area at our own leisurely pace. Next door has a really nice swimming pool and we were able to make use of those amenities while we were there also. The food was excellent and very well priced so we felt no need to look elsewhere for our dining. We will definitely be looking forward to another relaxing visit in the future. The only negative point I felt was that the waterfront area`s could be kept cleaner of rubbish and debris although this all washes up with the tides so it would be an ongoing job but I feel a worthwhile task. 10 out of 10 for service, value and staff!
Good for relaxation”
We stayed here throughout our backpacking trip of south east Asia. All in all we had a great time.Price was a little expensive for Thailand but the cottages were of a good size, clean and a hot shower. Bang Bao was a nice little place and had some good options for food. Was also a good base for boat trips. Food was nice although like other reviewers have said more expensive than other places. There's a hotel next door that does amazing food and also has a fabulous sunset bar. My only negative would have to be that the staff weren't very attentive at times. There were many occasions when we were waiting to be served and they made no effort to acknowledge us and spent their time either on the laptop or on their mobiles.
Best hotel staff in the kingdom”
After 2 months in thailand I can honestly say that the staff at this hotel are by far the most friendly, welcoming, and helpful of all. some of the hilltop bungalows have great sunset views and are a good value as well as having a great vibe. Shared bathrooms were always clean The owner is a great guy and very knowledgeable about recreation opportunities near and far. He was always willing to offer advice and very helpful with making arrangements for onward travel. These guys are really genuine and willing to help because they want you to have a good time, not cause there trying to sell you something. I can also recommend scuba diving with their in house dive shop as well. All the gear was new and the boat was really well outfitted. They have all the local knowledge and experience to make sure you have a good time in the water. If I were to go back to Koh Chang I would stay and dive with these guys again for sure. No need to look any where else.
Bare necessities but overall great experience!”
One of the owners (Sean I believe is his name) speaks perfect English and is very knowledgeable on the area. He is very willing to help you book extra activities (such as elephant rides and snorkeling excursions) and was available by phone every time I tried calling. The room we booked was a fan room and was right near the water. Although it was a little more than the basic huts, it was definitely worth it. There were some ants in the room but neither of us minded that too much. It may be hard to find the hotel, but if you have any problems just give Sean a call. Food is on the pricier side (compared to meals at some Thai restaurants in Bang Bao).
Great place to do ocean activities with family”
I booked 2 family size & one 2 person for our group of 9, kids infant, 2, 5, 9, 12, 14, +1 friend. The tents are huge, our whole family could have fit in one of them. The mattresses were nice and thick, firm, like Thais like them, but comfortable for me. The bedding in one tent seemed to have been sitting for a few days and was quite mildewed smelling, as happens quickly near the ocean. The staff were great. They offered me an upgrade to one of the air conditioned rooms. I opted for a smaller tent instead because we loved the tents. Let me tell you about these tents. From the bathroom you climb 74 uneven steps to reach them. From the top you can choose which way to look. On one side, sunrise over bangbao bay, on the other, two little coves and the sound of crashing waves to lull you to sleep at night. My tent faced the bay and we didn't even need a fan in the middle of the night if the flap was open because the sea breeze cooled us. This was in hot season mind you, the rest of the country was experiencing super high temps. Things you should know if with kids: The laundry service mentioned is not at the location, but down the road a short way and cost 40baht/kilo. The pool is deep. Too deep for our 5 year old to stand in the shallow end. Swimmers only in there. The restaurant is reasonable compared to others in the area, expensive if you're used to mainland non tourist prices. The food is great though. There's a little Thai place in the fishing village at the end of the pier that's super cheap. You could borrow a free kayak, go over in about 10 minutes, dock at the pier, and come back with cheap dinner. Our older kids loved the kayaking and the snorkeling, super clear water, lots of marine life, and the little walks around the area. If you want to sit on a beautiful sandy beach, don't come here. If you Iike to get in the water, and love natural beauty and rocky shores, this is your place. Bonus, I lost 10 lbs in 3 days hauling up and down those stairs.
Attempted break in”
I will start by saying I have stayed at Cliff cottage 4 separate times and have never had a problem until this last stay. Staff, location, price etc are all good. However I was awoken at 3:30 a.m. by somebody entering my room, they had unlocked the door and opened it. When I shouted the person ran. Coincidentally it was my last night and I was leaving early that morning to go to an island that requires cash only.
Too far from everything”
It's too far away from everything, it's at an isolated area Bang Bao, and you have to walk at least 20 mins to get to main road, nothing is close by other than its own bar/ restaurant. If you plan to stay here for its quietness and explore Koh Chang with a motorbike like I planned. I'd not recommend it at all unless you are a really experienced biker. Lots of steep hills and turns, and sandy roads too. So without a bike, there's not much you can do around here. I got my ticket to Koh Chang from the airport gate 8, the price should include free drop off to the hotel, but since it's so far from main area, I need to pay extra $150 bath. With return, it's even worse, too far to get pick-up, and when I tried to book a private taxi via the hotel a night before check out, I was told it will be $300, so I booked it with one of the staffs. The next day when I checked out and asked about the booked taxi, no one know about it, and they charger me double the price I was told the night before!!!!! Not impressive at all!!! There's a small and dirty beach across the cottage rooms. Other than that, near by the only place you can hang out is the bar/restaurant, and it's surrounded by rock, you can only sit in the restaurant to relax not a beach. The swimming pool they have is inside of the bar, it's small and no privacy at all. Room is spacious with nice hot shower , the TV in the doesn't work. Bed is ok to sleep on. Strong smell from sewer.
The hotel is located just out of town on a beautiful penincular. There is views on either side, one to the sea and the other to the bay. It's a short walk to the pier where most things happen around Bang Bao. There is a new owner but I think he is just finding his feet. The lovely woman that manages most things is super helpful. Rooms are fine for what you pay, I suppose. COmfortable beds, aircon, safe etc. My father's room had some issues, loud aircon, non flushing toilet and no hot water, they moved him to another room... that toilet didn't flush. I hope the food improves, it will do if your hungry but not really good value, head to town for better food! In essence it's a good lower budget place to stay, it has lots more potential though.
I was here for a jungle marathon. A passenger took my luggage from the bus, so I lost my gear, clothes and everything else. Luckily the manager Naiyana brought me to the village centre to buy things. She also drove me to the race site at 2am in the morning - it was a 3hr round trip for her, if not I would have to pay a fortune for a taxi at that time. The other staff at the hotel was also very friendly and helpful. View here is superb. Sea is only 10m from my cottage. Dining area overlooks the sea. The sunset and sunrise here is fantastic. Very quiet and peaceful, it is very conducive for a rural getawag. Also, there is a diving centre here so patrons can do watersports here too. The water is very clear, perfect for diving and snorkeling. There are also family friendly activities like kayaking. Extremely value for money resort!
Lovely spot on a private bay with good snorkeling”
what a great spot! we checked in for 5 days and ended up staying close to 3 weeks. shaun, nam and their staff are great, they really made us feel welcome and went out of their way to see to it we were happy. the chill-out area is overlooking a small secluded bay that has some good snorkeling and the sunsets from the top of the hill are spectacular. it's a 5 minute to the village where you can go on diving or snorkeling trips. you can also book all sorts of tours through the resort where there is no pressure to buy. we recommend it and when we're back on chang we'll stay here again. :)
