"The combination of the Ngimat Ayu House, Ngimat Ayu family and Bario community in general created possibly the best travelling experience I have ever had. The family were incredibly welcoming, bringing me and my friend to local dinners in the community, and always eating with us at mealtimes (the food is fantastic, both meat (including wild boar and wild deer) or vegetarian). They take an interest in your plans for the day, and are keen to make recommendations or bring you along to certain places of interest with them. I hiked up Prayer Mountain with the owner early one morning in time for sunrise, for example. The accommodation itself is beautiful and clean. Electricity only runs from around 7pm via generators, but this is typical of everywhere in Bario and arguably helps you detach from the busyness of wherever you have come from. The same goes for the lack of WiFi across the town. Having wandered around the town and seen other homestays, I think it is fair to say that Ngimat Ayu appears more comfortable than the others (dare I say it, a bit more 'upmarket'!) but this has in no way detracted from the sense of community or Bario atmosphere. But the homestay vibe is not too over-bearing; the accommodation is still fantastic if you just want to chill out, relax and take it all in slowly. I cannot recommend this place any more - it is genuinely a gem, in an incredible town. If you are thinking of going, you must!"

"I stayed four nights in this traditional longhouse. The experience was the highlight of my trip to Bario. The host family were very welcoming and inclusive. I enjoyed the meals, loved waking up in the mist and sitting by the fire in the hearth sharing stories. I learned some beading and spent a lot of time relaxing on the verandah overlooking the rice fields. "
