Misleading description and poor customer service”
Firstly, if you are hoping to stay in a castle, be aware that most of these rooms are not actually in the castle. They are in a modern hotel down the road from the castle. This was not made clear at all in the description and it was pretty disappointing for us because the main reason we chose this hotel was to experience staying in a castle. We booked a family room for 3 people on Agoda. However, when we checked in they had put us in a double room. We showed the hotel staff our booking confirmation email from Agoda which clearly stated that we had booked and paid for a family room. However, they claimed the confirmation email they received from Agoda only stated we had booked a double room. We then called Agoda customer service and they confirmed we had booked a family room and didn't know why the hotel was claiming otherwise. The hotel said the best they could do was a double room with a fold-out mattress for the third person. They did not have any family rooms left, and we could switch to two double rooms, but we would have to pay for the extra room. I don't know what went wrong but this is either a communication problem between the hotel and Agoda or a problem with their booking system. Either way, it was not our fault so we were disappointed that there were refusing to assist us or even to offer any form of compensation for the mix up. We called Agoda back and they offered to either move us to another hotel or give us a partial refund, which we accepted. And lastly, at about 8:00 in the morning while we were all getting ready, somebody unlocked our door and walked in to our room, said "oops, sorry!" and then walked back out. Needless to say, it is very unprofessional for hotel staff to enter hotel rooms like this. Overall, this was a disappointing experience, and very far below the high standard we experienced in other hotels in Scotland.

Excellent service, staff and great place to stay”
I was taking the parents for a short break to Scotland and booked one night at the hotel (my father does not travel well so was worried to book more) The staff were amazingly helpfully and provided excellent service both from the reception and restaurant (food gorgeous) and when I asked if we could book an additional night the did everything they could to help us. I can't recommend staying here enough, even with a private wedding we still received amazing service and I would love to go back

Enjoyable stay”

Generally good, only complaint was level of lighting in bedroom which despite asking reception to have lack of bulbs remedied, was not fixed during our stay. Food at wedding reception was of a very average standard, and our particular waiter was uncharacteristically unhelpful, in comparison to maitre'd was good. Ridiculous pantomime by MC with haggis totally irrelevant to wedding.

Mainly disappointing - but the food was good.”
Very nice conservatory restaurant
Our first disappointment was that the website photo showing the 'exterior' of the castle was misleading. The accommodation is not in the old castle building, but in a newer completely separate building. We understand that the castle is used for large functions. Our second disappointment was that we had virtually no sleep due to a constant background humming noise in the rooms in the part of the building we were in. I suspect that the noise was coming from roof-mounted air-handling units which were creating vibration via the external walls of the building. By 1.30am we couldn't stand it any longer & phoned reception. The duty staff member came to the room & agreed that we weren't imagining it. we were offered another room across the corridor without having to transfer our belongings, but it was almost as bad. We were on the 2nd floor, with another floor above us, so the noise wasn't coming directly through the roof. When I checked in the morning, the vibration noise could also be heard at both 1st & ground floor levels. Having spoken to the duty manager (& we had the usual response 'you're the first ones to complain') he said that he would get the maintenance engineer to check it out, & also agreed to waive the cost of our evening meal in recompense. To be honest, we would have preferred a good night's sleep & to have paid for the meal!

pool staff food
Our stay was fantastic we were there with my 5 year old grandson he wants to come back (-: the changing rooms at the pool are small and need a bit of work down - curtain rails - and rust not a good look in the pool the steam room door was still stiff !! and their was a bit of mould about the kick plate of the door next to the steam room too was rusty and the door needed a paint - but this did not put us off excellent place
