Traveler impressions of Amritsar

More about Amritsar

Amritsar is a holy city in India’s Punjab state. It is incredibly well-known amongst those of the Sikh faith as this is where the Golden Temple is found. Completed in 1601, the temple has continuously attracted people with both its blessings and its architectural grandeur, making it a major religious and tourist hub. Accessing the city is easy with the Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport only a 15-minute drive from the city center.

For travelers to Amritsar, the first – and sometimes the only one visited – site many go to see is the Golden Temple. The stunning complex is the most important religious site for the Sikhs, and you’ll find thousands of pilgrims who have made their journey here. Many that you see working in the temple travel here to fulfill their religious duty of volunteering for a week. Various sections of the temple that are easily noticed and worth a close-up include the water surrounding the temple - the Amrit Sarovar and the Harmandir Sahib. Outside the temple are other popular sites to visit such as Jallianwala Bagh where a memorial of the Amritsar massacre is found. The Mata Temple is something of a unique experience and sometimes comes off as a fun house with its low tunnels, caves of ankle-deep, and mirrored hallways. The Summer Palace of Mahajara Ranjit and Ram Tirth also warrant a visit for those exploring Amritsar.
