The reason we stayed in Penola rather than go to Robe was we thought we would experience the vineyards at Coonawarra.
Penola is right next to Coonwarra. Being 6months pregnant, I was the driver rather than drinker, and it was very difficult and at one time intimidating, to drive my husband from vineyard to vineyard when the road speed limit is 110km p/h rather than the 50-60 km p/h that is really needed there. The reason it was intimidating was because as I was slowing down to find the particular vineyard , a truck suddenly was behind me (I was regularly checking for traffic as I didn't want to slow anyone down). I immediately moved into the next "lane", ie got out of the way, and the truck gave a long toot of the horn (ie it was not a short, "thank you" toot"). I relayed this to the lady working at Wynns estate later and her answer was that tourists should be aware of the speed limit, that when they arrive they should plan their vineyard visits on the map, so they can go the speed limit. She did not care that we only were given a map after visiting the 3rd vineyard, that I did everything I could to try to stay not to slow down fast moving traffic, but then immediately moving out of the way. I was upset that I had slowed someone down. But I didn't deserve rudeness, first from the truck driver, and second from the staff member at Wynns estate. I ended up telling the lady that I would be telling everyone that came to visit at Coonawarra to just drive right past Wynns estate, because they didn't care whether a visit to their vineyard was missed because visitors drove past too fast to keep to the speed limit. I will definitely be recommending people take the road to Robe, unfortunately for the lovely ladies who ran the accomodation that we stayed at.
