A home away from home.”
Arriving at Plantation Retreat feels like a home away from home. Sarath, the owner, picked us up with his car at the main road, as the tiny road up to his place was undoable for the van who brought us there from Dambulla. Hard to believe, at first, but once Sarath did the way uphill with us we completely understood! Plantation Retreat is essentially an old colonial house, built by the original owner of what used to be a quite large tea plantation in the 19th century. When Sarath’s family took over the estate two generations ago they converted the tea plantation into a mixed spice plantation and kept the colonial house as their family home. Over time Sarath, who gained some experience in the tourism business as manager of various hotels, reduced the size of the plantation and cultivates the remainder with just two local workers to keep everything eco-friendly and very natural.
