Traveler impressions of Andong-si

More about Andong-si

Andong is found in South Korea’s North Gyeongsang province. The city serves as the self-proclaimed Capital City of Korean Spiritual Culture. It is said the city’s international claim to fame came when Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain was asked to be taken to the most Korean place in Korea.

Andong prides itself on maintaining aspects of traditional culture throughout the past 2,000 years. There are more than 280 cultural assets to be found in and around the city. A great place to experience this culture is in the Hahoe Folk Village – a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can experience a traditional Korean mask dance, visit the tree inhabited by the Samshin goddess, and capture the village in its entirety from Byongdae Cliff. Another fascinating site is Bongjeongam Temple, the city’s largest temple and the site of the oldest wooden building in Korea. There are also a couple of historical sites related to Korean Confucianism. There are plenty of dishes to savor here such as jjimdak and grilled salted mackerel, and accommodation is varied between traditional houses, temple stays, budget options, and luxury hotels.

Be sure to check out the interactive map of Andong for information on hotel locations, attractions, and must-see destinations.
