Hakodate Kokusai Hotel
Hakodate,Hakodate - View on map
"Nice hotel in Hakodate. Less than a 10 minute walk from the JR train station (even in the snow, with suitcases)--a straight shot when you exit the station to the right. The hotel isn't the newest but it was very clean and it did not smell of smoke. The bathroom is larger than the one's we experienced in Tokyo. The Japanese breakfast buffet was delish--who wouldn't love to try a little bit of everything--from sashimi, curry, miso soup, omelets, Hokkaido potatoes/milk/yogurt, etc. The morning market is right between the hotel and the train station, too! The one con was the uncontrollable heating. As someone who is a hot sleeper, I found the room unbearable at night. There is no thermostat or window to open."

Hotel Paco Hakodate
Hakodate,Hakodate - View on map
"Interior of the hotel has the resemblence of a 4 or 5 stars hotel. Very nice looking. The rooms are superbly clean and the equipments look very new. One down side is the floor seems to be popping out at a few spots probably due to weather or bad carpentry. Location is some distance from JR, but not something one would shun away from unless they are not keen on exploring the area or handicapped, otherwise, we had fun making full use of the daily tram&bus passes to explore the main hakodate touristy and quieter areas. 1 of the best hotel in Hakodate for sure. We didnt make use of the free Onsen."

Hakodate Danshaku Club Hotel & Resorts
Hakodate,Hakodate - View on map
"Booked 2 nights stay in Hakodate Danshaku Club Hotel & Resorts. The hotel is near by JR Hakodate Station about 5 min walking distance and near Hakodate Morning Market. Apartment style - 2 queen bed joined together, small kitchen facilities with equipment and bath tub facing the Mt. Hakodate. Room is clean, big and cosy. Superb night scenery which our room is facing Mt. Hakodate. This is a best hotel and biggest room we stay during my Hokkaido trip. Hotel is giving Yen500 rebate for those choice not clean the room and just change towel. Front counter staff services is good and friendly. "

HOTEL MYSTAYS Hakodate Goryokaku
Hakodate,Hakodate - View on map
"Although Hotel Mystays Hakodate Goryokaku is not located directly in Hakodate city center (15 minutes away), it is easily accessible by city tram, for which the tram station is right outside hotel doorstep. There are multiple department stores within walking distance and a convenience store (Lawson) on the first level of the hotel. Room is remarkably spacious as compared to other Japanese hotel. Our room had an great view of the city area with Mount Hakodate in the background. Also, room is spotless and the pajamas provided is very comfortable. Reception and valet staff are friendly and polite. Parking is reasonably priced at 700 Yen per night. Overall, we are very pleased with Hotel Mystays Hakodate Goryokaku and would highly recommend anyone who visits Hakodate to stay. Cheers :)"

Four Points by Sheraton Hakodate
Hakodate,Hakodate - View on map
"This is one of the most strategic hotels in Hakodate. Once exit from the JR station, its immediately to the right of the main entrance area. The tram station is also just within a stone's throw distance from the hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff, as always in Japan. The seafood bazaar is just adjacent to the JR station, which is again very near to the hotel. You can catch up with all the seafood delicacies, served fresh! Even the bus which takes you to the hill top scenic night view is also in front of the hotel within walking distance."

Traveler impressions of Hakodate

More about Hakodate

Like Kobe and Yokohama, Hakodate was one of Japan’s first cities opened to trade. It later became the capital of the short-lived Republic of Ezo. Today the city is a popular retreat for domestic tourists, but the culture and history is worth the attention of international travelers as well. It is served by Hakodate Airport, and train services are also available to reach the city.

A top destination for tourists in Hakodate is Motomachi, the historical district. A mix of sites showcase the early days of foreign trade and their traders. A walk from the Higashi Honganji Temple to the Foreign Cemetery makes for a pleasant day and passes by a number of historical consulates and churches, including the Roman Catholic Church and Russian Orthodox Church. Those interested in the time of the Ezo Republic can visit Fort Goryokaku and the viewing platform of Koryokaku Tower. For the natural experience, head to Mount Hakodate. Locals here say that views of the city rank as one of the Three Best Night Views in the world. Exploration outside the city is offered with an express train going to Lake Onuma which has a mid-sized ski resort adjacent to it. And a scenic drive to Esan makes for a great day trip, especially if heading there in June for the Tsutsuji Festival.
