Mitsui Garden Hotel Kumamoto
Kumamoto,Kumamoto - View on map
"Mitsui Garden Hotel Kumamoto Our room was on the 8th floor. Buffet Breakfast was included and was very good with lots of choices. Very small room with double bed. Had sheet and doona, and the mattress was comfortable. Had a room safe and multi recharge ports. There was no room for luggage or moving about the room. Had one chair. Had hanging space but no cupboard. Small bathroom with deep bath and shower in the bath. No free water bottles. It had a fridge, coffee and tea making facilities. Has a window that looks out to other distant hotel rooms and you can see the road in a gap between buildings. We found the hotel easily by using a tram from the station. The hotel is a 25 min walk along the river from the station if you wish to walk. There is shopping and restaurants nearby but at the station there is a great food court with many restaurants to try. The castle is under repair so we used Kumamoto as a base to visit Nagasaki and Aso volcano. The ramen restaurant in Aso was the best we"

Dormy Inn Kumamoto Natural Hot Spring
Kumamoto,Kumamoto - View on map
"This was one of the best hotels I've booked through Agoda! An excellent location in the city center meant we could easily walk to the main attractions, numerous shopping arcades & department stores. I used to live in this city (before this hotel was built) & believe Dormy Inn is an excellent choice for location. The rooms are small on western standards, but quite usual for Japan & extremely clean. There was a private shower & electronic toilet with bidet in the room, but the main attraction is the hot mineral spring baths (indoor & outdoor) on the roof top - a great place to soak & relax after a busy day of sightseeing & shopping. We really looked forward to long soak every evening. The breakfast buffet is absolutely fantastic! You can try traditional Japanese foods & Kumamoto local specialities, as well as the usual western breakfast items. We ate breakfast here 3 days - they had a standard 20 items, & about another 10-15 items which changed each day. Many people have already mentioned the free ramen (noodles in soup) between 9:30~11pm. Another treat to enjoy in the evening. I really recommend this hotel as the best place to stay in Kumamoto!"

Nest Hotel Kumamoto
Kumamoto,Kumamoto - View on map
"This hotel a great value, and centrally located in downtown Kumamoto. If you are a JR traveler it is about a half hour walk from JR Kumamoto station. Trams are easy and cheap (170 Yen), but sometimes crowded. The beds are comfortable, the rooms are clean and relatively spacious, the extra charge breakfast buffet is very good. Staff is professional and courteous, but very little English spoken."

Riverside Hotel Kumamoto

"Location is good, 3-5 min walk to the walking street with bars and shops also bus station. 15-20 Min walk to kumamoto castle, but it was closed for reconstruction now. From kumamoto jr station about 30min walk or take bus about 10mins. Seems some rooms are not re-decorated, and if you stay in those rooms , not worth the money. "

Kumamoto Hotel Castle
Kumamoto,Kumamoto - View on map
"Kumamoto is an interesting city in Kyushu. It is an old city, with excellent historical, cultural and educational facilities. The location of the hotel was directly across from the famous Kumamoto Castle, very close to the two light train tracks that criss cross the city. The staff were pleasant and well mannered, as would be expected in Japan, and also very helpful and informative. The room with a double bed was small, but very clean. Internet connection was free, but not especially efficient or fast. The staff at the check-in counter were well spoken in English. I would recommend the hotel most strongly, and would definitely be happy to stay there again on my next visit to Kumamoto. "

The New Hotel Kumamoto
Kumamoto,Kumamoto - View on map
"Located next door to the Kumamoto train station with immediate access to buses & the tram system as well. The station itself is great: restaurants, shops, convenience stores, information desk, etc. Room size was refreshingly larger than others I had stayed in within Japan & is more akin to standard hotel rooms. Eco-cleaning option is available (elect not to have your linens changed every day, which I was happy to select). Despite the construction going on at the station, I didn’t hear noises when I was in my room. If you’re up for a 20 minute hike, I recommend checking out Hanaokayama. You can see the peace pagoda from the hotel. I will definitely stay here again if I’m ever in Kumamoto again. It’s a good place to base yourself if you want to explore Kyushu "

Traveler impressions of Kumamoto

More about Kumamoto

On the Japanese island of Kyushu is the Kumamoto prefecture and its capital city of Kumumato. The large castles found here are one of a few things that the city is known for. Shuttle buses make an hour’s long journey to reach the city after disembarking from Kumumato Airport, and train services also provide a means of arriving. Traversing the city is made convenient with a two-line tram system and extensive bus system. Getting around by bike is also a convenient and rewarding option.

Several sites make Kumumato a noteworthy destination. One of its most notable is the rebuilt Kumamoto Castle. It was brought back to life in the 1960s after being burned down in 1877. Although it has lost some of its authenticity, the castle has been considered a must-see attraction and the heart of the city. Another must-see is the Suizenji Gardens that provide a feel of the country right in the middle of the city. There are excellent places to visit for those wanting to take in the views of the city. These include Mt. Kinpo and Hanaokayama. Honmyo-ji Temple is one of the city’s most favorite temples, built in honor of the man who built Kumumato Castle. A long staircase lined with candles leads to the temple and then to the hill’s summit where one can get views of the castle towering over the city.
