Perfect hotel! ”
We booked Coffee Atelier in Penang for two nights. The staff of the hotel is very friendly and will help you with everything. We have had a room on ground floor and was fantastic! It was spacious, clean and refurbished very nicely. Breakfast was good, also the coffee and wine were very good. Rubilyn who works there (and also the other staff), are more than happy to inform you about things to do in Penang and will help arrange. If you are interested, feel free to ask her if you can see the gallery of the owner, beautiful paintings are stored. We will definately go back to coffee atelier.

Location, quality and attitude - Perfect!”
The most notable aspect of our stay at the Coffee Atelier was the communication with the owner Stefan. His replies were immediate and no questions remained unanswered. Nothing was too much trouble and every aspect of our stay was efficiently organised. The history of the hotel is extremely interesting and the location in the heart but quiet part of UNESCO heritage Georgetown is perfect. Our meals were tasty and perfect size and the staff led by Rubi were just fantastic. This was a great stay and we have no hesitation in recommending the Coffee Atelier to our friends and the Agoda community.

Great BnB in World Heritage site”
The Coffee Atelier consists of five old Chinese shop houses next to each other - two have two suites each, one has a little gallery, one has the reception / greeting area and the corner one hosts the actual café which would also be the place where we had breakfast. The suites have all the necessary amenities without destroying the charm of the old shop houses - this means that you do have AC, fans, a flatscreen TV (never used - why would you need this in Penang?), a fridge etc but the paint on the wall or the wooden stairs was left in its original style. The furniture was early 20th century Chinese style, the bed was super comfortable and the bathrooms were wide and open. Our breakfast was delicious and we did enjoy the coffee a lot. We enjoyed our stay in Penang a lot and having the Coffee Atelier as a base was just perfect due to its central location and the friendly staff. We ended up having drinks at the end of the night in front of our house and were very glad we explored this beautiful spot for a weekend.

A personable guest house with a colonial touch”
We had a short stay but with a lasting impression of Coffee Atelier. The hotel kitchen made exception for us but extending their open hour past 10pm the night we arrived as our train (hence the ferry) got delayed. After knowing we had to leave very early the next morning, they decided to let us enjoy the breakfast included in the room price. The Swiss owner approached then to have a good chat, introducing nice spots in the town. The taxi was a bit difficult to get in the next morning, I got an idea to seek help from a random neighbor, a nice speaking local Chinese. He then offered to drive us to the ferry point just in time to catch the departure time. We'll definitely use the hotel should we have a chance to visit Penang again.

Rustic old-world charm, perhaps a bit too rustic.”
coffee atelier is the former straits collection, and comprises of several rooms spread over a couple of old colonial shophouses. each room takes pretty much an entire floor, excluding the entrance area. the ground floor room we stayed in had a dresser/entrance area, a bedroom, and a large bathroom/covered courtyard area. some may find the rustic design and unique shower/toilet cubicles interesting, others may feel the age and the crampness of said cubicles unappealing. the rooms come with typical modern hotel amenities, such as a minibar/coffee facilities, air-conditioning, wi-fi, a flat screen tele and limited astro channels. the bed is very comfortable, and has a mosquito net to ensure a restful sleep. being a shophouse, the room has a secure metal rear door which leads to an alleyway behind, and as such should never be opened. however, one can possibly be disturbed by the sounds from the back alley, especially with the proximity of several restaurants nearby which have kitchens opening into the alley. as it is commercial noise, at night there is only the sounds of occasional vehicles a distance away. staying in a colonial shophouse is an experience. coffee atelier has maintained what the previous owner has built, and from the reactions of foreign travellers, it is clear that this old-world charm has something valuable to offer. don't expect a bright and spotless boutique room - what you get is walls that have 100 year old paint peeling from them, antique furniture and a layout suited for life a century ago. which, really, may not be a bad thing if you're keen on completely immersing yourself into historic penang.

Great location, sensitively restored”
Georgetown is now awash with heritage boutique hotels that claim to be quirky, but are in fact, rather generic (generic peranakan tiles, 'retro/old' furniture thrown together, in a restored shophouse) Coffee Atelier sets itself apart for truly respecting the space. Each shophouse has only two rooms. I stayed on the ground floor room and was truly impressed by Stefan's vision of keeping the past life of this shophouse alive. No major structural changes were made, the floor, scuffed from decades from use remained and reminded me of how it used to be bustling with people getting on with their days in this building. The air well was kept open and provided a cool respite from the afternoon heat in the streets. Having spent my childhood in a shophouse myself, I really appreciated all the little things that reminded me of home, growing up!

A great character find in old Georgetown”
Never having been to Penang before we were not sure exactly what to expect. The reception at Coffee Atelier was warm and helpful. The hotel is a charming mix of old features and modern amenities. The spacious room overlooked the lively Lorong Stewart and could be a problem for light sleepers. The spacious semi-open bathroom also allowed the sounds of the neighbourhood to be experienced, more of a plus than minus. Although we had forgotten to explain our need for gluten-free breakfast, we were grateful that the hosts were gracious enough to accommodate our needs and the service from the owners and staff were in all other ways excellent. As a central location for exploring this most delightful of Malaysian cities, this hotel cannot be beaten.

You won't regret it”
We had a great time at the Coffee Atelier. We were warmly welcomed by Lorina and Stefan, and had many friendly interactions with them during our three day stay, including an enjoyable Christmas Eve meal. Their staff are also very lovely and helpful. The small and stylish cafe acts as a hub for this boutique guesthouse, where you can always find a friendly smile, helpful advice, or simply great espresso coffee. The location is perfect for exploring historic Georgetown, with everything an easy walk away. There's plenty to explore, but if you don't the guesthouse is a lovely place to waste time, whether with a glass of wine, having a look at the art, or watching a DVD.

An absolute delight in the heart of GeorgeTown”
A gorgeous hotel with so many unique touches that make it feel like staying with friends and not at a hotel. The staff at Coffee Atelier couldn't be more helpful and friendly - but just the perfect amount, without being fake. The room with was beautiful and we especially loved the feeling of showering outdoors (you're not, btw). Highly recommend the Coffee Atelier and would stay here again in a heartbeat! :)

Great Location / Beautiful Room”
coffee atelier was a great little place to stay for the end of my trip, the fact that they tried to keep the building original except for the modern plumbing and aircon. this place was in a great location in georgetown. it only has 4 rooms which is fantastic as its not noisey, it was the perfect place to wind down and relax at the end of my holiday.

A hidden gem”
Its an old shoplot inside a UNESCO site. We got a very large space which is very unexpected. They divide the shoplot into 2, upstairs and downstairs with a shared living room. And we got the whole downstairs just for the 2 of us. Interior has very nice cultural and historical touch. It feels luxurious you just want to spend time inside the room doing nothing. Staff is very friendly. The reception lady is very welcoming and the barista is cute and smiley. Location wise, superb. We planned to explore the UNESCO sites, the murals and the cutural and heritage walk around, and the best way to do it is to stay in it! Walking distance from Little India, Nasi kandar beratur, Kapitan Mosque, Armenian St and esp. our fave desert place the China House. Coffee Atelier is recommended. It is just great in every possible way. Parking is scarce but the reception is kind enough to spare us a parking just in front the place. I had a great time.

I will recommend to my friends”
My girl friend and I stayed at Coffee Atelier last August 22-24, 2014. I love the quaintness of this place. The owners purposely retained many of the original architectural details of the building which added to its charm. The floors, the walls... The fact that they converted part of the building into an art gallery is a plus. They also retained the area where coffee was being processed and put up framed information about the previous owners. It was lovely! The staff were wonderful. We arrived too early and, our fault, we did not inform them earlier. But they kindly accomodated us and immediately prepared our suite after the previous occupant left. They also arranged for us our walking tour and choosing, according to many locals, the best tour guide in town. So thank you very much! And the breakfasts and coffee were wonderful :)

truly local experience!”
at coffee atelier, i love that i get to live like the locals do in georgetown. it's like staying in an old house with attention to modern detail such as the dvd player, gryphon tea satchets and the toilet + shower area. the suite has retained a lot of the old penang charm, which provides a much different holiday experience as compared to staying in a proper hotel. location is great and close to many attractions. staff were very friendly and helpful as well!

Very lovely stay”
Coffee Atelier consists of a row of 4 shophouses, double storied. The corner lot is an in-house cafe restaurant, while the other 3 are accomodation. Booked 2 units of rooms for my family, with the intention of being in the same shophouse unit. Upon arrival, the owner asked if we mind splitting into 2 upper floor units, as the the lower flrs have been occupied. Well not a problem for us ! The room is just as expected - original condition, not dilapidated, but restored to its original glory. The furnitures are not from the olden days, but constructed to mirror the architecture from the days. It's a spacious bedroom, and the complimentary 2nd room is a smallish unit but sufficient to fit 2 more people.

Great location and great service”
Great location in the Georgetown heritage area so easy access to various attractions, food & craft markets, etc. Also close to bus routes to different parts of Penang. Appreciated the good quality coffee in the room - a step up from the usual instant coffee. We had the upstairs suite that had a large bedroom (with kingsize bed) and a small single room for our (young adult) son. Both rooms had air cond and it was great for all of us to have some privacy. Much better than other "triples" that we've stayed in.

Unique and special accommodation”
We loved the Coffee Atelier. Ruby and the staff were excellent - friendly and helpful with great advice for restaurants. The room is so unique and beautiful. It was kept in it's original design so you feel surrounded by history. The hotel is located in the middle of the historical district and great restaurants and attractions are easily walkable. I highly recommend this hotel.
