French Polynesia hotels & accommodations

We stayed at this hotel at the start and finish of our French Polynesia adventure and it served us very well. The self catering facilities are of a similar standard to most places in this part of the world but you can cook a decent meal with one saucepan and frying pan. The infinity pool is good and there are trips available from reception. The rooms have more storage ...

We were in transit and arrived very late in Papeete, so the Hotel was perfectly located in walking distance 5 mins. Free internet is a big plus as WIFI is very expensive in French Polynesia. Bus goes to Papeete city but only until 6pm. return taxi better to airport then walk, it is cheaper

Maybe my expectations were higher than they should have been. I paid for an overwater bungalow which is very nice indeed. However, I had 5 minor complaints which I addressed and although the lady at the reception was friendly, little happened. The fridge was dirty and not cleaned, the safe was not working and disappeared after my complaint, the tap water is not drinkab...

We stayed here the night before flying home. The room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel is within walking distance to the ferry terminal but is in the industrial area so don’t expect nice views. We had a lot of traffic noise with motor bikes roaring up and down the street throughout the night. Sorry to say the restaurant menu is quite terrible. Hardly any choice ...

Brilliant level of service from the time my husband and I arrived. We were greeted by Melissa who showed us the resort and our villa. Highly recommend going for over the water villa. Breathtaking view and private. Waking up to that view of the crystal blue water is priceless and so relaxing. The team welcomed us with a bottle of champagne and truffle chocolates which a...

Electricity is expensive in French Polynesia - I understand, but arriving at almost 2am in a sticky room where the air conditioning wasn't running was/is not a pleasant experience. Took almost one hour for the air-conditioning to kick-in and bring the room down to a reasonable temperature. No black-out blinds, no cash kept on premises to change a CFP 10'000 note to pay...

During our 10 days stay in Tahiti, we stayed in 6 different hotels, and Hilton Moorea is the best among all. The lagoon is fantastic, the food is great, and the facilities are better than others. The only negative side, that they had a compulsory Christmas dinner policy which they did not inform us before. They published the information on their website, however m...

Very good hotel. Not in front of Matina beach (only public beach in Bora Bora) but 10 min. walk, so very good located. Room was very clean and big. I stayed in an ocean view room with an amazing view of the sea and terrace. Buffet breakfast was very good (not included in my price) with yoghurt, cereal, ham, cheese, delicious croissants and chocolate bread, fruits, etc....

The hotel has beautiful grounds, nice large man-made lagoon, and friendly staff. We were admitted to our room immediately upon arrival about 6:30am from LAX. Our room was large, clean and comfortable. We played music on the TV and watched some interesting French shows in the evening. The Le Carre restaurant was nice and food good but expensive (typical of Fr Polynesi...

The Opoa Beach Hotel where we’ve stayed the final 3 days of a 3-week trip to New Zealand and French Polynesia, is 9 cute cottages all decorated with local artisan craftwork, surrounding a small pool right by the waters edge on the east (sunrise) side of Raiatea looking towards Huahine. Free boat shuttle out the motu (little island w/beach on the reef surrounding the l...

I manage 25 vacation rental homes on the north coast of Oregon hence know the Sunset Beach Residence facility on the beautiful island of Moorea is a good one. New, clean, adequate stocked units are idea for a family and folks who don't like the resort scene. Really liked the deck. However, folks that don't speak french or don't know the area may struggle to procure fo...

We stayed at the Royal Tahitien for four nights in late March 2014. We stayed in a large 2nd floor room which had an ocean view overlooking the grounds of the hotel from the balcony and a view toward the mountains from the entrance door. The room had twin beds which could be converted to a king, a/c mini fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, flat screen TV with only F...

As in other islands in French Polynesia, the price of the accommodation is quite high. The food in the restaurant is tasty with reasonable in price. All the staff were helpful and kind. WiFi is extremely poor. It costs 500 XPF for 1 hour. But most of the time you would be waiting for the response. What you can do in 5 minutes normally took 1 hour or could not do at al...

This is the hotel you must see! We travelled first to Tahiti then to Moorea but still missed our dream shores, white sand beaches and the blue lagoons. Finally we arrived to this amazing resort and all dreams came true. We stayed in an over water bungallow which is hard to describe how beautiful is. Glass floor, perfect bed, perfect everything. This is the place that m...

Tamas, the owner, was extremely helpful and nice! On the terrace, we watched perhaps the most beautiful sunsets from all our trips in French Polynesia and afterwards, the sky full of stars. Feeling at ease and enjoying wonderful nature and the company of other nice people staying at the hotel! I would recommend to have a car though, although anywhere in Moorea it woul...

Disappointed that the activities I had pre arranged where not available which was one of the primary reasons I stayed there. Local staff much friendlier than their French counterparts. No surprise there. No wifi except at main building which is a drag if you just need to handle a few emails periodically

This was my first over the water bungalow stay and it was incredible. From the moment we walked in to check-in, we were treated wonderfully. And although the resort was full, it felt so peaceful and quiet all the time. The breakfast was the best I’ve ever had ANYWHERE! The room was breathtaking...waking up every morning and opening the curtains to that view was exquisi...

Great stay at the Thalasso. Expensive but worth it. We stayed in a Diamond OTW bungalow. Buffet breakfast was wonderful and included in the Agoda booking. Although we heard that if you arrive without a meal plan, the resort offers 50% off daily buffet breakfast (about $25 pp after the discount). Travelers may want to compare the IHG rate to Agoda rate with this discoun...

Even for a solo traveller Tipaniers is relatively affordable. As many bungalows sleep 4-6 people it is even better for families and groups. The restaurant is above average but the staff were really excellent - very helpful and courteous even if you don't speak French. I liked the mix of families, couples and even the odd solo traveller like me. The dive shop on site Ti...

Great place, fantastic beach, snorkel, kayak, paddle boards available for enyoing this place. In front a car, scooter and quad rental. A Magasin ( small market) 15min walking. But need to improve restaurant service. Employees always in a hurry, never smile and food is extremely expensive. Breakfast cost 20 euros and very poor. Drinks cost 15 euros and have so little a...

Lovely resort - the grounds have lots of tropical flowers and fruit trees. There is a very small beach. The location is great since it is close to town. The arrival could have been more welcoming and it would have been nice at such a high end resort to be shown to our room. Airport is about 5 minutes away and they charge $10 per person to pick you up and then $10 pp to...

Main pool was under construction. Water in front of property isn't really nice, go elsewhere. Rooms are a bit outdated. Don't worry about location, restaurants pickup for free. Very neutral about the place overall. The best thing about any place in Tahiti including this place are the locals. You'll never meet as friendly and honest people as them.

After a week in French Polynesian vacation, I missed my asian food. I bought the instant noodle from the nearby shop and asked for the hot water. The lady staff brought the noodle to the kitchen. After few minute, she brought my noodle in the well decor bowl. That was a surprise.

I stayed at the IC both at the beginning and end of a trip to Moorea. The first time my friend and I had booked a panoramic queen room and on my solo return I'd booked a king lagoon view room but was upgraded to a panoramic view which was a nice touch. The hotel is only 10 minutes from Faa'a airport (2000 XPF by taxi). The verdant grounds and lagoon-style pools are gor...

A slice of paradise, hidden gem in Bora Bora. Lush grounds, simple but very comfortable bungalows. Great vegetarian cuisine! If you look for the big hotel chains, probably not for you. But if you like authentic flair, traveling off the beaten paths, family-owned places then go for it! It is an amazing place where time stops and you enjoy each day as it comes and with w...

We stayed at Kaveka several nights and were really happy with our decision to spend most of the time in Moorea at this place. The price is quite ok for French Polynesia and the bungalow was nicely decorated in polynesian style. Rooms were quite modern and clean. Staff was very helpful and we enjoyed the quiet atmosphere as there were not many guests around. We would de...

We had an amazing stay with Alice and Raphael! Beautiful private beach with a view of mt. Otemanu and only 3 bungalows, so you basically have paradise to yourself. They offer kayak and SUP free of charge and are also super helpful to arrange other activities or provide a boat transfer to the shuttle boat to Vaitape. Alice is a great cook and spoiled us with delicious F...

Very good value for money especially for ourselves who wanted to self cater rather than stay in expensive hotel. Location is great, with it's own sandy beach and just around corner from main sandy beach also. Very good snorkelling at close by island which you can easily get there by Kayak. Supermarket just over the road. Jack and Francesca more than helpful- thank -yo...
Cheap places to stay in French Polynesia

Wonderful hosts, happy to include us in trips to the bank, grocery, etc. Great location next to the Hilton, but also with its own private beach. Our bungalow was large with full kitchen. Think beach house or summer cabin. Nice common room for relaxation. We enjoyed a trrrific meal, reasonably priced, made by Jean and his family. If you want luxury, go to the Hilton, ...

Nice place to stay, rooms a bit hot (no AC), great breakfast, friendly host, fully equipped kitchen, you can borrow complete snorkeling equipment for free. Public beach is close (600m), but we preferred Vaiava beach (great snorkeling), which is much nicer, but it's 1,2km walk under the Polynesian sun. 14km from the Airport, so no problem if you have a car, or else give...

If you can't afford an over water bungalow on Moorea, then this place will suffice if you don't mind simplicity. We wished we had booked more than two nights as we could just sit and look at the lagoon. The lagoon isn't great here so you'll need transportation to get around, taxis cost a fortune. The restaurant isn't great - but that's all over French Polynesia, unless...

We had a bungalow with very nice terrace with a beautiful lagoon view. The bungalow is simple (no TV but for us was a plus so kids went to see crab and fish instead watching TV!) and very clean. They are free bikes and kayak it is well located in the middle of the island. Olga was a great host taking us for groceries and gave us a tour of the island. This was the best...

We stayed in an Ocean breeze villa for 6 nights at Moana. The location was perfect, a 3 minute walk from Tiputa Pass where you can see dolphins every evening. The supermarket and restaurants were just another 5 minutes away. We received a 6 star service all the way from our airport pickup to drop off in helping us book tours to buying good quality pearls. Couldn't reco...

The lagoon at 5mins walk is a beauty for sure. Maybe one of the best on Huahine. Good for a few days stay (2/3nights). However staying here makes you isolated on Huahine. Tours and food on site are expensive with very limited options around. Clean and large rooms though.

When Tinua picked us up from the airport, I sensed that he was kind, friendly and informative. On the way to the pension, we passed through a short street where we could get everything we would need. This was the center, took 2 minute to drive through. The pension is about 10 minute walk to the center. When we went to ask Tinua about the island, he laid out a map an...

Thierry and Katia were great hosts and really made an effort to engage with us despite our lack of French or Tahitian! The fruit from their surrounding orchard was magnificent and there were plenty of amenities close by. The surf was a little large for novice longboarders such as us, but I'm sure seasoned surfers would love it and the break is super close. It's not a w...

Flora couldn't be more wonderful host. She picked us up, drove us to a scooter shop and sent us to the airport. Hotel was located next to the beach with 3 lovely decorated rooms. However, water shortage could happen from time to time on motu. We really had a good time.

Overall, the "Pension Les 3 Cascades" was a good choice for my stay in Raiatea. Patrice, the owner / manager, was extremely helpful in terms of arranging activities, making phone calls to his local contacts. Without him, I would never had been able to organise the bicycle tour or the day-trip on Motu. I highly appreciated him walking the extra mile. The property itsel...

We stayed two nights at this hotel in the centre of Tahiti. If you wish to experience the centre of Tahiti on your own, this is a fantastic place to stay. The rooms are basic, but clean and very quiet. Staff are enourmously hospitable and really care. We organised transfer with them by email - everything worked well and they picked us up in the centre of Papeete. The j...

I had such a wonderful time at Le Perle! I was traveling alone for the first two nights there and Roberto made sure I felt welcome. Rooms were very well decorated and new. Felt like you were in paradise (which you are in Taha'a). I would definitely recommend this hotel to everyone. Solo travelers, families, groups. I think anyone would enjoy it! There was lots to do ...

We stayed 4 nights with our two year old. He loved the rooftop pool and we enjoyed the sweeping views of Pape`ete. He also loved sitting out on the balcony for meals and we loved the shady, but private outdoor area too. Angelique and Michael were amazing hosts who were friendly and super helpful, both online via email and when we met them. They showed us to the apar...

One must really know that the place is very removed, wild and far from civilization. The Areke Chez Kayser pension offers absolutely everything; the facilities and organization of all details. You can't dream of better. It enables one to visit the tombs of Gaugin, and of Brel, the Gaugin museum and the Brel museum. The manager as well as the manageress, who form a wond...

Bungalow with amazing view on the bay. Great food for diner with beautiful view from the restaurant as well. Lovely hosts. Of note: food is not included. The breakfast is a bit too light. And be aware of the transfer from the airport not included either (3000CFP return)

I love meeting people who don't follow the typical tourist path. Here, I got to meet a French Polynesian family, yet had the privacy of my own room. The people who stay here are interesting and adventuresome. Claudine, the proprietor, is a lovely and wonderful hostess!

Great value for the money. This was the best accommodations we’ve had in a while. The villa is very nice, with its own private beach and private little pool. The garden is weary nicely designed and everything has been very thought through. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Tahiti. Location is far from Papeete so a rental car is highly recommended.

We choose the InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana Resort wanting an affordable overwater bungalow for our honeymoon. To start we thought the resort was quite expensive, however following a trip into Vaitape it became apparent that the resort was well priced in terms of food and activities. We experienced no language barrier with reception or the concierge, however in...

You have just arrived in French Polynesia after a long overnight flight and you want to experience the real Moorea...forget about all these big resorts that lack personality and go to Fenua Mata'i'oa instead. This little gem offers all you wish for and more: a lovely room surrounded by a really lush garden with lovely sea views for you to enjoy. Unlike large resorts it...

I stayed here for two nights and was very impressed. After reading other guests reviews, I was expecting it to be slightly run down but I found it to be modern and in good condition. The room was very spacious with a very large balcony looking right onto the beach and i had a great night sleep as the bed was very comfortable and it was very quiet apart from the sound o...

We loved the unique character of the villa - had a fun tropical feel to it with beautiful picturesque views of the pool and beach. As a family of five with older children there was ample room to spread out with plenty of seating, sun loungers etc. Kitchen was well equipped which made meal preparation easy. Having kayaks and free Wi-Fi was a plus. Great location to v...

Brilliant level of service from the time my husband and I arrived. We were greeted by Melissa who showed us the resort and our villa. Highly recommend going for over the water villa. Amazeballs. 2 things - I wish we had access to a little grocery store or something. Had to rely on resort for every bottle of water, every coke every sandwich and every (very expensive) drink. Also I think some fabric softener on the sheets would have been nice on our sunburnt bodies. But wow. Amazing. Paradise.

Our favourite hotel in Bora Bora!!! Very clean, very green territory. Amazing SPA. Two Steam Rooms (complimentary) one with beautiful view on Lagoon, the other with the view to the ocean. Service is very high level. Big and clean bungalows with direct access to the water. Breakfast is very rich. Main beach is beautiful. Simply the best...

We went to the St Regis as part of our honeymoon, and without doubt this is the best hotel we have ever stayed at. Everything was amazing, from the welcome tour to the nights spent sipping champagne in the overwater bungalow. The Food was great, but it was Carmen’s butler service that really made our stay super enjoyable, she was brilliant. It is very expensive, but i...

Beautiful overwater bungalows, friendly staff. Room layout was perfect and bed was very comfortable. Ice machines available. Tried dinner at their main restaurant and room service, both were good. Snorkeling equipment, kayaks, SUPs provided. Only downsides were extremely poor Wi-Fi (which seems to be the case for many resorts in French Polynesia per other travellers), ...

Beyond its stunning scenery, French Polynesia is rich in cultural heritage. The local traditions, music, and dance play an integral role in everyday life, offering visitors a glimpse into the islands' storied past. Festivals celebrating the Polynesian culture are held throughout the year, providing an immersive experience that highlights the unique customs and vibrant spirit of the islands.
When to Experience Paradise in French Polynesia
Timing your visit to French Polynesia can enhance your experience, as the islands enjoy a tropical climate year-round. The best time to visit is during the dry season, which typically runs from May to October. During these months, you can expect pleasant temperatures, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities like snorkeling, hiking, and lounging on the beach.
Peak tourist seasons coincide with the dry months, particularly around July and August, when families and travelers from various markets flock to the islands. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of April and November. These months often feature fewer crowds and more competitive pricing on accommodations and activities.
In addition to the weather, local events can also influence the best times to visit. Cultural festivals, such as the Heiva i Tahiti in July, showcase traditional music, dance, and sports, providing a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates Polynesian heritage. Planning your trip around these events can offer a unique insight into the local culture and create unforgettable memories.
Essential Travel Tips for French Polynesia Adventures
Traveling to French Polynesia requires some preparation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Understanding local customs is crucial; for instance, greeting locals with a friendly “Ia ora na” (hello) can go a long way in establishing rapport. The official currency is the French Pacific Franc (XPF), and while credit cards are widely accepted, it's wise to carry some cash for smaller purchases and local markets.
The primary language spoken is French, but many locals also speak Tahitian and English, especially in tourist areas. Familiarizing yourself with a few basic phrases can enhance your interactions and show respect for the local culture. Health precautions are also important; travelers should stay hydrated and apply sunscreen generously, as the sun can be particularly strong in the tropics.
Lastly, it's wise to consider travel insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances, such as medical emergencies or trip cancellations. Being prepared can help alleviate stress and allow you to focus on enjoying the beauty and adventure that French Polynesia has to offer.
