Guided or Unguided trip to see the glacier? 1) if you want see the terminal face of the glacier, you can either do it on your own(drive in to the carpark and walk on route e) or signed up with a guided tour.
Do note that if you were to trek on the route that leads to near the terminal face of the glacier, you might not be able to see the glacier as the route could be closed if the weather is rainy (which is quite normal in Fox Glacier) 2) if you want to walk on the glacier and see blue ice, you can only do so with a guide
It is wonderful to drive from Christchurch to Fox Glacier with wonderful scene around. It may not feel bored for these 7 hours drive as the scene is wonderful.
Since some glacier collapsed and blocked the original walking path, taking a helicopter trip to visit Fox Glacier is the only choice to have a nice view.
Although there are some options for the walking, but none of them can have a impressive view of the glacier. Get on the helicopter if you do not want to regret!
Nice small town. I definitely had fun doing the half day glacier hike. Also walked around lake matheson which is a 10 minute drive from town center.
Fox Galcier is much quiet than Franz Josep, we choose to stay 1 night in Fox Glacier because we wanted to go Lake Matheson for Sunrise.
I joined the Glacier tour there, the guide was very kind and introduced a lot about the knowledge of the glacier.
However, because the glacier faded very fast, we couldn't walk on the glacier now but only access by helicopter. I really hope I could touch and walk on it. :(
