Traveler impressions of Pontianak

More about Pontianak

Pontianak is the capital city of the West Kalimantan province of Indonesia. The city, which enjoys a rich history dating back to long before colonial times, is a wonderful melting pot of many cultures and ethnic groups living side by side in harmony.

The city is served by Supadio International Airport, which connect the city to several of the major surrounding cities.

Pontianak is one of those cities that is best seen from the vantage point of a local, by going to the common shops and restaurants and getting to know some of the people. It is in this way that one may get to witness people of very different cultural and ethnic backgrounds coming together to form the whole of this unique and interesting city. One of the more popular destinations for new visitors to this city is the Equator Monument, which is built on exactly the middle of the equator line and features souvenir shops and English speaking guides for visitors.

The Kapuas River is a major part of this city, effectively dividing the city into two sides and serving as a popular and unique attraction for visitors who enjoy evening boat rides along the river to take in the views of the city from the waterfront. There is a part right at the waterfront that is popular among locals and tourists alike. Pontianak is certainly an interesting place with plenty of interesting things to see and do.
