A stay in the desert”

The location, authentic goat hair tent, clean bathroom

We picked this camp as it was not as expensive as many of the other camps around Wahiba Sands. It was not really value for money like a lot of the accommodation in Oman. It was a bit disorganized with no clear instructions after arriving at the camp when some of us were given coffee, dates and fruit. We were under the impression we had our own separate bathroom but turned out we shared with another couple and although the bathroom was very clean the floor flooded from the drain when the basin tap was turned on. The sandunes were impressive and it was good to climb one to see the sunset and the stars were nice at night and the solitude after the generator had been turned off and the rowdy German group had gone to sleep. We had a 2wd and were told we could not drive into the desert although it would have been possible. They wanted to charge us OMR25 or $75 to take us by 4WD the 20kms to the camp and back. This was very excessive as a full tank of petrol costs $20. We luckily got a lift from a friendly couple with a 4WD and left our car at the office for the night. Dinner was fine given the facilities at the camp and breakfast was adequate.

Exactly what we were looking for in a Desert Camp”

Location, Hospitality, Cleanliness

Our family of 5 stayed one night and had a wonderful experience! The owner and staff were very hospitable. This camp doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles of some of the other Desert Camps - no pool, no dinner entertainment, etc. The beds are a bit hard but it is camping after all. The tents are cozy and the linens are clean and fresh smelling. The bathroom facilities are also very clean. The setting is beautiful up against some nice dunes. My kids had a ball climbing to the top and rolling down the dunes. The sunset was beautiful. The dinner was tasty and plentiful, and we enjoyed visiting with other guests from all over the world. After dinner there is a campfire and then the lights go out and you can enjoy a beautiful desert night under the stars. We were very satisfied with our time here.

Comfortable stay in evocative atmosphere”

I really liked to spend a day at Desert Retreat Camp. The camp is in fact in the desert and isolated from other settlements. The tents are spacious enough and are provided with a small lamp and a plug. However, the latter seemed not to work (bring a powerbank, if you can). The beds are comfortable, the open-roof bathroom is clean and actually practical. Overall, considering that it is a camp, the comfort level easily exceeded my expectations, but still not in a way as to jeopardize the atmosphere of isolation and rusticity that I expect from this kind of stay. The dinner buffet was satisfactory in quality, quantity and variety; breakfast is less impressive – however, you won't be left starving. In the afternoon, we also had a welcome snack with fruit and dates. An experience not to miss!

Amazing!!!”

Staff, Quiet Location, Scenery

The owner was incredibly warm and hospitable. We loved the location and it was much more eco friendly than the other camps with better pricing. They shut off the generators after dinner, so the desert experience was at its fullest. We slept under the stars and felt perfect silence. We loved everything about our stay and the service in particular was impeccable. Thoroughly recommend this spot!

Even the most reluctant became convinced”

My partner was reluctant to stay in the desert fearing that it might be hot and nothing to do there. It ended up being his favorite part of our trip. The location is beautiful with the driving instructions being: drive until the end of the paved road, continue to the end of the electricity poles and then drive another 11km through the desert. No worries, impossible to get lost because of the dunes and easy driving if you have a 4WD. The camp is very clean, the food delicious and the owner very kind and interesting to talk to. During the day, you can do a trip using your car or just stay in the comfortable sitting area to relax, which is what we did. It was the most peaceful day in a very long time :)

A great place to get in contact with the Desert”

phantastic location, nice staff; simple, but great food

We spent one night in the camp. At 15:00 we and the other guests of this day met with the owner at the gas station in Al Wasil, who guided us about 22 km to the camp site in the desert. Thanks God that I checked their website the day before, because otherwise I would not have found the place. I was not aware of this necessity when I did the reservation. The place is simple, but nice. The tents are charming and the "open sky washroom" next to the tents was clean. The staff was nice and the dinner was simple (BBQ, Salad etc.)but really excellent and very tasty. Grat Place to experinec the Desert !

Very special stay!”

It was amazing to spend a night in the dessert. We were doubting if we would do it but very glad we did. Also if we wouldn't take a more expansive option, but this was perfect. Beds were a little hard, but for one night this was no problem. There is a great dune beside the camp you can climb on and make beautiful pictures. We took our three and one year old and they loved all the sand. We did the sand bashing and camel ride and this was also defenitely worth the money! Food was delicious. The owner and staff were very friendly. At night it gets really cold so take warm clothes and if you have, a flash light would be handy to find the toilet at night.

Excellent night under the stars”

The camp is located out in the desert far enough to feel far away without needing to spend days getting there. The staff were extremely courteous, the food was good and you're free to do what you want in the desert. Climb hills for sunset, sleep under the stars or plan some activities with the camp.

Desert night”

Clean toilets, lounge dining area, location

Our family had a very nice stay at this desert retreat. The sand dunes and location are spectacular. Tents and beds are very comfortable. Food was plentiful but average. Local musical entertainment at the evening camp fire would have been appreciated. The camel ride short for the price. It was half the expected duration. A mere 15 min.

Lovely Night in Desert”

A wonderful night in the desert, where we were extremely well catered for. Wide selection of food, especially catering for the non-meat eaters, and the dune desert trip at sunset topped it all off. Only better signage to the meeting place would improve this, and a cooler waiting area if others arrive late to move out to camp.

unique experience”

You can stay in Bedouin tent. Tent has a bed and bug net around it, but still a bit scary. In my case, a small rat invaded, got into a bag, and ate our cookies. I mean, it was unique experience and I really enjoyed those kind of things. If you want to feel raw on Wahiba desert, I believe that here's the stay. And food was really delicious. I've never informed that I have to pay extra 25OMR for taking us to hotel and way back with 4WD car. It is big money and I want to let you guys know.

Authentic desert camping with great facilities ”

Ahmed greatest us at his office at the Al Maha petrol station and we followed him to his rented camp. We were treated with a welcome drink and refreshments and we chatted. He has excellent English. We arranged camel rides and dune bashing for the next morning. Evening dinner was good and so was breakfast. Basic but sufficient. There were two tents for relaxing and a nice camp fire to sit around after dinner where chatted with other guests.

EXCELLENT LOCATION AND GREAT DUNE BASHING”

LOCATION, THE HOST AND DUNE BASHING

My family loved this place. It is not super comfortable - it is a tent in the desert with good toilets and food. But what a location! The Omani host was informative and eloquent. Dune bashing is expensive but worth every Rial - as we watched the sunset on top of one of the dunes. My family loved the camel riding - not for me! More coffee is only complaint - I would definitely go back. Not recommended for more than a night or perhaps two.

Nice camp with good food”

This camp is not too far from Al-wasil near a sand dune. The food is really good. Tents are ok with real beds and mosquito nets. Bathroom with shower with a view on the sky. But don't expect to see, meet or discuss with bedouins, the camp is entirely operated by Indian expats. We asked for a camel tour but the person with the camels never came. Transport to the camp is really expensive at 25 omr since it's not far in the desert.

Nice to be away from the city and e-mail”

Massive sand dune to climb up right by the camp. Things to do like 4x4 dune bashing and camel riding. No WiFi, what a blessing! If you have a saloon car the trip in the 4x4 is OMR10. We were there between Christmas and New Year and felt it was pricey but that is normal for that time of year I guess. The fencing around the compound could be made smarter and they’re missing a trick by not using solar panels. Toilets are shared. There are showers too, plenty enough for everyone. The lighting is dim but the moon made up for it. A nice getaway.

Your typical bedouin experience, though pricey!”

sand dunes, individual bathrooms, campfire

We arrived using the transfer service and were welcomed with Arabic coffee and treats. Tents were roomy and bedding was warm. Loved that drain water is collect to water trees. Breakfast was quite limited as were dinner choices. Can't believe they charged us US$13/5OR per person to use their plastic sleds which didn't really work on the sand dune. Not what we were expecting for that experience. Staff was very friendly, but best part is travelers you meet in a place like this. All the places like this in Oman are seriously overpriced though.

We met with someone from the camp at the gas station to join the camp as suggested. They say to be there before 2.30pm but actually we left the station at almost 4pm, a bit long with young kids! The way to the camp is quite easy and fast. The camp was nice, especially at night when you can see all the stars, diner and breakfast were good.
