Popular Hostel and great location!”
The hotel is close to a variety of shops although we arrived in the evening and we couldn't go anywhere, we just had to sleep early in preparation for our tour the next day. The hotel has no reception past 9 PM so the access would be through the back door. Nobody was there to help so the staff provided us door keys in case we wanted to go for a night out. We stayed there only for a night but the place was clean but with narrow hallways and just stairs (I think since we did not see the lift). There was no air conditioner in our room but the weather was cool so we were okay. Remember to bring your own AU-NZ adapters for your chargers since the hotel doesn't have any. The kitchen's a shared one and clean as you go. Overall, it was satisfactory.
Dear Liza, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at our Backpackers. We are pleased to know that this was satisfactory for you and that you liked especially the cleanliness. Our reception hours are 8 AM until 8 PM but for late check-ins or any queries our on-site night manager is happy to help. For the safety of our guests we lock the main entrance overnight and provide only guests with a key to access the building through the night door. Adapters may be borrowed from reception. Best wishes, Backpackers Imperial
Afforadable hostel to stay but needs improvement”
Although the name is a hotel, it is a hostel. A good one to stay, affordable, right smack in the city surrounded by good eateries and restaurants. Many university students stay there because the uni accommodation is expensive. Hence hostel guests are often the same people which makes the environment safer in one sense. I was surprised that the Chinese lady manager has a phobia of replacing a blown light bulb. However, the night staff Michael found out that it was the wrong bulb and had it replaced quickly. He was also very helpful to bring my heavy luggage down the night exit when I checked out at 4.30 a.m. I know many hostels do not insure their staff and they are not obliged to carry luggage. Out of gratitude I gave him a tip but he refused to accept. The hostel has no lift, otherwise it would be beneficial for older guests. The toilet roll holders at the 2nd level female toilet always dropped to the floor. One of the toilet door lock is loose and locking is difficult.
Hello there, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are glad to read that you had an enjoyable stay at our Backpackers and that our location right in the city centre worked well for your visit to Hobart. Unfortunately the building we are located in is not equipped with a lift. We have taken care of the lock and the toilet roll holders in the meantime. We appreciate your feedback and are striving to improve continuously. Best wishes, Backpackers Imperial
Perfect location but dark corridor”
The location is perfect. It located just at the center of city. Skybus pick up and drop off station just nearby. Cons is the corridor is dark. There is no light turn on during night. Only an emergency exit light is light on which is pretty dangerous as the floor of the corridor is uneven.
Regret to stay in this place. ”
Housekeeping in general definitely need to be taken more attention of. I arrived the place - 6 bunk bed, the bed was made terribly, seemed like the sheets weren’t even changed but only straightened! Asked the receptionist and she didn’t wanna believe me at the first place. She came to check the room and told me she is sorry, ‘yeh, it wasn’t made properly but it’s fine, it’s made.’ I didn’t accept it and asked if I could change a room, she then informed me that I’ll have to pay more cause she’s only got 3 bed-room left. I paid as I didn’t have any choice, the room was still terrible (the day after I left Tassie, I’ve developed small red spots all over my body, super itchy and swollen, went to the doctor and he said it was very likely to be caused by dirty sheets). Toilets were dirty except the ones on the 3rd floor. I had a really unpleasant trip in Melbourne after staying in this backpacker due to this - skin rashes & itchiness... highly not recommended to anyone. Do not understand why it is rated so inaccurately on Agoda, stars definitely need to be dropped.
Hello there, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about your stay with us. We take all feedback seriously and are always striving to improve. We are sorry to read that you had to experience a skin irritation after your visit to Tasmania. However, you may rest assured that the sheets do get cleaned and changed and rooms get cleaned before each check-in so there are no conditions in our Backpackers which would cause skin rashes. You decided to upgrade to the smaller dorm after viewing this and advised you were satisfied so we are sorry to read that after all your stay was not up to your expectations and we had no further chance to make your stay enjoyable. Best wishes, Backpackers Imperial
Would not recommend. ”
Overpriced, dirty, noisy. The bed sheets were dirty and had hair on them. The floors have holes, the rooms smell, the walls are thin, any talking in the room will keep you up all night and staff will not do anything about it. The queen room Was not worth the $95 paid, these rooms are worth no more than $30-$40 a night. Wouldn’t strongly recommend against staying here.
Hi David, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to read that your stay at our Backpackers was not up to your expectations. We appreciate all feedback and are striving to improve continuously. Best wishes, Backpackers Imperial
Brilliant position and almost everything you need”
Yes, it's primarily a backpacker hostel, but it also caters to ordinary budget travellers with a range of private double and twin rooms. Once upon a time this would have been a wonderfully appointed old world charm inner city hotel. They are spending a lot of money on it (recently been reroofed and all bathrooms upgraded). All rooms have share facilities but there are multiple bathrooms on all three levels and they are newly renovated and spotless. The commercial kitchen on level two is huge with all the facilities you need (Woolworths supermarket about two minutes walk away) and there are two rambling large community areas (books, pool table, etc) on level one and level two. Be warned though, if you find stairs a bit of a challenge, make sure you request a room on the first level. The staircases are big as the ceilings in this wonderful old hotel are enormous. We will definitely stay here again as the position smack bang in the middle of the city cannot be beaten!
Hi Suzanne, Thanks very much for taking the time to leave us such a detailed review. We appreciate all feedback and like to see where we are doing well and where we can improve. We are glad to see that you had an enjoyable stay, that you liked our facilities and that our central location worked well for your visit. Best wishes, Backpackers Imperial
Booked for two nights Friday 25th and Saturday 26th Jan. unfortunately due to the Bush fires our bus from lake st Clair to Hobart was cancelled. When we asked for a refund the business stated that their cancellation policy was 48hr notice. I stated to the lady that I didn’t want to cancel the booking but amend it for one night instead of two and I requested a refund as the Bush fires meant we had to pay additional accomodation costs to stay where were were for another night. The answer was still no- I found this unreasonable. Upon arrival to the property on the Saturday I found the rooms very underwhelming for the price we had paid, with the property requesting further $ for item such as towels. The rooms are not as depicted in the photos. Agoda kindly gave us vouchers for the cost of the first night and we ended up using them to stay else where.
Hi Chloe, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. You made your reservation through a third party and paid for your stay to them. So for booking cancellations, booking modifications and refunds we recommend to contact your booking agent directly or your travel insurance in case of natural disasters. We are glad to know you could be helped with a refund eventually. We are sorry to read that our Backpackers was not up to your expectations. We do provide towels free of charge (on request) for private room bookings and ask for a rent of $2 for dorm room bookings. We hope you enjoyed your visit to Tasmania even though the bush fires interfered with this. Best wishes, Backpackers Imperial
Not good value for money”
For a single room for $83, give a towel, have flyscreen in the window. Just because you’re a hostel for $81 should compete in the market. You are no where near it! I couldn’t get out quick enough! Absolutely hated it!
I booked 2 nights but was disappointed because there was an emergency, the fire alarm rang around 6am and all of us had to go down. I was afraid at that time so I decided to moved out and checked out as early as 8am.
What a dump! Hair on the sheets and bathroom was off”
$92 thrown in the bin. This was was flithy and dirty hostel... Only thing good about it was the free wifi and that too struggled. It's a very dirty place with very thin walls... If you're wanting sleep, would rather be a better idea to sleep in a park. If you're after a clean and affordable hostel, look elsewhere.
Hi Peter, Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your stay at our Backpackers. We are sorry to read that it was not up to your expectations. Our wifi connection was weak in some parts of the building recently but this has been fixed so that it is fast and reliable again in all parts of our Backpackers. We appreciate your feedback and are striving to improve continuously. Best wishes, Backpackers Imperial
Here has kind staff and It's closed from the facilities and stores.
Hi there, We thank you for your feedback and are glad to know that you liked our Backpackers with its' convenient location and friendly staff. Best wishes, Backpackers Imperial
Nice hostel in general
[WARNING] DO NOT BOOK IT IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY”
I checked in for around 15 mins then decided to find a new hotel. I cannot emphasize enough how terrible this place is. I don't know how much they paid Agoda "behind the scenes" to have the "bestseller" tag at the time I made the booking. The only good thing is its location. All other things are so awful. Very dirty, dark, old, noisy and the worst is I could not ask for a refund after booking this. Really want to give them -5 if I could. Again, stay away from this place at all cost.
Humiliated by staff, go somewhere else”
I was assigned a bunk bed bedroom, which did not correspond to the booking description, the female receptionist did so because she thought, in her own words, that I was trying to scorn her getting a better rate online rather than booking through the reception, so she gave me an upper bunk bed and said for the price that is was I was getting, ignoring the description at Agoda website. When I complained about the locker, the asian male employee was extremely rude, he thought I was lying about the locker to find a reason to change room and said he couldn't do anything, I said to him that it is not the way to an answer, and he said he didn't care, and told me to leave the reception. The manager, an asian woman was on the staff side, she neglected my reasons for the quarrel with the employee, the female receptionist even lied saying I was rude to her, and they all decided to expel me from the hotel, assuming an intimidating attitude with the help of a french employee, and ignoring my plea to forget about it and let me stay, because I liked the location near the centre and the accesible price. Avoid this place, there are more comfortable hotels in Hobart, with bathroom in the room, unlike the crowded bathrooms at the Imperial hotel, less people in the room, and offer discount for longer stays, as I confirmed.
My friend and I had a nice stay here. We shared a mixed 8 person dorm. Free wifi (not the best), communal lounge/TV area, lockers, recently renovated room - clean. Only downside is no aircon. Street outside was a bit noisy at night, clock ringing all the time. Bathrooms didn't have hand soap??? Other than that a pleasant stay for one night.
it is a hostel not a hotel”
I stayed two nights there. Room condition is acceptable in terms of pricing. Bed is comfortable. One night, bathroom motion-sensing lighting was out of order and hot water supply was little, gave me a unforgettable bath experience.
Good location but can be cleaner”
The hostel is value for money. It is in a good location and convenient to travel around. However, the rooms and bathrooms could be cleaner. Overall a good place if you are on budget and looking to stay in the city.
Good value for money and clean condition”
I took a single room as I was heading for my Point to Pinnacle torture. The bed was comfortable, and clean. The location is convenient close to amnesties and not far stroll from sight seeing and Hobart attractions. The only issue is with noise around the building, its antique, so you would feel most steps. I personally dont mind that.
Satisfactory hostel but some improvements needed”
This hostel provides a good solid basic hostel facilities but it lacks attention to detail and care. They are current investing in refurb so it may be great after but there were wires sowing in the wall of the newly refurbed bathroom and the kitchen was closed early Sunday AM when it should have been open so I couldn’t get my breakfast before going in a trip and also had to leave my lunch behind that is pre made so I had to them incur the expense of the both breakfast and lunch out on an organised day trip. The kitchen needs to be open earlier fir people who are doing trips as most pick ups go from 7-8am. The lounge is great and kitchen has sufficient facilities to cook and store food and is a nice place to sit and eat. The new bathroom shower are is great.
There is no facilities in the bedroom. We didn’t find linen on the bed, we had to seek for linen around the property as the receptionist didn’t tell anything about linen. Property too old. Too many bathrooms out of order. Any foot noise can be heard. I woke 5am because foot noise on the level above. Only the location and price were good. Would not recommend.
