Most restuarant don't open for lunch and most places close 8.30pm. Find the area with 25 stalls selling different foods in the evening.
Hire a car and go to Mt Sakurajima for the day, Sand Spa in Ibusuki, spring water soaked soba noodles by Lake Ikeda and stop off for shopping at N's City 250x75m supermarket with 2 levels
you need to spend longer to find out more in the city. Shopping and food are the most attractive in the town.
Also, there are a lot of onsen around (culture of japan), must try and it good for relax.
Kagoshima is a nice pl to stay and roam around freely. it has many attractions areas and onsen. the Ibusuki (mud sand bathe) is a must to visit.
There is much to see and do in Kagoshima. With an active volcano just a short ferry ride across the bay, to historical sites as the Meiji Restoration Museum there is no shortage of things to see.
Also it is very close to Ibusuki with its' spas and gardens.
Kagoshima is a great place if your interested in Japanese history around the Meiji restoration as well the regional cuisine of Kagoshima.
The local delicacies include black pork and beef, Chiran tea and of course the the distilled spirit from sweet potatoes called shochu. A trip should include a trip to sakuarjima, an active volcano across Kinko Bay that dominates Kagoshima's skyline. Lastly, there is alittle known garden that is one of the best in Japan called Sengan-en about 20 minutes from the city center, probably one of the best three gardens in Japan with its spacious grounds of the former Lord of Satsuma with incrdible uninteruptedviews of Sakurajima looking over Kinko Bay.
Incredible local food! Fun, lively city. Warm and inviting people and weather. Active volcano is a must-see, lots of great natural beauty around the area.
Good transit, lots of shopping and facilities. Would definitely go back!
those attractive landscapes are far away from JR Station/centre and it is recommended tourists to have spare travel time for transportation.
Can't believe that the city is so close to the volcano. It is a great place for shopping and sightseeing.
Don't forget to try the Kagoshima Black Pork in the city.
From Kagoshima City, you can go to Sakurajima Island easily by ferryboat. Streetcars are handy to ride, comfortable and easy to find the way.
If you buy a one-day pass for transportation, you can use city bus, streetcar, Sakuramima Ferryboat, etc. Get a city map at the information desk in a station, visit some famous spots on the map using a one-day pass.
nice and helpful people, delicious food. however the frequency of the bus schedule is not enough. it costs around one hour in between next bus.
check the time schedule is essential to make a good travel plan. i think it is not a good time to travel in June. It is always cloudy and the mountains are hided by big clouds in my trip.
Dec is not a good time to go to Kagoshima as it is wet and rainy every afternoon with little to do except to soak in the hot bath!

Kagoshima is on the southern tip of Japan, right on the water. It has excellent museums and a bus that circles the most popular sight seeing spots.
