Way overpriced for a shared accomodation”
As titled, it's way overpriced for a shared accommodation. We stayed at one of the Forest Houses with 3 rooms inside, one of which was taken by a family from the Mainland while we were given a room on the second floor. The interior of the room was clean but neither spacious nor luxurious, just like many modern bachelor apartments nowadays. I have nothing against the Mainlanders but many of them tend to be inconsiderate. The kitchen and living room are supposed to be a common area. Nah, it wasn't the case. The couches and dining table were completely filled with their stuff. What made things worse is that we were awaken early in the morning before 0700hrs by the yelling and loud conversations from downstairs. You can imagine there is barely any acoustics/noise isolation. Good that we only stayed there for one night. Location wise, it's not too far from the Beijing Capital Airport. We drove and it took us about 90 minutes with the traffic, but I heard from the people whom I talked to saying that it was virtually impossible to hire a taxi to get here from the airport. If you were to come here to see those architectural masterpieces which once were described as a "New Architectural Wonder of China", think twice. Many of these villas have not been maintained properly or I should say haven't been maintained at all. Spalled concrete, corroded structural steel members, shabby wooden features and signs of poor workmanship are everywhere. After all these years, they deserve to be renovated. Enough of the bad stuff. What's good about this hotel is their "private" Great Wall. After walking an approximately 2 km long rugged trail at the outskirt of the hotel, you can get onto the Great Wall. There was hardly anyone there and it was nice and quiet. Great for photo shooting which you can hardly do over at Badaling. My suggestion is that if you have been to this section of the Great Wall, you might as well forget about Badaling. We went to Badaling after we checked out and the

In poor condition for such an expensive hotel”
the location and the private path to the Great Wall
A bit of a disaster. The room was shabby and in poor condition. The broken down blinds wouldn't close or open properly and looked like they were from a tenement, not an expensive hotel. I noted the problem on arrival and was told an engineer would come. Never happend. Late that night, the manager came to apologize, but at that point the damage was done. Too tired and too late to change rooms. To make it worse, in the morning there was no hot water in the bathroom.

Good, but it could have been better!”
Secluded but accessible
First the good points. 1-After expressing disappointment with our room, we were quickly upgraded to a much nicer 2-room suite. In the suite, the bathroom was very nice, and the 2 rooms were big. But there were stains on some of the upholstery. 2-This is a nice enclave style property. You feel like you've gotten away from it all. 3-As an experiment in western architecture, it's fun to stroll around the very large property grounds...but after only 10 years, some of the property already looks a bit frayed, as do some of the staff uniforms. Now for some of the bad. 1-Dinner-time Room Service was delivered/served in plastic takeout containers instead of plates. (?!?!) 2-When it comes to complimentary tea service and other similar offers for guests, staff should "get it right the first time". 3-The pool is closed too early, at 7pm. Overall, it was a pleasant stay but there's a lot of room for improvement. It's all about attention to detail!

Worst hotel ever.”
No great things, worst hotel ever.
I can tell you this hotel is the worst I have ever stayed, and by a long shot. Upon arrival, thy tried to shuffle us into a decrepit room, my girlfriend found cobwebs in the toilet! We changed room immediately, gave us a damp and dark place. Accepted it. So we had ordered room service for dinner, it came in plastic boxes! For the amount we are paying, it is atrocious. Plastic boxes carried in a plastic bag. The staff broke the plates (porcelain plates) while unpacking first time, so he brought it all back to redo, came back, the food had hair in it...at this time, the floor had broken shards of porcelain, we were very hungry, so proceeded to had dinner. The cleaners came during dinner wanting to sweep it up, but we said we are having dinner, leave it alone, and sweep tomorrow during cleaning. Next day, went out, I put the plastic saying "change my sheets" on the bed as needed. Ordered the hotel to arrange car transport for us to visit badaling great wall, they charged us 500rmb for a round trip, saying its 20+minutes away, so we had to pay. Fine, I paid.

COOL , SERVICE, NICE ROOMS
NO PRIVATE TRAIL TO GREAT WALL. IT’S A SHUT DOWN BY GOVERNMENT AND THE HOTEL DOESN’T TELL PEOPLE UNTIL AT CHECK IN!!! TRANSPORTATION IN FROM BEIJING CITY CENTER COSTED $350 CNY ON A REGULAR TAXI AFTER BARGINING. ON THE WAY OUT TO BEIJING AIRPORT, BECAUSE THE HOTEL KNOWS WE ARE STUCK, OPTIONS ARE 1) HOTEL CAR $1000+ CNY 2) HOTEL CALL A REGULAR TAXI FOR US $600 CNY 3) TAKE THE PUBLIC BUS FROM THE VILLAGE $2 (not sure how to get there and how long it will take) The above are experiences from my trip. Other than that, it’s a nice & cool hotel

Supurb unrestored wall!”
Unrestored great wall, great mountain views, unique architecture
We spent one night at the Commune to make sure we had time to ee restored Badaling and the unrestored hotel section. The htel setion is unbelievabe! There is a short climb up to the wall and it was very doable, even though we aren't hikers. Hotel was nice, but not spectacular. Would be great for families as there is an abundance of space.

It's all about the location”
Private piece of wall can't be beaten
For a while now I've wanted to stay here, drawn mostly by the appealing combination of distinctive, modernist villas with the exotic location by the Great Wall. What I didn't even know about was what turned out to be its best feature: private access to an unrestored section of the Great Wall. It's a steep scramble up the hill, but wow is it worth it: picturesquely overgrown with rambling plants and wildflowers, it's an intensely evocative experience - one everyone else can only dream of as they slum it with the teeming crowds, abrasive hawkers and shoving tourists on the regular section of wall nearby. Oh, and the rest of the resort-style hotel is lovely as well, in a very low-key way. We were in the 'bamboo', which was a particularly beautiful and spacious design. I was surprised to discover that we were sharing a living space and terrace with others in the same villa, but it would make for an amazing group accommodation option. The only odd thing was the outdoor swimming pool, which was nicely designed with a very attractive cafe next to it, but was ICY cold, despite it being hot early September weather. Even at the height of summer it's hard to imagine that being anything other than extremely bracing.

not just your everyday hotel!”
Lots of space, beautiful views and scenery, great food and simple but modern design
we loved the commune by the wall. it's on an enormous piece of land so all of the apartments are very seperate and private. it was a 5 min walk to the main 'hub' for meals but it was nice to get outside and enjoy the space - especially coming from hong kong! i tihnk it's the kind of place that would have something to offer all year round and we love the hike with glimpses off the wall from various points of the property.

Not what we were expecting”
Good access to the wall, and the food was ok in the Chinese restaurant
Looking back on the holiday, I would have much rather spent the money on a nicer hotel in the city with a day trip to the wall. The accomadation was not worth what we paid, the room was in a large shared building, the room we stayed in was musty, insects in the bathroom, showerhead broken, generally not pleasent. Some of the reception staff were rude and had no interest in helping with our queries, simply passed on to the next person. We tried to arrange a car to see the wall at Badaling, after getting told this was not possible, a hotel car turned up, then a village car which we ended up getting in.

Stunning architecture in beautiful scenery”
Surrounding countryside and access to Great Wall
Welcome break from madness of Beijing in National Autumn holiday week. If you like modern architecture this is definitely worth a visit. The rooms are within houses with shared kitchen, dining areas. We stayed in bamboo house. The other rooms were occupied by families with small children so could be noisy in the morning. We did not use kitchen but ate in the restaurants. We enjoyed the food in the western restaurant. Maybe it was our choice of dishes but the Chines restaurant did not compare to our other dining experiences in China. For the price the service was not great but you could not beat the position of the hotel.

Once this hotel "was" very nice, now faded glory”
Location (if you like tranquility), architecture (modern), bathroom (huge)
This hotel is very nicely located in the tranquility of the mountains close to the great wall. The setup is very nice and modern with different villas housing each a kind of open meeting room and about 6 to 12 guest rooms. Don't book this hotel if you want to be close to Beijing, it is about 75 km from Beijing in the middle of nowhere. Also don't expect to have a view on the wall from your hotel room as shown on earlier pictures. In some cases the distance from the villas to the main reception and restaurant building can be very far and hilly. There is a free shuttle service (on call) by car, which brings you wherever you want on the domain. However, I would not advise this hotel to people who are having difficulty walking if you want to visit the section of the wall which is directly accessible from the hotel. A very steep path leads you in about 20 minutes to a non renovated part of the wall. Because of the bad condition of the path (rocks) it is difficult to walk on. Once you reach the wall, the views are breathtaking. However, I can't be very positive about the hotel itself. It is definitely not worth the money. The front desk receptionists and the other personel are not friendly, they act clumsy and they even let you carry in your own luggage if you don't demand. There English is also horrible. These are all things which are inappropriate for a hotel in this price range, even when it is in China. Also the maintenance of the property is inadequate, a lot of villas and their surroundings look dilapidated and the clealiness of the rooms could be better. I have the feeling the hotel is poorly managed. Because of the setup and the price of the hotel, the hotel looks to me more like a nice location for business gatherings or conferences, but it is much less a hotel for tourists. To conclude I would advise to give the staff a very thoroug training and to change management.

Fantastic location but buildings a little tired”
Lovely quiet, pictureque setting with a fantastic location to the Great Wall & proximity to Beijing.
I would be disappointed if we had paid the full rack rate advertised as the rooms & buildings have been left to wear & require some maintenance/repair. We were satisfied the rate we paid reflected the offering provided. The location is fantastic with access to it's own original parts of the Great Wall - so much better than walking on an immaculate renovated section with thousands of bus loads of tourists just down the road!! The Reception staff are lovely & welcoming, however the dining room both it's staff & product were poor. Food had a "pre-prepared" feel to it & service was slow with no attention made to us at all. We had to keep calling them for service. This was a little disappointing for us.
