“We stayed one night and we wanted to extend out stay. The location is perfect, in the heart of colombo. The view of city, bere lake and the indian ocean is the best view i ever had. Its unbelievably luxurious and modern. Clean rooms with modern facilities. Roof top pool is amazing. Friendly staff and good food. Good value for money. Only problem we had was they charge you extra 5000 rupees from your credit card and they deduct the bills from that at d they re deposited it within 4-5 days. We were not aware of this. They have to stop this. But the hotel is one of the best hotels in sri lanka. Superb stay :)”

“prices for food and beverage were expensive considering sri lanka is quite cheap. food was always fresh although the menu could have been a bit more exciting if your staying there for a week or more. the rooms were cleaned daily to a good standard. bathrooms, were also good considering most hotels in sri lanka have a problems with ventilation.this hotel had no problems with that, the only thing i can say the laundry service was not good. the hotel needs a internet / business centre and a kids club then it would have all the ticks. it offered snorkingling and diving which made it easy to organise your day. i would definately return again.”

“I last stayed at this hotel when it was under another brand name. The refurbished rooms under the Ramada brand are excellent and very comfortable. The location near Galle Green is very good and with the new highway it is only 30 minutes from the airport. The check in as for most hotels did not ask for a credit card deposit. However when I put a bar account on my room number I was subsequently phoned and told I would receive services on a cash basis only. I felt like I was going to do a runner and I am honest and always pay my bills upon check out. I love the pork in Sri Lanka. At the breakfast buffet when I asked for pork bacon, the chef told me the hotel was a "Muslim hotel". A search of the Ramada website gives no indication that the hotel is Muslim or halal. So beware pork bacon lovers and book elsewhere.”

“Excellent hotel with friendly staff, extremely comfortable rooms and a great selection of bars and restaurants. I am a regular visitor to Sri Lanka as I have family in Colombo and have stayed in pretty much all of the "better" Colombo hotels at some point in the last couple of years. I would thoroughly recommend The Kingsbury - It is a very versatile hotel appropriate for various types of travellers. The rooms have a luxurious but homely feel, with seriously comfortable beds and pillows! A drink in the Sky bar is a must even if you aren't a resident. The breakfast choice and quality was pretty much the best I've experienced in Sri Lanka. I would also recommend the foyer coffee shop - A bit crowded at times but the cakes and chocs are lovely and well priced for the quality. Overall, an excellent hotel that I will most definitely be returning to!”

“The best hotel during our trip in Sri Lanka. Welcome cocktail, big room, big swimming pool, rich varity breadfast, menu a lacarte quality&price for dinner/supper, very good service with smile everywhere. The only inconvenient is the beach is not really owned by the hotel and when you get out there are local tourism people come to noisy you... there is a lagoon on the beach and very suitable for swimming, if outside with high wave it will be dangerous.”

“One of the pricier hotels in Colombo but well worth the extra $$ you pay. The deluxe room was neat and sufficiently spacious with a comfortable bed. The hotel even offers a nice choice of pillows which can be requested via room service. The inroom dining menu has a huge variety at decent prices. I've stayed in many hotels in Sri Lanka and the Cinnamon Grand was one of the best. Even though there are less costly options around the area this place is worth the extra money because the level of service and standards they maintain. Staff was friendly and attentive. Even the cleaners could speak decent English. It's a busy hotel in Colombo and is so for a reason. Only negative experience was we were told we can check in early even before 12pm. But after arriving at the hotel at around 1 - 1.30pm we were told that we have to wait for about 10 minutes till the room is fully cleaned and inspected because the hotel was on max capacity. This 10 minutes dragged on for about an hour of waiting. Luckily the hotel is connected to a shopping center where we spent most of that waiting time. And the staff seemed genuinely sorry for the delay. Overall I'd say its a great place to stay with your partner/family if you are after something special and willing to put in the extra $$.”

Becuase they provide a great level of service, FO Manager is one of the most Friendliest Staff I ever met from Sri Lanka. Several times I have requested for late check-out due to my work and business schedule, they never said no and always assisted if rooms are available. Special mention to Receptionist Bhanu, Bell Boys Angelo, Thalipa, and all other Bell Boys can't remember their names. “first some pro's ; A very nice way to end our round travel in Sri Lanka, it's located just on the main road... step out and walk around the street you will find plenty of interesting shops to shop some last things to take with you back home. And if possible, we also did it, request a room at sea-view side so you will not hear any traffic. Also, the bellboy (Rajindre) and the helper (Pathu), and the receptionist are very helpful and nice. Don't hesitate to ask some information, they will provide. A great tip we got from reception was to use Uber... it was more than 50% cheaper than taking two tuktuks everytime. The apartment is very nice and spacious, the pool is very clean (until people jump in with clothes on...) Some cons; - The reception guy already mentioned it, even though it's a non-smoking policy but some (arab) people still were smoking in lobby and are a bit loud and messy at breakfast. - The breakfast guy with curls is a bit rude and not well trained in hospitality...”

“The stay here was good. It was the second time I have stayed here and both times I was pleased. First of all, it is one of the few hotels in Sri Lanka that is appropriately priced. Most hotels in Sri Lanka are too much for the quality you receive, but the Calamander is actually a good price for the level of quality. Second, the staff is pretty good. Again, at most hotels in Sri Lanka, the service is well intended but just not up to par. At the Calamander, the staff is well trained and on the ball. “I used this hotel on the last 3 days of my adventure in Sri Lanka to unwind, relax as well as a place to be able to see the beautiful sights of Kandy. It’s located in an ideal situation overlooking the lake and within walking distance of the hustle bustle that is Kandy centre. Cinnamon Citadel Kandy

“We stayed at Cinnamon Citadel for four nights during the last four nights of the Esala Perahera in August 2014. The hotel is somewhat far from the city center and trying to get a three-wheeler was sometimes a challenge...... either into the city...... or back from the city day or night. Yet, reception could order a ride for you quite easily if you wanted to get help from the front desk. In the city, we found that when drivers learned that we were staying at this "star" hotel, three-wheeler rates would go way up in price.... and it was hard to barter a good price to get back to the hotel. Tourist rates, right? ;-) Situated on the river, the hotel setting is beautiful. The food was delicious yet sorry to report......we found the coffee terrible... very weak. Then again, Sri Lanka is famous for tea and not coffee ;-) The dining room staff were very friendly and efficient. The pool area is simple yet beautiful and was never overcrowded. Plenty of sun chairs for guests. From our travel budget....it was pricey to stay here, especially during the Perahera. Yet in our two weeks in Sri Lanka, it was our favourite hotel of them all. As expensive as we found it, we would indulge again and stay here should we ever return to Kandy.”

“I have stayed at this hotel many times. It is very nice and I have always enjoyed visiting this hotel. However, there appeared to be a change in marketing strategy with Chinese flags everywhere, signs in Chinese language and Chinese karaoke in the lobby. Before, you felt like you were in an upscale tropical jungle resort. Now, the environment was totally different. I was told this was temporary. I hope so as tourists visiting Sri Lanka want to feel like they are in Sri Lanka, not China - even tourists from China probably want to feel like they are visiting Sri Lanka. Besides for this issue, staff is wonderful, location is good and view of lake is very nice.”

“Hotel is good, food is OK. Coctails good. Enought sunbeds and towels. Drinking water they leave in the room or sell during meals is bad and taste like plastic. Newly renovated rooms are good, confortable. Best is the AC, because not blowing straight to the bed, that is common in Sri Lanka. Also thick blankets was super. Enjoied finally chilly night sleeps. Beach is bad, water brown and waves. Everybody was around the pools. Beach was empty. Good hotel for before or after flights but not for full vacation. Enjoyed full board. Fustrating was, that you had to pay for water during meals. Its not so expensive, but always problems to sighn the bills and water was not tasty. Be aware, that during check out they charge you also about the food, drinks that was not ordered. They do not give you any copy of the bills, so hard to keep everything on mind. If you are not into that, you better skip it! You are surrounded by nature and animal so it is very relaxing. It is located in the middle of the National Park so it was convenient to start a Safari from there (you can book at the hotel or anywhere else around it). The hotel gave a room free of charge to our driver - which is quite common in Sri Lanka - and a discount on the food. You are advised not to leave your room alone after 6pm to avoid encountering wild animals. The food.. International Buffet for dinner. Not great but good enough. It is the most expensive hotel we stayed at in Sri Lanka though. I believe it is because of Yala being one of the most popular tourist spots in the country.”

Grand is a British empire era hotel and certainly lives up to it’s name. The look and the feel are undoubtably majestic. The staff was extremely friendly and I would like to mention Sasanka and Duminda from the front office for their excellent customer service, Mr. Bala from the Bar for the friendly game of pool and his vivid explanation on the history of the location ( the three pool tables are more than 100 years old and the building is a part of the original governor’s bungalow from 1800’s!) and Chef Augustus for the wonderful birthday cake (It was my son’s birthday a few days back, and the cake was complementary). Gave us some great cooking tips too! Pool is smallish but really clean. We did a tour of Kandy with a guy the hotel has used for years. We saw some great sights and were left to decide what we did and didnt do. We even paid him twice the amount we should have by accident and he came back to give us the money. Unreal. “We stayed here for one night in a Deluxe Double Room. It was basic but had everything we needed - fan, mosquito net. The bathroom was very clean and the hot water worked well in the evening however did not work in the morning, not a big deal though. One thing we would have appreciated is a top-sheet between the bed and the blanket as I would assume the thick blankets are not washed after each guest. The power went off in the night which made the room very hot and resulted in a bit of an uncomfortable sleep but for only one night it was ok. The bed itself was actually one of the most comfortable I have had in Sri Lanka. The wifi was great, very strong (we were in 101). Our driver mentioned that restaurants in the area can charge you extra just because you are a tourist so advised we eat at the hotel. The dinner was delicious and very reasonably priced - breakfast was delicious also. As other reviewers have noted the hotel is literally opposite the mosque speaker. Would recommend!”

“My friend and I had the best stay in Sri Lanka here, "excellent" wouldn't begin to describe it. The rooms are very clean and the hosts super welcoming and helpful, always ready to attend to our needs and questions regarding travelling and sightseeing around the area. They were kind enough to help us arrange a tuk-tuk to Adam's Peak, and in the afternoon, when there is no tuk-tuk available to Devon and St Clairs Falls, the husband took us there with his van at tuk-tuk's price! The breakfast served here is absolutely scrumptious, and the lunch/dinner menu will be the best money you will spend in Sri Lanka (delicious and generous in portion). The curries here are excellent with the great views from the bedroom balcony. We spent two rather relaxing days here and it is definitely the highlight of our trip! I couldn't rate this place highly enough!”

“It’s a little off the beach, which was great for me. That meant I could walk through the streets with locals saying, “hi!” every couple of minutes and see more of the non-touristy side. I was non-social, but the couple who were also there sat and chatted with the family for a few hours every night. The family was very very nice, and the food was extremely tasty! I was introduced to some new Sri Lankan food, and I loved every bite. There was so much food I couldn’t even eat a fourth (and I tried, believe me). They don’t mention it (that I saw!!!) but there are fireflies/lightning bugs a 3-minute walk away in the field. It’s right at the beginning of the street to their place. It was magical discovering that while I was trying to look at the moon. Oh and agoda’s location is wrong. It’s one street over, and there’s a sign off the main road to help you get there. Anyway. Great deal. They even took me to the bus station and made sure I got on the correct bus to get to Ella. (Literally waited 10 minutes with me.) Just picture it: a cow wandering the yard as I walked out to go to the beach and a peacock visible the second I got out of my tuktuk upon arrival. Perfect. I highly recommend this rustic little cabin!”

However, there appeared to be a change in marketing strategy with Chinese flags everywhere, signs in Chinese language and Chinese karaoke in the lobby. Before, you felt like you were in an upscale tropical jungle resort. Now, the environment was totally different. I was told this was temporary.

The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and our stay was simply magical. The prices are very reasonable and the restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets so one can explore the various local and international dishes. We travel a lot and found this hotel and town to be one of our best surprises... Negombo is now in our "preferred" places list. We had been in Sri Lanka on business before and wanted to return for a holiday... We did it and plan to return. Sri Lanka is a jewel of a country with beautiful mountains, dense forests, and lots of wildlife. Now that the civil war is over, the government is taking good care of the national parks and have amazing elephant orphanages where one can observe elephants feeding and playing in the river--some were wounded during the war and have been rehabilitated. These orphanages take care of these handicapped animals. Some foundations offer elephant rides as well. Negombo is only about 14km from the airport. It's a stunning beach with charming fishing boats in bright colors dotting the coastline. The town caters to tourists, so there are dozens of little shops selling arts, crafts and jewelry. Spas are also very popular. One can get around easily by walking, on tuc-tucs or by hiring a car. If you want to give Sri Lanka a try, start with a stay at Negombo beach, and make sure you stay in Jetwing Blue Hotel.”

“I will eventually buy a house on the outskirts of Kandy in the hill country where it is even cooler, this is where I went to on this visit! I stayed in the Yala National Park at a fabulous hotel called the Yale Park Hotel. Absolutely amazing place with infinity pools outside all of the rooms. The rooms without exception were all massive and really well thought out. A Chinese guy called Wesley bought the place a few years ago and has invested a fortune in making the place awesome! There are even horses there as well as fish ponds and visits from the local monkeys, a white boar and a white buffalo. The views from every aspect of the hotel were awe-inspiring and memorising! So good to wake up and unpack the entrepreneurial stress with a long distance gaze into the far off mountains! Gods creation at its best and in full affect, you cannot help but to be moved by the view. I will look for an old colonial tea plantation house to renovate rather than a new build! I love the Sri Lankan colonial architecture as it is pretty much intact from the Victorian era from when it was built. Probably cost a small fortune but my philosophy and belief system will take care of the finances! I do believe that when you think of something, write it down, unpack it from though to words and then focus positive energy onto it, the subject matter in mind and on paper will begin to manifest itself into reality, you do have to feed the thought pattern with positive affirmations and a focused belief-energy – knowing it is already real and its only the time-line that has to be traveled to make the initial thought into absolute tangible reality. Please check out my Sri Lanka Blog post: http://www.brianroe.co.uk/sri-lanka/ for pictures of Yale Kandy Park.”

However when I put a bar account on my room number I was subsequently phoned and told I would receive services on a cash basis only. “we arrived at the hotel after a long sri lanka tour and we were so relaxed once we realized we arrived one of the treasury boxes of sri lanka. we were welcomed with a refreshing fresh juice drink that was lifesaving after our tiring way from kandy to the hotel. our room was very comfortable, clean with nice colonial design. we just simply loved it. it was great that the hotel offers free dvd for watching in case you decide to stay in. they also serve a buffet dinner for a very reasonable price with a great variety of food and their a la carte menu includes a wide selection of meals. the beach in this is really beautiful and quite long, it is perfect for walking or running. in case you would struggle with the transportation i advise to use the service of the hotel as they can arrange for you good drivers with good cars. the paid price is definitely worth it.”

Bar orders took sometimes up to 1 hour.”

“After traveling around Sri Lanka for 9 days, we returned to Colombo to stay for 1 weekend. Hotel location is great as it is in the business and hotel area of the city, not a far walk to Galle Face Green which is a nice strip of public lawn along the ocean front. The hotel is just across the Dutch Hospital commercial complex with shops, spas, restaurants and cafes. It is also a walking distance to Colombo main train station and bustling commercial market neighborhood. The hotel is quite quirky with an overall Scottish theme. Room very spacious and view of government buildings. Bathroom is spacious, modern and clean. Only one set back was the shower door that wouldn't close properly so had leaking water onto the dry area. Staff were attentive and accommodating. Our flight was late in the night on Sunday, so paid for another half day to enjoy a full warm sunny day in Colombo and to get cleaned up in the evening before airport. Also asked the hotel to arrange an airport taxi which worked out well. Great ending to our Sri Lanka trip. Will recommend this hotel to friends traveling to Colombo.”

“This hotel was the best way to end our trip. My boyfriend and I wanted somewhere to stay that was close to the airport near Colombo, but quiet and away from everything. And this was the perfect fit. The room was clean, with cable television, comfortable beds, small nice and clean bathroom. It was perfect. The hotel's breakfast had plenty of options, but the best thing over all was the service and staff. The were very polite, accomodating and Always willing to help especially the front desk manager Kumudu J. He was such a delight. We wished we could have stayed an extra day in Sri Lanka just to rest up and stay at this hotel. As far as transportation goes, we ended up taking a tuk tuk to the airport. We loved taking tuk tuks everywhere (when in Sri Lanka do as the Sri Lankans do) which took about 35 minutes to get to the airport and it wasn't expensive. We made friends with a tuk tuk driver and he Always gave us local prices. If you were to take a bus to the airport you would first have to take a tuk tuk to the major road and then catch your bus, or just hire a taxi-driver. The hotel is not on a main road it s tucked away from all the hustle and bustle, which was a dream for us. Colombo's city center is also about 20 minutes away by bus. The hotel is on the beach, but if I had to say something negative it would only be that you can't go in the sea. You can sun bath, etc, but the beaches waves were to rough, but thats pretty much how it is everywhere along that side of the coast. But please if you are staying in the Colombo area go there. It's a fantastic hotel!”

“Enjoyed our last night in Sri Lanka. After touring from Colombo, Sirigiya, Kandy, Galle and final destination Bentota. Our room boy Sugath was very thorough and made sure the room was clean and of a high standard. We had a riverview deluxe, so you could enjoy watching the water sports whilst relaxing on the balcony. Location couldn't be better. A quick boat trip across river and away from the hustler and bustle. We enjoyed the Mediterranean buffet dinner night. Price was 3000LKR per person, which I thought was reasonably priced. Everynight there is a different option, Sri Lankan, BBQ, Western, Asian etc.. There were 2 other restaurants for dinner as well, Thai or Al la carte. There are daily activities for everyone, if you want to participate. Didn't use the spa facilities, but the prices are higher than you would expect to pay in Australia or Indonesia. Pool area may seem overcrowded to some, but you'll expect that when it's so hot. Overall we would of loved to have stayed one more night”

“We spent 5 of our 7 days in Sri Lanka at this hotel and it was the best decision we made. The hotel was personally recommended by a colleague and we were not disappointed. The staff is friendly, rooms are clean, bathrooms are spacious. I really liked their breakfast, and the proximity to the beach and other restaurants in Unawatuna. The best part was the convenient and affordable deals we got through the hotel for all our nearby trips: Yala National Park, Whale watching in Mirissa, etc. The hotel provided the best rates (for an end-to-end package starting from a hotel pick-up to the final drop back to the hotel) as compared with the rates you would get directly from Yala or Whale watching tour operators! The only challenge we faced was in communicating with the staff at the hotel. Only a few of them understood and spoke in broken English, and there was probably just one guy who was fluent in the language. Their menu also seemed slightly limited, but with a range of options to eat nearby, it wasn't an issue at all.”

“We stayed two nights in this hotel during our tour in Sri Lanka. Our first impression of this hotel was great, clean, quiet setting with friendly smiley staff. The rooms are large, clean and well furnished with comfortablebeds and well equipped clean clean bathroom. Great choice of food. “Lal”, who managed the dining room is very helpful and accommodating. We were surprised by the dishes provided, when we asked for authentic Sri Lankan dishes. In house Chef, “Hiran”, is brilliant, produced excellent Sri Lankan dishes as well as Western dishes for us. His ‘battered cuttlefish rings’ were the best we tried, in the country. Must try “Gune’s’’ cocktails while you are there too. Also “Enoka” who runs the hotel Spa has magic fingers. All her treatments are wonderful and healing. This hotel brings you very positive vibes all over. Last but not least must congratulate young hotelier, “Hasini”, who is very dedicated and running the place very efficiently.”

“All hotels in Sri Lanka seem to be unreasonably expensive. I would therefore normally expect a room of the quality at Zylan to be about 2/3 of the price. But that being said, Sri Lanka is unreasonably expensive, so I can't really hold that against Zylan alone. The hotel is really well designed, has excellent staff and good service. The rooms are big, comfortable, with good beds and a desk if you need to work. The television has lots of international channels, and the wifi is the best and fastest I've experienced in Sri Lanka. The showers are also good, as is the room service. The food in general is good, if a little on the expensive side. The breakfast included in my room price was excellent. All in all, if you want to stay comfortably near the center of Colombo, Zylan is an excellent choice.”

“The nature of Sri Lanka is so beautiful. This hotel is located solitary in the nature with a magnificent view of Sigiriya. The entire hotel has been built to fit in with the nature and I must say I have not stayed in a hotel like Sigiriya before, it is quite unique. As the hotel lies in the nature expect to see monkey jumping around close to the pool and on the roofs, there will be monitor lizards crawling around and bird song everywhere. For me this was fantastic. I enjoy nature and get relaxed when being close to nature and for me this was a fantastic place. I loved to be able to sit outdoors and watch Sigiriya in the background while the monkeys were playing the trees not so far away. The food at the hotel is very good and the rooms are of good size as well. The staff is friendly, they smile at you and greet you all the time. Also, service is quick here, in the other hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka it took forever to get any service and you had to hunt the staff to get something done. At this hotel they responded every time within minutes to fix whatever problem we had and we never had to wait a long time for food. In summary, this hotel gives you a unique experience combined with good service and if you enjoy nature don't miss this hotel.”

“We stayed for a night in order to go up Sigiriya very early in the morning, which it was perfect for as literally around the corner. Also right next to a whole strip of restaurants which was very convenient. It's beautifully decorated in colonial style. We booked it as was much cheaper than some other hotels in the area but honestly don't know why as really was lovely! Having since traveled around Sri Lanka it was one of our favourites & really think it needs to increase its price for what you get. Staff also very friendly. Note: you need to book driver accommodation in advance though as can be fully booked. Only downside is shower didn't drain well at all, but think this is something that they are working on.”

“We stayed at the Calm Resort for 4 nights as part of a 3 week trip around Sri Lanka and chose this hotel as a place to relax from our other more active and adventurous places visited. The hotel is very nice and clean and right on the beach. We were upgraded to a garden villa room which I would recommend over the deluxe rooms due to the proximity to the pool and the restaurant. We had room 504 which was fantastic, very spacious, clean, great bathroom and doors that opened to a small verandah and the grassed area. We walked up and down the beach every day and dropped into the adjacent hotels to see what they were like. We were happy that we had chosen the Calm resort as the grounds and facilities seemed better or equal to its neighbours and the atmosphere at the Calm seemed better. Great pool area, gym and restaurant with live music every night. Food was excellent with a fantastic all you an eat buffet breakfast included. We considered eating at the other nearby hotels in our visits to them but the food always seemed better at ours so we ate there. A special thank you to Priya the Executive chef who looked after us when had a small problem with the cooking of our food on one night, however they resolved it to our satisfaction. Also to our room cleaner Pirathees and to the waiter Marley who both provided great service and attention to detail. The rooms were good value especially in comparison to what is being charged by the hotels on either side of the Calm. I would have given the hotel five stars for value except the drink prices are very high, and seem to be at all the hotels we visited in Kalkudah. I recommend the hotel bring the prices down in line with other major Sri Lanka hotels all alternatively bring your own. Also as a note if you organize your own driver to pick you up and take you to the next location we had a problem getting him into the hotel driveway. The hotel claimed it had to do with security but we were later told they wanted a 20% commiss”

“when my friend and I arrived, the staff told us there was no room available because agoda forgot to give them our booking confirmation, but they would pay for our stay at a different hotel, they said the hotel is as good as their hotel. We were skeptical about it, but before we said anything, they realised we needed two rooms instead of one (they thought my friend and I were a couple and only needed one room, but after double checking our agoda booking confirmation, they saw two rooms were booked), they suddenly changed their story and told us our two rooms will be ready shortly. We didn't know what was going on, but the rooms they gave us were good, so we let that go. Later we checked that another hotel on the internet, it looked terrible, old and dirty, lots of negative reviews. Other than that our stay was fine, the hotel itself is charming, very old english, rooms were comfortable, they even had quilt on the bed, most of the hotels we stayed in Sri Lanka had only sheets and blankets. We had to leave very early the next day to Hotton plains, the hotel prepared breakfast for us to bring to the trip, it was good.”

“We checked in much earlier than the schedule time but the reception was so courteous that our request was accepted. The welcome drink and the air conditioning made it very inviting. We settled in the room which was gorgeous and extremely clean. Ordered some food which took only 20 minutes for burgers and fries together with a rice dish and a drink. We spent time at the Sky Lounge ! Having a good look at the city lights and took our dinner at the restaurant. Food was extremely tasty and to international standard. We had some guests who too enjoyed the evening with us. Slept well in those comfortable beds. The toilets were absolutely modern and clean. The breakfast was equally very good. Will recommend this hotel to any tourist and day. Good to know that standard of hotels in Sri Lanka are now in par with Singapore.”
