Traveler impressions of Hat Yai

More about Hat Yai

Hat Yai is a southern Thai city near the Malaysian border, a popular destination for both Malaysians and Singaporeans. Besides serving as a weekend getaway, the city is a popular point of transit. Trains pass through Hat Yai from stations as far away as Singapore. Those not arriving by train usually fly in through Hat Yai International Airport.

Hat Yai’s close proximity to the Malaysian border has allowed the city to experience strong Muslim influences in its local customs, food, and architecture. Chinese culture is also apparent and best displayed at the Kim Yong Market. The Chinese New Year is a major celebration every year, and it as well as the Songkran Festival are highlights of the year.

Being the largest city in the Songkhla province, Hat Yai host national tours and features Western-styled pubs and bars. The cultural melting pot here has helped establish a thriving dining scene with popular cuisine, including Halal dishes, vegetarian stir fries, fresh seafood and Thai specialties like mango sticky rice. Sights outside the city include Wat Hat Yai Nai and Phra Phuttamongkhol Maharaj, which is believed to be the third-largest reclining Buddha in the world. There's also Ton Nga Chang Waterfall in the Ton Nga Chang Wildlife Sanctuary.
