More about Ballarat

Ballarat is a city of gold and freedom set about an hour and a half’s drive to the west of Melbourne. It was a former goldmining town and is also considered the birthplace of Australian democracy. Those coming from Melbourne Airport can utilize a shuttle service to reach Ballarat or take the train to Ballarat Station.

Sovereign Hill is one of the top attractions to experience when in Ballarat. Designed as an 1850s goldmining town, it is complete with period costumes and a chance to pan for gold, a sound and light show depicting the Eureka Uprising, and the Gold Museum. The site of the rebellion can be explored at Eureka Stockade Center. Outside the historical sites, a replica medieval castle known as Kryal Castle can be visited for both day and night experiences. Ballarat Botanical Gardens and Ballarat Wildlife Park both make for an excellent day out, and several markets are open throughout the week, selling antiques and various local products.
