Traveler impressions of Padang

More about Padang

The city of Padang is the capital of Indonesia’s West Sumatra Province, and a popular destination among surfers because of its proximity to some of Indonesia’s most visited surf sites. The city is served by Minangkabau International Airport, which is about 25 kilometers outside of the city center but easily accessible by taxi or rental car.

Once in the city, visitors will find many attractions to keep them busy and entertained such as the stunning coastline and beaches that surround the city. Places such as Carocok Beach is a popular destination for vacation-goers looking for the leisurely activities of watching the waves while walking along the coast, or enjoying the famous Padang cuisine at authentic beach-front restaurants.

The site of the Malin Kundang Rock is a popular destination for visitors to this area. Local legend says that the rock formation found at Air Manis Beach is that of a man who offended his mother, whose curse turned the man and his ship into rocks. People often walk around this beach and the stone formations while enjoying the views of the beautiful islands just beyond the clear blue waters.
