Traveler impressions of Mae Salong (Chiang Rai)

More about Mae Salong (Chiang Rai)

A quiet sleepy village in the rolling hills of Chiang Rai province, Mae Salong is a very unique place. Although officially a village in Thailand, Mae Salong has more of a Chinese history and cultural influence than any other area in Thailand. The history of Mae Salong dates back to Thailand’s very early times, and the Chinese influence dates back to the late 1940s, when thousands of Yunnanese soldiers made this small hill village their home away from the People’s Republic.

Politics and history aside, Mae Salong is a beautiful place in which to enjoy the quietness of nature. Visit places like Doi Mae Salong Tea Plantation, where the local oolong tea is something worth taking home, and Santikhiri Temple, located within easy reach of the center of town. While Mae Salong is worth visiting at any time of the year, it’s especially photogenic between the months of November through February, when sunflowers, sakura, and plum blossoms fill the hills and create a heady mixture of floral scents and breathtaking colors. There are many guesthouses and gorgeous traditional boutique hotels in Mae Salong, but as this small village is extremely popular especially during the peak season, it’s important to book well in advance in order to find the right accommodation.

There’s a lot more to see and do in Mae Salong, and the best way to discover what else this city has to offer in terms of attractions, landmarks, and hotels is by exploring the interactive map on this page.
