Traveler impressions of Bergen

More about Bergen

Norway’s second city is a tourist popular, especially for those looking for the some of the best preserved medieval architecture along with a great gateway to the fjords of West Norway. Bergen is also home to a large concentration of much of the country’s independent artists and museums.

The city is served by Bergen Airport Flesland, which is located just 20 kilometers outside of the city, as well as a train line that runs from Oslo directly into Bergen.

One of the best-kept medieval forts of Norway is Bergenhus Fortress, which is located near downtown, near the ferry terminal, and easily the best way to spend at least one entire day exploring. The fortress is home to the royal hall of Hakonshallen, built in the 12th century and still in use today. Nearby this impressive building is the Rosenkrantz Tower, which is another important landmark of the city.

Outdoor activities in Bergen are not to be missed, and one of the popular of these is the Waterfront Fish Market. Although today the fish market may not be the premier place to buy fish, it’s still an active part of the city’s fish trade and a great way to spend a few hours mingling with the locals, who often go to this market to buy fresh fish at a much cheaper price than the super markets.

The sights of Bergen are very extensive, and the active traveler who wants to spend every waking moment looking at museums and architecture can most certainly find something with which to fill their time. However, given this city’s natural beauty and welcoming climate, it’s important to take time to see some of the local parks and public spaces.
