Fantastic place to stay”

East Indies Mansion is a very special place. The house it’s full of historical memories and beautifully restored. We are staying in Clove room 1 which is very spacious and full of character. The location is excellent close to all waterfront, street art, amazing restaurants and historical sites. The hotel is very clean and has an excellent breakfast. The staff are amongst the best I have ever experienced with our many travels throughout Asia. I would like to make special mention for the amazing friendly and helpful service of Sandra she is so helpful, kind and knowledgable explaining many details of the facilities, traditions and history of Penang and Georgetown. I can’t thank her enough for her service. All the other staff have also been excellent and helpful. I would recommend East Indies Mansion to everyone visiting Georgetown who would like to experience an amazing part of Malaysian tradition.

Unrivalled service, location and charm”

The staff, the location and the atmosphere

I booked at East Indies Mansion hoping for the charm of a traditional Penang-Chinese merchant house. What I got was that and oh so much more. Nestled right in the middle of Little India you are literally on the doorstep of the best Georgetown has to offer. Just around the corner from the ferry and bus quays you can easily get around the island, if the delights of the old town are not enough. The house itself is immaculate, right down to the fresh cucumber water and delicious iced tea the wondrous Jess and Rajid serve you on arrival. The rooms are large and refreshing, with stunning original features but with all the necessary mod cons (including the all-important air conditioner). With gorgeous lounge chairs and an open communal kitchen out the back, you can really enjoy this heritage building at all times of day. They also offer great massage and laundry services for the weary traveller! However the best part of this hotel, hands-down, no contest, were the amazing staff. Jess was a constant source of information, as well as a consistently bright and positive welcome home. Anything you needed, any question you needed answered, Jess was there with a warm smile, usually with something you didn't even know you needed, like a cool drink! If you are really lucky he might even give you a song off his guitar! I would 100% stay here again, and would recommend to stay nowhere but East Indies. I can't even stress, or put accurately into words how we were enraptured by this charming house and the amazing staff, always smiling, helpful and who went above and beyond for their guests.

A very special hotel.”

After spending one night in this hotel, I decided to change my travel plans to spend more time here and ended up spending six nights. The building itself has been exquisitely designed and renovated. My room (one of only seven in this small boutique hotel) was huge, far beyond my expectations, and beautifully appointed with lovely art work hanging on the walls. Great value for money. There are two beautifully landscaped courtyard gardens within the hotel where guests can sit and relax during the heat of the day. As wonderful as the building and facilities are, it was the staff that really made my stay here the fantastic experience it was. There are six staff members: Fadzrin, Sonny Jessie, Beth, Rashid and manager Linda. Not only did they each perform their duties professionally, but they each did so in a way that allowed their own wonderful personalities to shine. The owner has put together a wonderful team of genuinely lovely individuals, each and every one. I am a big fan of Georgetown, it brings a number of different aspects of the "real" Asia together in a single city and I will return in the next year or so. I couldn't imagine finding a hotel that would enhance my stay the way that East Indies Mansion did during my recent stay. Simply wonderful!

The pearl of Georgetown”

Homely, warm, tranquil

Absolutely fantastic place to stay - can't recommend it enough. Jesse (manager) and his team are super warm, friendly and really go out of their way to make everyone feel at home. We had many long family conversations sipping cups of Green Tea in an open courtyard, hearing Georgetown's sounds and the beautiful bamboo trees lurking at our sides. I can't recommend this place enough - it has an old world, historic feel to it. Very clean, safe and central to everything in Georgetown including the ferry terminal and the bus terminal to get access to the other parts of Penang island. I hope this place stays undiscovered and maintains its old-world charm without becoming commercialized. I know I will come back here. East Indies Mansion really won my heart and soul.

Excellent location, best staff ever, a haven. ”

Attentive staff with personalised and professional service, particularly prompt response to requests. We felt truly pampered. Beautiful mansion is like a home. Breakfasts fresh and delicious.

Best ever! So lucky to have stayed here. Worth every cent and would like to highly recommend it to all travellers to Penang. So do yourselves a favour and book in now. We also stayed at a far more expensive resort in Penang which paled in significance in every way possible compared to the East Indies Mansion. Entering the incredibly restored East Indies Mansion is like stepping back in time to the early days of Penang. And the staff are the most amazing we have ever come across in our international travels.

A "Home" in Penang”

Cozy, Welcoming and Warm Staffs, Good Location

My 2 nights stay in East Indies Mansion was a wonderful one. We were warmly welcomed by the staffs and he clearly explained the details to us and also remind us to make ourselves at home. We were always been served with a glass of ice water after we came back from our tour in Penang. Thank you so much for the attentiveness. Being a heritage building, you can find nice, vintage decoration everywhere around the hotel. Our room was situated at level one near the breakfast area, though can be slightly a bit noisy, but it's not a problem for us. The bed was comfortable and the lighting is alright. Please bear in mind that there is no tv in all room, the wifi in my room is not really strong, but once you are in the lobby, its alright. I think it's a great retreat from all the technologies gadgets... The location is good, walking distance to the Jetty where you can find the bus terminal. I will definitely stay there again.

Would love to stay here again!”

East Indies Mansion is definitely a charming place to stay in Penang. It has more than 200 years of history, even though we have to walk gently and talk softly in the premises because of its weak noise isolation from the original wooden structure, but this place would surely surprise you with its tranquility & beautiful decoration. I didn't expect to have such big nice suite by paying such little money, and not to mentioned that the room was really clean & tidy even though this is a very old building. Staffs are friendly as well, besides you only have to pay RM50 for deposit when checking in, but not RM200 as what other comments stated previously. The only bad thing is, this place is really happening and it's very hard to get yourself a parking during daytime.

Heritage hotel in the heart of Georgetown”

240 year old mansion, super staff

We enjoyed our stay. The staff was great led by Jess, who was super friendly. Quaint, imposing, historical mansion converted into a hotel with seven guest rooms. Classic architectural design from India style homes with open courtyards (aangan). We took the family suite with a large, high ceiling living room, master bedroom that is larger than most regular hotel rooms and a loft that had a double bed for the kids. Well furnished, superbly maintained, it is rare to get to live in a mansion like this. Staff is quite friendly, location is great and was a great and welcome change from living in a regular hotel. Keep it up East Indies Mansion.

It is difficult to find better...”

Staff, Breakfast, Location

Let's begin with the cons: if you're planning to stay here and then to go somewhere else, be ready to be disappointed! The quality of the service, the excellent location, the very delicious breakfast, will be difficult, or impossible, to be found on other places all around Malaysia. We planned to stay here for just one dayt, but then we decided to spend 4 nights. I do not like to give very high rates, but I must compare East Indies Mansion with all the other places we've been during our great month in Malaysia and, simply, there's no compare! The rooms are cozy, romantic and very quiet. The kindness of all the staff is just amazing, all the time. Everybody is always there to offer a great tea during the day, for suggestions on places to visit around George Town, or to plan your next destination. Location is just perfect, in the middle of Little India, very close to Chinatown. Breakfast is unforgettable, with few choices, all very good, served in a nice and relaxing inside garden. What else to say? I hope you'll have the chance to stay there. If you think the price is not too cheap, be ready to be amazed by the value!

Great garden, comfortable room, in the heart of the city

Staying at the East Indies Mansion was wonderful and I would have been happy to move in permanently! We stayed in the downstairs room, spacious and quiet (we mostly had the entire hotel to ourselves). The rest of the rooms are beautiful and for larger groups. The entire hotel is open aired, in true Malaysian style, with a garden in the middle where you can sit and escape the afternoon heat. There isn't a large staff or anyone on duty during the night, so you are given a key that lets you in and out of they hotel. Breakfast is prepared and left in the kitchen for you each morning, rice, a side dish of noodles, and fruit. All very nice. It is centrally located to most places of interest and you are never far from a restaurant. It was a very relaxing, boutique hotel which made our stay in Georgetown lovely!

Great location, authentic interior, clean and spacious rooms

East Indies Mansion is a small and somewhat hidden hotel in the heart of Georgetown. It is located on a quiet China Street, within walking distance of Chulia Street bars and famous Georgetown mural sites. The building is a recently renovated shophouse, very spacious and well decorated inside. I really liked their interior garden. Very friendly staff, decent breakfasts and wi-fi.

Location, Design, Staff

The room, the interior design, the staff, the location are fantastic. We love East Indies Mansion at the first sight. Staff are super helpful and friendly. Our first day was wonderful. Then came a big film crew arriving on the second day of our stay. They moved things around, we got asked if they could move some furniture into our room!!!. The shooting start early in the morning on the next day, when we came down for breakfast, we had to wait for the signal from the film crew to quickly and quietly walk across to the dinning area. The garden area was blocked for the film crew. At the check out, there was a film crew standing next to the reception. His job was the keep all activities at the reception quiet!!

Room was very clean upon check in. Aircon was very cool, quiet place to sleep at night. No mosqutioes at all for 3 nights . Security was good, they use wireless remote for in house guest on the front door entrance. Cons : it was raining very heavily, I came home at night and saw the room roof was leaking with yellowish water and dripping on the room floor. I did complained the staff, prompt action by the staff to take note and taken my complaint thoroughly. I chose to stay over the room . But i was disappointed by the roof leaking as the manison was taken over by new management and throughly renovated, but still this minor issue existed. Staff was helpful upon apporaching only but did not smile or greet hardly to in house guest. Wifi was terrible. Lastly please change the east indies manison on parking explanation, there is no such free parking for covered parking away from east indies manison. I had checked with east indies mansion staff already on free parking.

Gorgeous small b&b in great location”

We enjoyed every minute of our stay at the East Indies Mansion at a great location in Georgetown’s historic old town. Tom at the front desk made sure that all our needs were met and always offered advice and answered to any inquiries. He even carried our bags to the room which isn’t very common any more. The other staff was great, too. Sandra not only served the yummy breakfast and afternoon cake, but also provided insightful information about culture and customs of Penang’s diverse communities. Our room was very large for three people and we liked the upstairs location. It wasn’t a problem to have the bathroom outside the room as it wasn’t shared with anyone else. We highly recommend East Indies Mansion.

We loved our stay at East Indies Mansion thanks to the wonderful staff who looked after us. Nothing was too much trouble, at all. Charming boutique hotel”

Room size, comfort and value

East Indies Mansion isn't quite located in the "heart of the action" of Georgetown, ie, the largely pedestrianised area, but just outside closer to Little India and the banking district. That's not bad, but not perfect. That said, it isn't too much trouble walking around. It's just that in the blazing Penang heat, every second counts. The room, however, was huge for what we paid, a duplex with a nice sitting area and a very comfortable bedroom. No TV in the room, and I know, you're supposed to be outside when travelling. But hey, if that's purely the case, why have a decent and private bedroom at all. Breakfast was fairly decent and all in all, a worthwhile member of Georgetown's growing boutique hotel scene.
