Hot-springs, more hot-springs, and even more hot-springs is what is on the menu for anybody visiting this small resort town in Gunma. The area is literally a hot spot for active volcanic activity and the famous Onsens of Japan, more commonly known as hot-springs. The best way to reach Kusatsu is via Naganohara Kusatsuguchi Station, followed by a half-hour local bus ride into Kusatsu, where the hotels and resorts are plentiful and relaxation is easy to come by.

Of course, the most popular activity for visitors to this area are the hot-springs, and the biggest of them all is Yubatake. The name literally translates to “hot water field,” and it is the largest concentration of hot springs in all of Japan. As a popular attraction, the baths and cooling areas that have been strategically placed around it are often full, so timing one’s visit to avoid the crowds might be a good way to go.

The active volcano site of Mount Shirane Kusatsu attracts many tourists to the stunningly green crater lake is a very popular destination.
