For starters, it is built in Coromandel, where gold was first discovered in New Zealand 150 years ago. Here, guests will enjoy a combination of colorful themes with the contemporary design of the accommodation. Guests can take in the lovely breakfast right in their own private garden and listen to the chirping of some of the native birds. At night, guests can chill under the starlit sky in a Japanese hot tub. For some of the attractions, guests can drive to the popular Driving Creek Railway. My husband and I recently stayed at Driving Creek Villas for the last 2 nights of a 2 week holiday in the North Island. The owner David was away so we were welcomed by his friend and neighbour Pete who was friendly and helpful. We stayed in Tokatea Villa which sits beautifully in the landscape. From the carpark right next to the entrance to the walled (tree fern trunks) garden it's just a few steps to the front deck and into the villa. Open the bifold doors and you have an indoor/outdoor room and a lovely feeling of spaciousness. There's a hot tub at one end of the deck and 2 comfortable recliners at the other plus a timber outdoor table setting in the courtyard. Quiet, private and relaxing. The villa's very clean and well equipped and included some thoughtful extras including a very nice bottle of New Zealand wine and some breakfast treats. We appreciated the good quality wine glasses and the excellent kitchen and laundry facilities. Everything about the villa is tasteful and well maintained. We admired the prints by a local artist and the other decorator touches which added to the villa's appeal. It's just a short drive into town. We took the scenic route along the coast from Whitianga where we stayed a couple of nights to Coromandel Town and then drove to Auckland airport via Miranda (hot springs) with a stop at Clevedon for lunch which worked well.
