Traveler impressions of Lopburi

This historic city is located in the Chao Phraya basin just a few hours from Bangkok. A mountainous and quiet town with clean fresh air and plenty of heritage, it’s often a favorite weekend destination for city dwellers looking to escape the noise of the city. There are minibuses that depart from Bangkok a few times each day, and it’s also possible to either drive or take a taxi directly to a hotel in Lopburi.

Lopburi is affectionately known as Monkey Town, and a walk through the town or a visit to one of the many temples will quickly reveal why it earned this name. One of the most famous attractions is most certainly Pra Prang Sam Yot Temple, a stunning Khmer-style temple that’s nearly overrun with monkeys and of course, tourists. The extremely photogenic temple is best at sunrise or sunset, when the light of the sun hits the bricks and gives off a golden hue.

Another unique temple is Wat Sao Thong Thong, which was once a Christian church but was converted many years ago. The contrast of these two faiths and the differences in the styles of architecture are left to coexist, creating a beautiful atmosphere.

The history of Lopburi dates back to ancient times, and being the former seat of the kingdom from many centuries ago means that places like King Narai’s Palace contain a great deal of historical artifacts and exhibits, perfect for the history buffs and shutter bugs.

There’s a lot more to see and do in Lopburi, and the best way to discover what else this city has to offer in terms of attractions, landmarks, and hotels is by exploring the interactive map on this page.
