We thought the Black house was the most interesting museum/temple we'd seen on our entire 3 week trip through SE Asia until we found The White Temple and art gallery! Oh Dear, what fascinating attractions Chiang Rai has to offer! Add to that the warm friendly small town ambiance, great shopping, and really good inexpensive restaurants and you've found the perfect vacation paradise!
There are so many Doi and national park up in the mountain. Visiting hill tribes, elephants, the border market, and so on are also possible.
The city itself is not much, so I would recommend for 1-2 nights are enough. But do stay in the mountain for a relaxation, there are plenty things to do.
The livestyle of the people is slower than in Bangkok, the song-teow transporters are sometimes taking advantage from tourists.
You can visit beautiful temples, shopping everywhere. The food are plentiful, can find everywhere, most of them cheap and good.
I travelled to Chiang Mai with my parents. We had a really interesting time there visiting The Golden Triangle and learning about the opium run.
We went to the Municipality Gardens that were truly beautiful at night and eat at the local market. We saw the hill tribes which were interesting for my parents as first time visitors, but for me if is now far too commercial as I first visited them 25 years ago in their natural habitat. We also visited the gardens created by the King's mother which were really pretty and very interesting. Chiang Rai is a great place to visit.
Not much to offer in the City Centre apart from the Night Market and the usual stores. However out of the city there are many attractions such boat trips, and visits to Hill Tribes.
Recomment a visit to Dio Tong 50km north of the city, with wonderful gardens surrounding a Royal mountain-top Palace.
There are many activities in Chiang Rai, not just the natural exploring but also the art and cultural in the heritage province
The Black House and White Temple not to miss. The evening market is great on Saturday. Easy to get around here.
Ban Duu, hot springs 20 mins drive north of town are super relaxing. A must. Best hot springs in C Rai.
Night bazaar is so so, as well as walking street. Best thing about C Rai,there's very little to do apart from relax n chill out. A MUST is to hire a bike/cycle and venture out within a few minutes into the glorious countryside !!!!!!!!! Stunning.
The weather is nice, much cooler than Chiang Mai. I visited the Wat Rong Khun (White temple) and Golden Triangle.
The White Temple is awesome and must-have sightseeing while the Golden Triangle is quite far from the city and not so interesting. At night, I walk around the city center where I can have good street food. There is a gold big and impressive clock tower also. Very nice.
A very nice city up in the north. Easy to reach from Bangkok and other places by air. Very nice surroundings.
Mehkong river, White temple, Black house, The Golden triangle and so on.... The city itself is also very nice to walkaround by foot.
Chiang Rai is a nice, laid-back city, still - thought unfortunately on the way to becoming another Chiang Mai, which has becoming over-developed.
Most famous, probably, for its proximity to the Golden Triangle and Mae Sai, a shopping heaven for things from China. Also a place for people to cross into Burma to get their passports stamped. My favorite thing to do is to hire a van and go way up into the mountain to the coffee and tea plantations. Doi Tung is also well worth a visit. Not much in the town itself, though we like the traditional we markets, etc. but hiring a van can take you to a lot of really interesting places.
Chang RAI IS MUCH BETTER SUITED IN OFFERING QUALITY NATURE ACTIVITIES THAN THE BNGKOK AREA, WHITH BETTER ACCOMMODATIONS AT AMUCH BETTER PRICE THAN BANGKOK.
There's not many things to talk about Chiang Rai, cause it's just a little copy of Chiang Mai and on the road to Golden Triangle.
I just stay 1 night in Chiang Mai, go around the city, enjoy the light & music performance at Clock Tower (around 5-10 min.), then go shopping in night bazaar and go to Singha Park for photo shooting in the next morning. I did not visit pagodas in Chiang Rai cause I has seen a lot in Chiang Mai :D. I feel peace in Chiang Rai but not too special.
Chiang Rai is a lovely place to relax, has affordable delicious food, is cooler than Chiang Mai at night and less crowded too! However, if you are geared for high octane entertainment, Chiang Mai is better.
The city is small and not very interesting. Charming for sure but apart from the White Temple, it isn't really worth staying long time.
The nature around will be interesting but not better than any other city up north. Better use it as a stop place to visit the temple and then continue your trip to Mae Hong Son or Phayao and so on. The roads here in the north are breathtaking
Medium size city, not polluted (except in March-April). Unspoilt, relatively few tourists. Intresting and beautiful surroundings.
Not a big city but with peaceful, traffic problem less, food are nice. overall is the very relax city.
A quiet and relaxing town, close to Golden Triangle and Hill Tribes - who once used opium as medicinal purposes.
Chiang Rai is ideally located for trips to the northwest ot Thailand including the golden triangle area.
We recommend to hire a car with driver which allows ti visit only the places you want to see (we paid 2000 bahts per day)
Chiang Rai is a quiet place and is rather laid back. The people are very friendly and they go out of their way to accommodate visitors.
However, we as visitors must respect them and their culture and we will be treated with respect and kindness in return. We visited the shrine of King Rama in the city. We also visited a famous museum built by a famous artist.
Whilst in Chiang Rai visited Golden Triangle, Long Neck Village Tribe, travelled to border of Northern Thailand & Burma Mae Sai, Visted White Temple.
..plenty of sightseeing to do in Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai is very good to see, we went to Maesai the Myamar Boarder was very good trip we enjoy a lot there, a lot of things to buy, a lot of atraction to visit it was a very good trip
Chiangrai is in the northern of Thailand beyond Chaingmai the famous city.the culture of people in Chiangrai is similar to that of Chiangmai.
Lot of interesting place to visit for example Thakilek, the border of Thailand and Myanmar, The golden Triagle, Wat Rong Khun.
It is a large enough city with plenty of minor attractions. The real attraction is its proximity to the Border and the last "comfortable" stay before getting there.
Chiang Rai is a small city and, as small cities go, it is reasonable. They do cater for the Chinese more and more, so if you like Chinese food there are plenty of choices of restaurants but the historical aspects of Chiang Rai are certainly appealing.
It is far from Chiang Mai,be prepared to spend some time driving up north, and make several stops in between.
However, it rewards you with several good places... like their Mae Fah Luang Garden, good restaurants, the Golden triangle, Wat Rong Khun (the white temple) etc... I think these are very unique buildings and places that can excite the children. They are not places to have fun, but places to enrich their general knowledge. And you can take magnificent photos there.
Protect forest and environment, control smoke from fire forest, promote non plastic use for food package
wonderful laid back city with lots of opportunities to travel or sport activities. awesome walking street but commercial night market.
See the Yet Yot Tempel in the center and also the Wat Prew Kaw. Outside CR go to the White Tempel, the Black House ( Baan Dam) of the national artist Tawan Dutchanee on the way to Rachapan University.
And see Rain Chern Tawan, a mediation center from the wellkown Thais monck in Huasak ( on the way to Toeng, about 15 km out of town). Buy on the local market at the old clock area in the center of CR, and eat with the locals.
Awesome place, hire a driver for the day to show you the best spots. Spend half day at spa, the shopping at the snake place is very reasonably priced compared to other tourist hot spots.
The white temple is just beautiful, love Chiang rai, would recommend to everyone.
