More about Garut

If looking for a great tourist destination in Indonesia’s West Java, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Garut. This hill resort is brimming with a mix of historical, natural, and adventurous attractions. Public transportation such as horse carts and motorcycles make it easy to reach most all the sites and activities here. Getting to Garut is possible via road, with a journey from Bandung taking about 2 hours while traveling from Jakarta will take around 4 hours.

From laidback to adrenaline-pumping, Garut has it all. The rivers of Cikandang and Cimanuk offer beautiful views that whiz by if you are enjoying the challenges of white water rafting. There are a number of waterfalls that can be visited, including Curug Orok, Curug Citiis, and Curug Cihangawar. Although they can’t be ridden, they make for a beautiful view. Another natural wonder to visit is the Papandayan Crater on one of Indonesia’s most active volcanos as well as Kamojang Crater which is a rich natural resource for geothermal power. A bit out of the city is the popular beach of Santolo, and next to it is the beach of Sayang Heulang. If looking for some history, the ancient Cangkuang Temple is 16km from Garut on an island in a lake, accessible via a ride on bamboo rafts. There are also six traditional houses here called Kampung Pulo.
