Home away from home in Dali”
We stayed for 2 weeks and absolutely loved every day at Five Elements in Dali. It is a quiet hostel with an eclectic common area (with billiards, a bar, etc.), a quaint garden courtyard, and an upstairs yoga room. The rooms are large and comfy. The staff cleaned our bathroom and emptied trash every single day (which is uncommon for hostels in China) and changed our sheets every 3-4 days. The TV has lots of free English and Chinese movies. The location is perfect - just outside the old town. Just FYI, Five Elements is right next door to Jade Emu. After eating dinner and seeing a room at Jade, we were glad we chose Five Elements. It is much quieter, less expensive, and we thought it had a better ambiance. Tips - Ask for a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor. We spent our first night in a basic room next to the courtyard and found it to be quite noisy and bright in the morning. We requested to change rooms and the staff happily obliged. Also, we found the rental bikes to be too small for us and not in good working condition. P.s. Don't leave without trying a Black Russian at the bar :)
Made perfect by incredible staff!”
Dali Five Elements ranks among the best hostels I've ever stayed at, and this comes from a frequent traveller/backpacker. It has a star in its staff, especially Amy, who singlehandedly registered my family of four, fielded all our questions on what to do with our time in Dali, booked the cable car to the Cangshan mountain for us AND made lunch for us -- all under extreme time pressure as we got in from Kunming around 1pm and wanted to take the 3pm cable car ride up. The wonderful service is topped by the good location of the hostel, just outside the old town. I'd recommend this place -- without any reservation --to anyone going to Dali.
Great stay in Dali in the best hostel with great staff ”
My stay at the Dali Five Elements Hostel was great. The room was clean and comfortable, the location of the hostel is excellent. A trip to the old town, the temple and the mountains is highly recommended. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the guests very pleasant. Especially Susan was a great help to me, she showed me special places with local food and gave me good advice. Thanks again Susan for that. I will definitely come back. Many thanks for everything, we will see each other again soon.
Worth to stay compared those in Dali Old town”
I enjoyed a lot staying in this hotel. First thing, if you dont have much time in Dali take their local tour to visit other interesting villages and Er Hai. The price is worth for value. Secondly, do enjoy their daily night programs. Lastly, to play with the dog (Jing Pao). If you search from the map you will realise that the hotel is outside the old town. Frankly speaking, I thought it would be very far from the atractions. In fact, the hotel is just opposite the tourist spots. The hotel is located at the west of old town, someway near to the 'Ren Ming' road. For the entire old town of Dali, the most happening areas are within the west and north areas of the "Ren Ming' road. Therefore, the hostel is stradegically stituated. You just need to accross the main road and reach at the cafe/pub street. The hotel is slightly difficult to find. Please do call the hotel to look for the landmark. If you take buses to Dali old town, be sure the last stop is at the north gate or south gate of Dali old town. Based on the internet research, My bus supporting should stop at the west gate but it in fact stopped at Hospital 66 which is on the north of the old town. It took me half and hour to walk on the stone road to reach the hotel. Sweat!!
Oustanding hospitality ”
Dali five is a great space for you to rest, cheer, make friends, and sharing of travel information. The staffs there are remarkable kind and friendly. Especially Mei, she sent me to TianlongBaBu with her electric bike and help me to buy the ropeway ticket to Ximatan. I deeply appreciated Mei effort to help her guest in every circumstances. Please stay with Dali five and you will experience what is Dali great passion in hospitality!!!
Friendly and helpful staffs, comfortable bed .”
We enjoy very much while staying in Dali Five Element Hotel. We exchange travel informations and experience among the travellers while chatting or enjoying breakfast in the hotel. Every body is so friendly and nice that make us feel like staying at home.
Great hostel, verry friendly staff and atmosphere!”
It was the second time for us. Two years ago we also booked this hostel and the previous positive experience had us book it again and we were not disappointed at all. Very friendly and service oriented staff, simple, but delicious and very fresh (organic) food. They actually changed the menu on our request and just went to the garden en prepared new things. We had a private room, with all facilities. Everything is very clean. The location, on the edge of Dali old town and close to the Dali old town bus station, makes going on local tours very easy. At all a very good choice and, also important for a Dutcman, not at all expensive (room, food, facilities).
One of the best hostels I have been to”
This is one of the best hostels I have been to. Nice rooms with Yunnan style decor. It's 5 minutes away from the incredibly busy streets of the city center in Dali, so to me, this is a perfect location as it's really quiet but you can get down to the action whenever you want to. The best thing from the hotel is the wonderful staff: young friendly girls who all speak English and will be very happy to give you advice, help you with future bookings (recommending hotels) or just chit chat with you. Every night there are group activities such as mahjong class or dumpling making class. Fun hotel, totally recommended.
I was happy to return at 5 Elements in Dali. The main reason to come back was nice atmosphere in the lobby every evening, hanging with guests from all over the world and great staff who were all very friendly and helpful, specially Susan who helped me with every request I had. From climbing the Cang mountain, swimming in the lake, booking train tickets, choosing best quality local products at honest price and trying delicious local cuisine. Thank you again! See you soon!!
Strategic location & friendly staff”
It was great to stay in Dali Five Elements Hostel. Strategic location, nice garden, good price and the most important is very nice staff, especially Susan. She speaks English very well. She's very friendly and helpfull to all guests. The only minus of this hostel is there is no sign to the hotel from the main road. I suggest the hostel management make a sign about the hostel in the main road in order to help the guests find the hostel easier.
Fantastic place, didn't want to leave!”
Despite it being tricky to find a taxi to take us here after getting off a bus from lijiang, our stay here was fantastic. The hostel has a pool table, good music, a nice bar and has a great laid back vibe-we spent a full day hanging around and recharging our batteries. The staff are so helpful and lovely-June spent lots of time chatting to us and so did the owner-she even invited my girlfriend and I to eat food with the staff and showed us all the rooms in the building. She was constantly online looking for new things to buy to improve the property and I guarantee she will make sure everything is satisfactory with your stay! Normally western food has been dodgy during my 2 month travels but the breakfast is amazing (I bought it every day) and the staff are very good at both western and Chinese food, although the Chinese food choice is more limited. The rooms are clean with high ceilings and there are free clothes washin facilities, bike hire etc. location is just outside city walls and the bus to Kunming departs from next door-very handy! Imported Beer and drinks are available and are well priced. There is a pool table, board games and lots of other things available. The hostel itself runs a lot of tours so everything you need is under the one roof. The bar is chilled but if you want to party there are plenty of places within walking distance. Finally, the price was unbelievable-if this hostel is available just take it, I have nothing negative to say. It caters for backpackers, couples looking for a nice room (some have tatami mats as the owner lived in Japan for years) and there were even older groups-it's the perfect mix of boutique hotel and hostel. Will definitely be back some day.
What I like? 1) Laundry 2) Garden View 3) The Dali Ancient Town is just across the street. 4) Wifi 5) Strong shower 6) Clean and comfortable 7) Affordable and reasonable price What I dislike? 1) Because the shower is strong, the bathroom is easily flooded. 2) When people smoke at the garden, your room is getting all the smell. They should restrict people from smoking there. 3) The food in this hotel is very expensive
amazing place. five star”
this is the first hostel in my china yunnan trip. and this hostel is really amazing and strongly recommended to everyone who will go Dali. the staff is friendly, even help me bookking for my train ticket, and the best thing is the cheap price.
Friendly Staff and Guests”
though dali old town itself didnt' impress me much, the hostel make my stay memorable where the staffs are friendly enough to share information and interact with me. Even voluntarily offered to help with foods delivery. Had awesome beer time with them. Would recommend.
The best hostel in Dali”
Friendly and helpful staff, funny guests and quiet location few passes from Dali Old Town and Cang mountain makes 5 Elements one of the best places to stay. Highly recommended!
Relaxing and ”
We stayed there for 2 nights and the staff is super friendly and helpful. Their English is good as well. They have a very nice chillax area where they have a projector, guitar, piano, bongos and a pool-table, although it has seen its best days. The food we got was from good to very good and our room was spotless and was done in a simplistic but stylish manner. If I ever go back to Dali, I will most def. come back to this place.
Budget option for an English speaker”
Staff speak English and can help you with booking transport. Only ¥90 for bus to Lijiang plus picking up taxi. Dorm room is ok, with private bathroom and amenities. No kitchen but they do serve food. If you take the bus line 8 from Dali city, get off at the old city’s east gate then walk towards the west gate.
Nice clean place to stay, highly recommend”
This is a shorting walking distance to Old Town Dali, it's a couple blocks away. Great price, quiet location and very clean. Ah mo (mispelled), the front desk clerk was great she went out of her way to assist us.
Our journey here was really nice, near the downtown of Dali Ancient City ! The only negative point is about the lack of heating in the room ... Otherwise, the staff is really helpful and nice, they gave us some good advices to travel around !
Value for money. Good location as in for attractions. And easy to reach. Next to bus stop and 3 minutes walk to dali Castle. Outside has mountain water.
