More about Amman City Center

Amman city center is a frenetic place where old and new worlds collide in a collage of ancient Roman ruins and brand new mosques. Romans preferred to build their cities on a series of hills, and that’s exactly what they did here in Amman. The highest hilltop is in Jebel al-Qala’a, crowned by the Amman Citadel and home to Umayyad Palace and the Temple of Hercules. This is an important area for tourists, and guided tours commonly take place here.

Another prominent hill is Jebel Amman, which boasts some of the best luxury accommodation in the city center. This area has a lively street culture, and its compact streets are lined with cafés and coffeehouses. While shades of traditional life still linger here, the atmosphere isn't as frenetic as in other parts of the city center, making this a relaxing place to escape the midday heat after a morning of sightseeing.

For the majority of tourists, the Roman ruins and the traditional marketplaces receive most of the attention, but Amman city center has a few modern attractions worth visiting. The King Abdullah I Mosque was built in the 1980s, and it's easily the most majestic mosque in Jordan. Its impressive blue dome seals a prayer hall that can hold 3,000 worshippers.

Most of the visitors based in Amman are tourists, which is why the selection accommodation includes as many budget hotels as luxury options. The most affordable guesthouses are hidden away on winding alleys that slink through the historic quarter. Meanwhile, the most comfortable hotels in the city center front major thoroughfares.
