Dudley Guest House
Was the perfect place to wind down after awesome elephant safari. Great English and nice family run”
Garden setting was beautiful creating a great ambiance. Great in house professional chef Dudley, great food!
You feel at home...”
If you want a quite place in a natural environment with kind hospitality of its owner Dudley, don't look beyond this guest house in Habarana. Located in a small Mutu Village; 10 minutes short walk from the bus stand on the main road and 15 minutes walk from the Habarana Market where there are several eating joints and a super market. This is the best place to make your base to cover Sigiriya, Polonaruwa and Anurudhpura. I stayed with my wife and fully enjoyed the property. Its owner Dudley goes out of way to make your comfortable and meet your requirement and provides all the information for your travel and sightseeing. He arranged food for us at odd hours on a very short notice. Thank you for that. Recommended if you want quieter place and nature. Few suggestions: Provide small electric cattle and sufficient glasses/cups in each room for enjoying tea/coffee while it is raining outside.
Very nice a clean guesthouse, only 10 minutes from a bus station. Dudley and all his family are very nice, give you many advices, manage tuk tuk or safari for you and if you're lucky, you can experience here real Sri Lanka dinner or BBQ. If you will stay in Habarana, this is definitely place, where you want to stay :-)
Pleasant garden guesthouse central to all things cultural”
Perfect location to explore the cultural triangle. The rooms are spacious, clean, have AC and fan, and each room has a veranda overlooking the lusciously green garden. Dudley and his family do their best to make your stay enjoyable by either helping you arrange everything you would like to see/do in the area, or just let you be in case you want to go out and explore by yourself. He even asked the next day if our pillows were fine! :-) Yes, the bathroom stays a bit damp but given the humidity that's not uncommon. Breakfast mostly consists of sugary cakes with tea/coffee, if that is not to your liking visit Prasanna cafe close by on the main road. They tend to organise dinners most nights, ranging from Sri Lankan to western food. Oh and check out their giant squirrels!
Great accomodation with awesome food and very friendly family”
Just didn’t hit the spot for us”
Overall disappointed with our stay here and to us reviews seem overly generous , probably because Dudley and family are pleasant folks. Perhaps we went a bit too low cost after having stayed in a 5 star place in Colombo(as a treat) , although we have often stayed at similar lower price small places that we have really enjoyed. Just found, worse of all, our room felt damp, shiny tiles everywhere, total colour mish mash(are shown in photos to be fair but reality felt dated in real life) , uncomfortable pillow, bed pushed up against wall meant I had to climb to bottom to get out, nothing to dry out slippery bathroom tiles and so bathroom never dried out fully, just a sheet on bed, squeaky, cheap door to bathroom room with handle only just working and no bug net on window, dribble of a shower (was warm, admittedly)....... sounds petty as I write but just not our cup of tea and really surprised at it standard, based on its other reviews. Also the food situation seems random, so I don’t think you can count on it definitely being available, which seems to be a selling point. We did get it one night out of 2, and it was good and fairly priced, to be fair. But 2nd night he was taking family out so no food available and another guest said they hadn’t been able to get a meal also. Worked out well though as I can now recommend Cinnamon lodge buffet 1K away! Amazing!
Great time in Dudley's Guesthouse!”
We spent three days in Dudleys Guesthouse and had a fantastic time. Dudley and his family welcome their guests warmly and help wherever they can. The breakfast and dinner (for example seafood BBQ) are very fresh and taste great. Rooms are absolutely clean and the AC works well! Even though there's much space in the rooms. Habarana is a good place to explore Sri Lanka's cultural triangle, for which the family has always best advices.
Great stay in the middle of the cultural triangle”
Really nice accomodation in a good location to explore the area. Rooms were clean, staff was helpful and the garden is beautiful.
Nice quiet location, good value, excellent food ”
Very pleased with our stay. Nice room, lovely evening meals taken outside shared with the other interesting guests. Hosts is very helpful. Nice quiet location with easy walk to lake (did birdwatching there and in the local lanes).
recommend guest house. ”
Habarana is the ideal location to visit places such as Sigiriya [2 buses $1.00] + Polonnaruwa [1 bus $1.00] as well as Dambulla cave temples [1 bus $0.70]. Dudley guest house is very accommodating, very helpful and family friendly atmosphere. Clean rooms, great dinners [breakfast is a major carb sugar hit ] nice gardens. Definitely recommend staying here .
Great place! Many things to see!”
The place looks remote but is in between many great thing you can visit. Dudley easily arranges trips and offers fair prices to for example Kaudulla park (we've seen over 150 wild elephants together!!). The place is very cosy and Dudley and his family are very good hosts. Breakfast is good but the dinners are exceptional. One night we had a great BBQ with all the guests and the second night many different curries which were very good. This dining together with the other guests is definitely a highlight. The rooms are all what you can ask for with fan and AC only some rooms have mosquito nets. Nothing wrong with the rooms and good Wi-Fi coverage all around. I recommend it!
Lovely place with friendly and helpfull ownership serving delicious meals”
Great place a little bit away drom the busy centre. Nice and clean rooms within a green and quiet environment. Both breakfast and dinner were great, 20 curries in the evening and a lot of breadspecialities in the morning. Really recommend to stay here!
Really great place. Very helpful in getting around and visiting wherever you want. Food is also amazing. No complaints.
Me and my girlfriend recently stayed at Dudley Guest House while visiting the various sights of the Cultural Triangle area. We had a lovely time and found Dudley and his family to be very friendly and welcoming. On arrival, it turned out our room had been double booked for the first night. Dudley was very apologetic and had already arranged for alternative accommodation and provided transport to drop us off there and collect us in the morning. The rooms at Dudley Guest House were very clean and had a nice area outside to sit in the evenings. We ate our dinner at Dudley's for 3 of our 4 nights and the food was great. Twice we had a BBQ and once we had a huge range of curries, made from all the different vegetables grown in Sri Lanka. The food was served on a big table outside, where we ate with the other guests. This created a really nice atmosphere and we got to meet and chat to other travellers, which made our stay at Dudley's one of the best we had in Sri Lanka. Dudley also organised for a driver to Sigiriya and Dambulla, gave us information on the bus to Pollonaruwa, and booked a safari a Kaudulla park for us. We would definitely recommend Dudley Guest House to anyone looking for a place to stay in the Cultural Triangle!
The family really make this place special. They are such a lovely family and are all willing and go above and beyond to help. You MUST have dinner at least once at this place!!!! FANTASTIC FOOD. The rooms are aircon and pretty standard for what you expect in sri lanka.
Clean, comfortable and fantastic hospitality.”
We booked for 2 nights and ended staying for 3! The food cooked at the guest house was by far the best we have had in Sri Lanka. A great way to end our trip. Relaxed and welcoming vibe, we spent the evenings chatting and playing cards. We arrived and were greeted with fruit juice and then straight off to Minneriya National park, all arranged by the hostel. The family are all wonderful and very attentive to your needs. The rooms are clean, good size, lovely bathrooms. We would both come back here in a flash! Sad to leave.
Our worst stay during the trip to Sri Lanka”
We arrived at 5pm and nobody was expecting us. The room was fine. But there was no mosquito net. The room smelled some air freshener so badly that we had to let air in for the whole evening. It kept smelling anyway and sleep was unpleasant. The owners also overused the linen freshener during the wash so it also smelled too much. So those who may have allergies beware. The neighborhood is quite remote and labyrinth like so you better avoid strolling there in the night. I should acknowledge that the owners tried to be very kind and polite. But he seems very inexperienced in B&B and does not quite understand neither standards nor customers' expectations. Wi-fi did not work. After asking why, they proposed to reset the connection but it did not help. There was no hot water thought it is advertised and even it is clearly stated on the board placed in front of their house. Important thing. Do not believe reviews saying that the owner is ex 5 star chef from some great hotel chains or whatever. We believed it and went for the dinner to his local restaurant (you cannot eat at the guest house, the restaurant is in the city). We were on a safe side and ordered the vegetable curry. It was the worst curry we tried in Sri Lanka. The rice was cold and clotted, all curry bowls were also cold. Probably all left from yesterday. Anyway we tried and it was not tasty. Also beware that the restaurant is next to the very busy and smelly road as well as next to the petrol station. So the smell there was awful. We could not believe how a professional chef should not respect himself and customers to provide such a food and service. He better did not tell about his expertise and professionalism in cooking. We booked 3 nights but stayed only one. We left the next morning hoping to find a better place. Unfortunately, the policy did not allow any refund. Very disappointing stay. We traveled Sri Lanka by car and stayed in many places. This one was one of the worst.
