Dong-daemun takes its name from the old eastern gate of the city, which still stands nearby and remains a popular attraction. Also known as Tongdaemun, the area’s huge market is famous for its tens of thousands of small shops. In total, the market has 26 shopping malls situated over 10 city blocks. Today, the city’s former soccer stadium has operates as an enormous, covered flea market.
Almost every product imaginable is for sale in Dong-daemun, from silks to electronics and house pets. While fashion and textiles dominate the markets, there are also a large number of massage shops, Korean restaurants and a 10-screen multiplex cinema.
Located in Seoul’s central district of Jongno-gu, Dong-daemun was traditionally a night market, but today is generally open for 18½ hours a day (from 10:30am to 5:00am) although some stores remain open 24 hours a day. Hotels in the Jongno-gu district are within easy walking distance of the market, and make a great base from which to shop-and-drop.
