The small city of Sur is located in Oman’s central coast, easily accessible by taxi as there is no airport in the city. Sur is really just a slightly large village, and offers a great place in which to lose some time exploring old forts and lighthouses by the coast, as there’s really not much else to see or do while in Sur.
Upon arrival in Sur, one will quickly see that getting around on foot is relatively easy to do, especially if staying in hotels near the city center. While in the city, don’t miss a chance to see the old traditional wooden boats of this region, most of which are actually still built in Sur. Right alongside Sur Beach
is an old wooden boat museum, located inside a retired workshop. Al Ayjah Watchtower
is an old lighthouse that offers spectacular views of the surrounding village, as well as the harbor, and it’s often most weekdays. The lighthouse is located near the major suspension bridge, which is in itself a local landmark and easy enough to find. Other than the watchtower, Sur is also home to many forts and ancient structures, one of which is Bilad Fort
. Most of these forts don’t offer much written history or artifacts, but they are interesting structures in which to move around and perhaps get a feel for what this place might have been like once upon a time.
