What a pleasant surprise”

This hotel that opened for the Chicago World's fair in 1893 sits in the heart of Chicago's downtown (the Loop), with beautiful views of Lake Michigan, Grant and Millennium Parks, and the Buckingham fountain that is right across the street. Given the prime location, you would think it would long ago have been replaced by a post-modern resort that would cost several times as much. Instead this capacious hotel still sits in a much more appealing location than the more famous Palmer House, and seems to get by filling rooms with deals like the one I found on Agoda. Sure, our room didn't face the Lake, but we could still see it through the bay window that all rooms seem to have. The room itself was clean and well appointed. I would have preferred two queen beds to the two fulls that the room included, but the mattresses were comfortable and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious for a room in a large metro downtown. The staff was uniformly cheerful, pleasant, helpful and patient. The TV allowed us to stream a movie from a laptop through an HDMI cable that I always carry for that purpose. (This is not a given.) The hotel is huge but didn't feel close to full. For example, elevators always arrived promptly, the lobby always seemed to have room when we needed it. One thing we enjoyed (though others might not): The clientele of the hotel felt rich and varied; this is not a tony preserve of the elite. Negatives: The room smelled a little musty till housekeeping (quickly and politely) replaced the filter in the air conditioner. One day the chambermaid took our towels and didn't replace them. I had to call housekeeping twice before replacements were quickly and apologetically brought to the room. The carpet in the room feels too cushy; I had to lift my feet a bit further off the ground than I am used to in order to avoid catching my sole on the carpet. None of these really bothered us. (OK, the second phone call to housekeeping did annoy me.) For rooms this nice in a location th

Great place to stay in Chicago”

The Congress Plaza was just what we needed for our business trip to Chicago. Large room and bed, close to attractions and restaurants, easy to get where we wanted to go. The hotel itself is full of history, having been built in 1893, so not as modernized in some ways, but generally quite acceptable. We will stay there again if we go back.

Everything about the Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago is at the same time opening, excellent, and lay back. Check in and check out are as easy as opening a refrigerator. Staff is always "at your service" but never "in your face." Staying here is like staying with family.

My new fav in Chicago ”

The front desk was friendly and very accommodating! I felt taken care of as a solo traveler. The hotel is clean and charming with a lot of history. Some say it’s haunted 👻. Get the water facing rooms! Worth the extra few $. I suggest checking-in at odd times to avoid a line/waiting. Great location! Walking distance from the water and food spots., though the lobby has great atmosphere and a restaurant. Great place to stay if you want to explore but don’t want to go far from the hotel. Lot’s to do and see nearby (ie: Navy Pier, Shedd’s Aquarium, Chicago institute of Art, Buckingham Fountain, Millennium Park) and close connection to the loop transit trains that take you anywhere in Chicago. I’ll be staying here from now on!

Interesting Hotel”

Position, most things worked well

We enjoyed our stay in Chicago and the Congress Plaza was a good location for seeing the interesting sights in the city area. It's easy walking distance to the excellent Art Gallery and The Field natural history museum. The hotel has seen better days appearing to have been one of if not the premier hotel in Chicago. The size and scale of the building, particularly the public areas are large and interesting. The room we stayed in was clean and reasonably comfortable. Though there was a slight feel of tiredness about some of the room decor. Though everything we wanted worked. The staff in the hotel were excellent, helpful and pleasant.

A historic building along S Michigan Ave”

Convenient, helpful concierge, across from Grant Park

There is no option for leisure so I had to select Solo, although I was travelling with my mum. We stayed 3 nights at the Congress Plaza Hotel. The Hotel is located along S Michigan Ave, next to the Roosevelt University. The hotel is a short 7-10 minute walk to the Harrison Train station (Red Line) so that makes it easy to travel towards the city. If you do not mind walking, the walk up Michigan Ave and to the Magnificent Mile is nice. The hotel is across from Grant Park. Our room faced the train tracks so that could be a little noisy to some. The hotel and room interiors are rather tired but provided the necessary for a comfortable stay. The room size is a little smaller than some of the other hotels I stayed in on my trip but still reasonable. The front desk associate was unhelpful when we asked questions and immediately directed us to the Concierge (and no, she was not in a rush nor was there a line forming). The Concierge made recommendations on where we could catch the finals of the World Cup but unfortunately the sports bar was not opened at the time so we ended up watching it in the hotel's bar. He was however apologetic and suggested an alternative when we went back to inform him the sports bar was not opened. Overall, a good stay.

Check Out the View!”

We stayed in the south tower on the 11th floor in a Lake View King Room and had a view of the Buckingham Fountain directly in front of us, the Chicago skyline and Navy Pier to our left, and the Planetarium, Aquarium and Soldier Field to the right. There is a heater in the room but the windows also open a few inches for fresh air when the weather allows. The weather allowed us to open the windows and enjoy fresh air in our room over a few days, the rest of the days we used the heater since it was fall. The concierge staff were always helpful getting our car and giving directions and advice. The front desk staff were always helpful whenever we had a question. The housekeepers kept our room looking fresh and ready to return to and they let us know how to get in touch with them in case we needed anything. When we did ask for more towels and more coffee, they gave it to us happily. This is a GREAT and historic hotel in the perfect location in the heart of downtown Chicago. Enjoy Chitown!!

Met my needs”

I was travelling with my 13-yo son and we needed a safe place to sleep for half the price of the surrounding hotels that was in a great location. The Congress Plaza met our needs. It is not the most up-to-date hotel and it has a smell that reminded me of other buildings that were built in the early 1900's. If you are expecting a Hampton Inn or something similar, this is not the place for you. I found it very charming. I would definitely stay her again.

Old room with a style”

Location, price, view

The location of the hotel is just perfect. It is basically in downtown Chicago, within walking distance to anything. Walking to Navy Pier took us about 35-45 minutes. We had a room with a view to the Grant Park. The windows were huge, so the room was bright. We woke up and went to bed with the view of the Buckingham Fountain and the Lake behind it. It was beautiful. The room was spacious, but everything in it was quite old. The bathroom, the furniture, the carpet, the windows... everything was old. Which we actually liked, but some people might be looking for something more modern. The windows did not seem to close very well. I think they were also single pane. The room was quite noisy because of the heavy traffic from Michigan Avenue, and the street performers around the hotel. Luckily it didn't bother us too much. Generally we really liked the hotel. The rooms could use some remodeling, but I don't think that you can find many better deals in a similar location and with such a gorgeous view.

loved it”

I arrived after a grueling 26 hour journey. My room was spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable. I am not into spending unnecessarily on luxury to look at. I had a view of Grant park form my corner room. The hotel is conveniently located in down town Chicago close to all I needed including the passport office which was a 4 block walk. Also I did find a entry on the L train red line 5 blocks away. The lobby has some spectacular chandeliers and mosaics. I enjoyed reading about the history of construction, past Presidential patrons, and gangster activity. I will stay again if I return to Chicago.

A nice historic Hotel in a great location”

This is a historic building and thus the hotel is a bit dated. The lobby and some details of the building are still beautiful. They did some touch-up and changed the furniture in the room but some works need to be done for their bathroom. We enjoyed the lovely view of the park and the spaciousness of the room. It is very comfortable to move around and stay in for a while. The location is great. we could walk to anywhere. The Beans and Millennium Park are just a ten min walk. There are convenient stores, coffee shops as well as plenty of restaurants and bars within a short walking distance. With the price we paid and being in such a good location in downtown Chicago, we think this is quite a good option.

5 star hotel feel with 3 star rates”

When my husband and I arrived at this hotel, we were amazed with the location and the look and feel of this hotel. It's really way above the room rate paid by us. The location is superb where the railway and bus stations are just within the walking distance. We didn't expect to get complimentary breakfast but was given the coupons for continental breakfast throughout our stay. The room is very spacious with great view overlooking the lake. This hotel will definitely be in our list if we ever visit Chicago again.

Highly recommend. Check in was easy and I could use my debit card ($25/day deposit). The room was gorgeous and close to many things in Chicago. The price is daunting but the facilities are exactly what you would need for a short term stay. Congress Hotel, downtown Chicago”

Location, employees and grandure of the hotel

We had a very good time at the Plaza Hotel. While it is an old hotel, it is kept in nice condition and the employees were very friendly. The room was good with a great king bed. Only complaints are - the rooms do not have their own temperature controls. We found the room too warm and had to get a fan from the front desk and open the windows. The main restaurant wasn't open during the week, so we ate at the other hotel restaurant one night and the food wasn't very good. Also, there are walls on the main floor, back out of the main lobby area, that could use some paint. For the price,it was a good deal and we would return.
