Great place, close to everything in city”
This place was really nice! Most of the staff don't speak any English but just they're very helpful and kind. The ryokan itself was very clean and orderly, not many people there when I stayed which was nice and quiet. Definitely a great price too!

Reasonable price, cozy room. ”
Location is good, short 7-10 minute walk to the main street for dining and the Shinyu Pair chair lift give you access to Hikage Gondola station.

Awful facilities and extremely old/going senile staff do not make for a good stay. ”
I go to Nozawa onsen every year and have stayed in a lot of Ryokans throughout my years living in Japan. This was one of the worst ones I have experienced. The onsen style bath...they have one shower head/ faucet for the entire ryokan. That's right, if you want to take a bath/clean yourself, you'd better get in line. In addition, it has pretty bad water pressure so it takes a while to get the job done. The shower/bath is only open for 2 hours in the morning 7-9 and a few hours in the evening. I went snowboarding during the day, and needed to use their 'dry room' in the evening. Their dry room for your gear is a room with just one space heater. Everyone has to put there boots around the one heater. The turn this heater off in the evening, so if your gear doesn't get dry in the time before they shut off the heater, then the moisture in your boots freezes over night and you have a rough day of boarding the next day. Not much to stay about the staff, they are pushing 70's, so they're not too quick to help with things. If you don't have a Japanese speaker in your group, you're on your own. The staff goes to bed at 10;30-11pm, so they just leave the front door open if you want to go get a beer in town. One western style toilet and one squatter for each floor. No heated seat though (Pretty crazy for Nagano winter ryokan imo). The rooms are about the same size as most ryokans, so that was nice. The futons were old, but comfortable enough. You are supplied hot water in a thermos daily for tea and are given a matcha bags. The location itself is a bit far from the downtown area, but super good if you want to board/ski as it is about a 5 minute walk from the 2 man-lift that takes you up to the ski area. So my advice would be to book elsewhere if you can, but if there is nothing else available, it will do if you don't mind not showering and can speak Japanese.

Great place for the value ”
Great for the value paid. Good location. Less than 5 min walk to nearest chairlift to the mountains. Although we booked for shared bathroom but they have an onsen which is very good. Never once it was crowded. Lovely people providing great service.

Adequate ”
Pros: two min walk to the free chairlift that takes you up the mountain. Close to the older area of town and Onsens. Nice view from room. Cons: no breakfast (not many outside options). Wifi spotty. No English spoken. Hotel onsen in need of renovations

Great location, simple hotel. ”
Location, staff friendliness, traditional
Staff were extremely obliging - even organising a late takeaway dinner for us on our arrival. Rooms were basic- no bathroom but good heating and futons. The hotel showed a bit of wear. Pity there was no breakfast as there are no Cafes open before the lifts.

good stay”
location, inhouse onsen, friendly staff
First time for me to Japan- lack of English signage or familiarity with English language by locals made the trip to the snow a bit tricky at times. This place is right in the Nozawa village itself so it is quite convienient. I took the Nozawa Onsen Liner shuttle from Iiyama station straight to the middle of town, and it was a 5 min walk from the bus stop. Inhouse onsen was small but noone used it each time i came in. I only stayed one night because it was a short business trip, but would recommend this for its location. It is old, and basic, so 2-star rating is fair. It is clean so there is no complain for the price. Would recommend it for the budget traveller who wants good location.
