Dougoya maintains combination of the Guesthouse and Ryokan style accommodation with its farming life also maintain the balance between human and environment. The best place to stay, ever.”
One of my favorite aspects of this trip was how Dougoya staff were so friendly and accommodating. I can't express enough that my stay in Matsuyama was beyond perfect, and mostly because this Ryokan made it so. You're in close proximity to all the Onsens in town, shopping district and great local food, plus all the temples and historical sites that are a close walk or bus ride away. The Ryokan itself had the most comfortable futon's I've ever slept on and the shared amenities made it feel like a home away from home. Everywhere I went was at the suggestion of Dougoya's staff and each recommendation went beyond my expectations! You must stay here during your trip to Matsuyama; I promise you won't regret it ;)
Wonderful little ryokan”
We highly recommend staying at this ryokan. We loved the look and feel of this traditional hotel. The friendly staff helped us with everything we asked about. The tatami floor room was plenty large for our family of 3 with closet spaces and entry rooms. The basic breakfast was delicious and if you want something different-a convenience store is just a few blocks away. Dogo onsen and arcade shops are within walking distance. Matsuyama castle plus other shrines and temples are just a short tram or bus ride from this location. Simple and easy to get around, see the sites, and enjoy a vacation!
Gorgeous larget traditional Japanese inn room”
The inn is a little hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for - it's very close to the Dogo Onsen but up a back street and signed only in Japanese. Once we knew what we were looking for it was easy to spot, though. The inn is very small and calm compared to a lot of the large hotels in the area. A traditional Japanese inn, our room (we stayed as a couple) included roll-out futon beds, a gorgeous wooden stand/shelf unit, a connecting room with an ornate wooden low table and seats, a side area with wood flooring rather than tatami mats where we could leave our bags & four electrical outlets, a third small room off the end with a bench and screen windows, and a vestibule leading to the garden outside. A free breakfast was provided, once again Japanese style, which included rice, two varieties of seaweed, miso soup with tofu, and green tea. We had an amazing time at the inn, the staff who checked us in and out were friendly and extremely helpful and both spoke enough English so that we didn't have to muddle through in basic Japanese. The only issue we found with the hotel is that since the walls are thinner than modern/western buildings, we could hear the other guests carrousing in the common areas until late at night despite the hotel policy for guests to speak quietly after midnight. Between the two of us one is a light sleeper and the other is not - the noise did keep me awake. We weren't able to use the hotel's baths since we only stayed one night and spent most of our time exploring the city, but a hotel employee told us that they're the only hotel in the area that, like Dogo Onsen, does not add extra chemicals to their water, which comes from the same local hot spring that the famous Dogo Onsen draws from. We did visit Dogo Onsen twice, which was a fantastic experience and I recommend it to anyone visiting Matsuyama - as long as you read up on onsen etiquette beforehand, you'll be fine. They provide English pamphlets explaining things as well.
Great experience in a friendly environment”
We spent 4 nights in Dougoya and we were astonished about the friendliness of the staff. All English-speaking, we loved discuss about Japanese culture. They did everything to let us be comfortable. Even though there is no private toilet, there is no problem on using the shared facilities. Absolutely the best ryokan of our honeymoon!
Nice traditional Japanese ryokan! ”
Highly recommend! I stayed in one of the private rooms and it was much bigger than I expected. Clean room and clean sheet. The hotel is located near the Dougo Hot Spring station, with just around 10 mins walking distance. The staff are communicable in English and really friendly. If you're going to Matsuyama and want to spend a night at a warm, cozy place, this is it.
Very friendly staff”
Staff is super friendly and helpful, you dont even need to worry about language as they speak English very well. Suitable for everyone, a traditional Japanese style accommodation, located at Dogo Onsen area, 30min tram to Matsuyama JR. Japanese breakfast provided. Will recommend to people travelling to Dogo who want Japanese traditional accommodation.
Top quality experience, unbeatable for the price”
This was the most pleasant time I've had staying in a place in this price range. It's an old, historic building (due to building codes, the only one in the area) that's seriously a three-minute walk from historic Dogo onsen (the model for the bathhouse in Miyazaki's animated 'Spirited Away." Both staff members I met were incredibly helpful with helping me plan my itinerary, and spoke impeccable English. I stayed two nights and the first night I went to Dogo, but the second I spent out so much that when I got back I just wanted to use the bath they had there, which is small but the same water, and was great. I met a monk there who had walked the Shikoku pilgrimage trail 60 times around. Crazy. He told some crazy stories as we sat in the common room drinking beers. He's friends with the owner as well--they met on the ohenro road. Breakfast is minimal--miso soup and rice, with a choice of pickles or konbu (seaweed) to put over the rice. Restaurants options in the area are a bit limited, mostly because people staying in the fancier area hotels will get (and pay a mighty sum for) a big dinner served in their rooms. The second night I was there some people were a bit loud in a room down the hall, and since this is a traditional Japanese place, sound carried a bit. But I'm a light sleeper, and I was staying in the shared room. What else? Lockers for your stuff, fast internet, either by wifi or using the one PC they have in the public room. This place is a great deal; can't recommend it enough.
Great value with friendly staff”
I have stayed in a lot of dorms since I've been living in Japan and I have to say this is by far the best. We went for the dorm rooms, and were provided with comfortable futons to sleep on the tatami floors. If you've never done this before, don't worry - it's very comfortable! From the start to the finish of our stay, the staff were EXTREMELY helpful and polite. They also speak fluent English. A standard breakfast of rice, miso soup, coffee/green tea, and pickled plum was provided and you could help yourself to more as you wished. It was a very welcome addition to what was already a good bargain. Navigating my way around the Ryokan area in my big car (legacy wagon) was pretty difficult at time, but manageable if you are sensible. I was provided with 20 hours free parking tickets for the coin parking nearby - be sure to check with the staff on check-in to make sure you park in the right place - without these tickets, parking would have cost us several thousand yen!
Lovely friendly historic guesthouse ”
I had a great stay here, one of the only older style ryokan near the dogo onsen. Private room was very nice. Very friendly and helpful staff :)
Absolutely a must to stay at in if one was to visit the Dogo Onsen area. Traditional ryokan but well-equipped. Location was great. The room we had was a private room with ample space. Would definitely recommend. My only regret was that we only stayed one night.
Managed to get a good deal from Agoda for a huge room. The host was very friendly and helpful, the breakfast was traditional japanese breakfast, felt like home! It was such an enjoyable stay in a traditional japanese house. It's also within walking distance to the famous onset place down the road. Will definitely visit again.
Absolutely great place to stay.”
The rooms were perfect size with great atmosphere. The common guest area room was superbly set up with good conversation areas. There is a great kitchen and cooking facilities and comfortable public baths. However the best aspect of this hotel is the staff. Their english is fantastic and they bent over backwards to assist us in every way. Access to the area's main attraction Dogo Onsen is within 5 minutes walk as are the major dining areas and shops. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel to any guests from english speaking backgrounds.
warm and comfortable stay”
very kind host who really care our stay in the place, very clean and nice room. breakfast taste a lot better than i expected from photo. very close to dogo onsen area. highly recommended
Special jewel of a house”
Very relaxing traditional Japanese house with several large traditional rooms. Facilities include a tea room, a 2-person onsen as well as a group kitchen and common bathrooms and showers. The simple breakfast of rice, pickle and soup was also provided. This really is a rustic little jewel hidden between bigger and more modern hotels. Also, the manager was extremely friendly and helpful!
Spacious room. Nice common area. Limited facility.”
Stayed in a private room which was spacious and clean. Superb common area. Great English speaking staffs. However, there are few points that I'd like to share: 1. Unlike other ryokans I stayed in before, we needed to make your own bed. 2. Public bath tub (no bigger that 1.5*2.0 meter) is only available in the evening (16:00-22:00). In the morning, only two shower boxes of 1*1 meter are available. Note that no towel and amenities are available which I found unacceptable for the price we paid (15,000 yen/night). 3. Breakfast is a bowl of white rice topped with dry seaweed and japanese plum pickle and miso soup. Note that you need to wash the bowl after use. 4. Although our room was on second floor with all windows closed, it was noisy as people kept chatting till late at night (They were not shouting but we could overhear all conversations clearly). I would say it's a great value if you stay in the dormitory but will not advice a private room (considering price/value aspect).
A great place”
The two young staff were very helpful and spoke good English. The breakfast was disappointing. There was nothing that I wanted to eat so ended up just having a coffee and went out for breakfast instead. I thought for the price it would have been better and wasn't expecting to have to wash our own dishes. This is NOT a backpackers. The location was excellent and very close to the famous Onsen.
Would need to ask for directions to the place - at Dogo Tram Station, walk the shopping street all the way to the end, turn left and follow the road, its behind DogoKan. Nestled between tall buildings - looking perfectly adorable. Friendly staff who guided on the things to note while staying at ryokan. Need to make own futon and wash own plates after eating - feels a little like hostel plus shower facilities are shared. Nice for a ryokan experience. Chevk in time is a little late at 4pm, check out at 10am
