““Beautiful Setting, But Falls Short on Cleanliness and Service””

“Beautiful Setting, But Falls Short on Cleanliness and Service” We stayed at De Vere Latimer Estate while exploring wedding venues, drawn by its stunning setting and historic charm. The location and grounds are undeniably beautiful, but several aspects of our stay didn’t meet expectations. Check-in Experience Unfortunately, our stay didn’t start on the best note. On arrival, we had to get the attention of a staff member who seemed disinterested in welcoming us. After providing our booking details, we were left standing at the desk for 8–10 minutes while she worked on the computer without any communication, making the wait feel even longer. When she finally addressed us, the check-in process felt unnecessarily difficult. She questioned our booking, asking if we had reserved through Expedia, and when we clarified it was Agoda and showed proof of payment, she still asked whether the payment had gone through. Given that it was late and we had travelled a long way, we just wanted to check in smoothly. When we asked if there was an issue, she suggested we had misunderstood, only to later confirm that everything was fine—making the whole exchange feel unnecessary and unwelcoming. Room & Cleanliness (Room 416, West Wing) Our room, while spacious, had several maintenance and cleanliness issues. The bathroom showed signs of neglect, with grime around the shower screen and handrail, a missing section of mastic edging around the bath, and an out-of-order heated towel rail. The bath panel and bathroom door were also in need of repair. Elsewhere in the room, the desk furniture felt cheap and out of place in such a grand setting. More concerning was the thick layer of dust on top of the wardrobe, which may have contributed to sneezing throughout our stay. Given our positive experience at a De Vere property in the Cotswolds in 2024, we had expected a similar standard of upkeep. Breakfast Breakfast was a mixed experience. On the plus side, there were good vegan options, but the overall quality of the buffet wasn’t great. Some items appeared to have been cooked too early and left in serving vessels for too long, and the sausages were of noticeably poor quality. The 1838 Restaurant itself could have benefitted from more attention to detail when it came to cleanliness. We noticed cobwebs in the lighting and around the fire escape, as well as a thick layer of dust on the shutter blinds. Noise & Disturbances The West Wing, while full of character, suffered from very creaky floorboards, which made it easy to hear people in neighbouring rooms and walking down the corridor. While this is somewhat expected in a historic property, it did impact the experience. Swimming Pool The pool, though a nice facility to have, was dated and in need of some refurbishment, with a few missing tiles. Positives Despite these issues, there were some highlights. The bath was spacious, though the bathroom itself was quite cold. The bed was comfortable, and staff at breakfast and the gym reception were particularly friendly and welcoming. Final Thoughts Overall, while De Vere Latimer Estate has plenty of potential, there were too many small issues that added up to a disappointing experience. With better attention to cleanliness, maintenance, and guest experience, it could live up to the high standard expected from the De Vere brand. Happy to share pictures should management wish to enquire.

“Lovely hotel - BUT DONT BOOK WITH AGODA”

Hotel was lovely - staff went over and above to make us feel welcome and enjoy our stay. Shout out to Chris and Poppy + the amazing handyman who not only got us a child bed but got a toy to comfort my daughter. Facilities at 4* because the hot tub and steam room were out of action and I was keen to use those as part of my booking. I WOULD NOT recommend booking through Agoda. I booked a room for 2 adults and 1 child and they ONLY passed on that I needed a twin room and therefore was nowhere for my child to sleep. They also LIED about the hotel policy - apparently all children age 4-12 share beds with their parents... - and promised to call me but then didn't. Really bad experience with dishonest customer service. Book direct with the hotel for the best rate.

    Reviewed August 04, 2025

Dear Rebecca, Thank you for your kind review and for highlighting the efforts of our team; especially Chris, Poppy, and our handyman. We're so pleased they helped make your stay more comfortable, and we'll be sure to pass along your lovely feedback. We’re sorry to hear that some of our facilities, like the hot tub and steam room, were unavailable during your visit. We understand how disappointing that must have been, especially as you were looking forward to using them. We also appreciate your comments regarding your booking experience with Agoda. While we don’t have control over how third-party agents pass on guest details, your experience sounds frustrating, and we're genuinely sorry it impacted your arrival. “Great location”

We wanted to catch a show in London. We live in the Midlands so normally stay at Richmond but due to an England rugby game, prices in Richmond and the surrounding area were ridiculous. Then we found this place. In the middle of the countryside but also only five minutes from Amersham so was able to catch the train into central London in 40 minutes. Rooms are fine, if a little dated, but value for money is exceptional. Will be staying again in the future.

    “Lovely Hotel”

Although I was expecting the Superior Room we booked to be larger, it was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed, although a little compact. The little balcony with table and chairs was a nice touch and would have been used if it had been warmer. The pool was an ideal temperature and the steam room was very hot. I thought the gym was going to be an issue as there was only one cross trainer, 1 exercise bike, a couple of weight machines and 2 Treadmills. However, I was pleasantly surprised and managed a couple of hours in the gym before a swim and steam room. The pool is quite small. 1.2m. It was busy the first day, as it was Easter holidays, with a family of 6 taking over most of the pool. Ignoring the signs of no jumping, running and bombing. There isn't a life guard. The second day was better. Much better behaved children in the pool. 😂 Unfortunately the sauna was not working. They were waiting for a part. Breakfast was outstanding! I opted for the full English with blueberry juice. However there were also pastries and yoghurt and fruit were also on offer. So a good selection. Lovely old building with lots of original features and steeped in history. A beautiful church. Lovely grounds to walk in. We will definitely visit again. Was popular with families as only 20 minutes from Harry Potter Experience apparently.

“Nice enough but a bit tired and in need of attention ”

While we have attended several events here in the past, this was our first time actually staying the night at the hotel. We were checked in by a friendly girl named Freya. She first put us room 632 which is in a building quite far from the main hotel. It is a modern building, but not particularly welcoming or attractive. The building was unattended and open. There were no elevators to take us to the floor that we were on, and we passed a cat in its bed in the corner of the hall!? The room was extremely unimpressive and uninviting. It was very basic and small with a poor view. As a result, we called to move rooms and as there were many better rooms available, Freya kindly moved us to a room which was an offshoot of the main hotel. The room itself, 325, was an improvement. It was larger, brighter (with a pretty view of the countryside), with a small decked patio with a bistro set. However, the French doors that led to the patio did not lock (the lock was broken!), and as it was on the ground floor, we - naturally - didn’t feel safe. So we loved again! This time we were allocated room 319. It was the same style room as the last, but with a working lock. The bathrooms in these rooms are extremely small and narrow (I’m not a large person). There was a lot of water damage on the wooden frames, which surround the bathtub and door. Above the shower, there was a fresh patch of water damage on the ceiling presumably from the bathroom directly above ours. The shower itself was good (the pressure and the products). The restaurant: we had dinner there on our first night. It was inhospitably cold. Apparently, through the kitchen vents, there was cold air coming through, which was then being pumped out into the restaurant. It made for a very uncomfortable dining experience. The food was generally good. However, my steak was over cooked, and I had to send back my dessert - it was a sticky toffee cake that was completely dried out in the middle. The service was ok, if not a bit slow, and there were only a few covers. We ate breakfast both mornings at the restaurant. Again, still freezing cold! The chef behind the counter said that staff were very uncomfortable working there and they were all getting ill from the freezing working conditions. The breakfast buffet was tasty and plentiful. However, the restaurant is woefully dirty and has clearly not been cleaned in many months (see photos of the window shutters and floor). I brought this to the attention of the manager and she said that there were no excuses for it looking like that, and she apologised. We used the pool which was clean and had a pleasant temperature. Overall, it was a nice enough experience, but the place is a bit tired and knowing we were there to celebrate a special occasion they never did anything extra to acknowledge this.
